These Buckeye candies are not hard to make at all and can be used for festive Christmas gifts! Buckeyes are peanut butter balls that are dipped in chocolate a bite sized treat that is absolutely delicious, the chocolate and peanut butter melt in your mouth, such a great delectable for the holidays! This is the best and most simple recipe you'll find! Do it with the kids, they'll love helping making these yummy deserts!
Ingredients! + Materials!
- 1 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 stick softened butter
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 3 cups powdered sugar (about 1/2 lb.)
- 4 cups good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tsps. vegetable shortening
- wax paper
- double boiler
- tooth picks!
Make the Peanut Butter Balls
- In a large bowl (or the bowl or an electric mixer), combine the peanut butter, butter, and vanilla. Gradually add the powdered sugar to the mix until it is well mixed. (The dough will look dry.)
- Roll the mixture into 3/4" balls, using your hands, and place on a plate lined with waxed paper. Stick a toothpick in each of the balls (to be used as a handle for dipping in the chocolate). Chill in the freezer for about 30 minutes.
Melt the Chocolate
3. When the peanut butter balls have set, gently melt the chocolate and shortening in the top of a double boiler, stirring frequently, under smooth.
Form the Buckeyes
4. Dip the frozen peanut butter balls in the chocolate, holding them by the toothpick. Leave a small portion on the peanut butter showing at top so the candy resembles the fruit of the "buckeye" tree.
5.Return the buckeyes to the plate. Gently remove the toothpick and smooth over the hole. Refrigerate at least two hours before serving.
6. Store buckeyes in a tightly sealed tin or (preferably) in the refrigerator. Buckeyes also freeze well

My family favorite , getting ready to start making for Holidays,,I use small pretzels and put peanut butter ball on top and slightly press and after chill I then use pretzel to dip into melted chocolate don’t have buckeye look but so easy and nice finish on top, also have salty factor ,good with chocolate,

I make a totally different one.
2 cups Rice Krispies
1 box confectionary sugar
1 med size extra crunchy peanut butter
1 stick butter room temperature
Mix well with hands until sugar is all incorporated and mixture is color of PB. Roll them into balls. You can refrigerate and dip in chocolate with paraffin wax. DELICIOUS!!!

Quality dipping chocolate/chocolate discs is the absolute best!

I make these but use paraffin wax instead of the oil...plenty of left over chocolate so I refrigerate it and use it to make homemade chocolate donuts from canned biscuits. They're great

I've been making these for over 35 years! I use 4 cups or confectioners sugar and I ALWAYS double the recipe....one batch is just not enough in my house! I use a large paper clip partially opened....like an L shape....to dip them with. It makes only a small hole and very easy to dip with. I also use about 1/3 stick of paraffin instead of vegetable shortening. It helps the chocolate to harden and puts a nice shine on them. They are the most popular goodie I make at Christmas and have been requested for birthday gifts for years!

Use 2 cups of peanut butter and 2 cups of graham cracker crumbs, 2 lbs of confectioners sugar and 2 sticks of butter. Gives them more body and much less overwhelming peanut butter taste. Used to sell 150 dozen every Christmas. They're the best!

4 cups of chocolate ended up being more than we needed for 5 dozen buckeyes. We had roughly 2 cups leftover and mixed in crushed honey grahams and marshmallow to make s'mores bark. DELICIOUS and creative way to use leftover ingredients!
