How to Make Unhealthy Banana Smoothies

Jeannie has been writing online for over 10 years. She covers a wide variety of topics—hobbies, opinions, dating advice, and more!

Healthy Smoothies? Nope!

I just got my first blender for Christmas and I was quite excited to join the world of smoothie makers. After all, everybody is making smoothies and I did not want to be left out. I eagerly searched all over the internet looking for recipe ideas and I checked some smoothie recipe cookbooks out at the library. I was on my way to making smoothies in no time!

Within a short period of time, I realized there were many banana smoothie recipes. In the world of smoothies, apparently the banana is king. I think the smoothie police arrest you if you don't include bananas in a fruit smoothie recipe. However, I begin to realize there was a serious shortage of one type of smoothie recipe: unhealthy smoothies!

I appreciate the fact that many people want to drink a healthy beverage. Some people want to lose weight, and others want to get in shape. Well poo on that! I am sure there are plenty of people out there that would like a really unhealthy smoothie to drink and I want to help those folks out. After all, the banana is going to add a healthy touch to any smoothie. Why not counteract that with something totally delicious and bad for you?

Don't Run Away... I Will Give You Options

OK, so some of you might be saying, "But Jeannie, I really do want a smoothie with some nutritional value to it." OK, party poopers, I can help you out, too. With each recipe, you can make it healthier. Remember, you are the smoothie master in all of this. You can opt to change these recipes to make them healthier.

For instance, you can use skim milk instead of whole milk in any smoothie recipe. You can opt to use sugar-free syrup in any recipe that calls for it. Most of all, you can add a little yogurt, plain or vanilla flavored, to each smoothie to add a probiotic element to it. A tablespoon or two will do. I do recommend using plain Greek yogurtand adding a couple of Equal packets to it. That makes it just sweet enough, but doesn't take away from the probiotic health benefits. Ummm... but not that I would do that or anything. That sounds way too healthy!

Please keep in mind each recipe is going to be very simple because A) I don't have the time to hunt down weird ingredients, and B) I am not that creative with recipes. For each smoothie, I am going to list the ingredients you will need. All you have to do is throw them in the blender and press the button. Simple? I hope so. If I can manage it, anyone should be able to do it. So let's get down to business now.

Hamilton Beach Blender

Chocolate Banana Smoothie

1 cup of milk

1 cup of crushed ice

2 or 3 squirts of chocolate syrup

1 banana

This recipe works especially well if the banana is really ripe. I've found this is great if the banana is really too ripe to eat on its own. You can also opt to add a packet of Equal or a touch of sugar if this isn't sweet enough. That is especially the case if you choose to add yogurt to it.

Now, I know what you are thinking... why not just add some chocolate ice cream? Well, that would make it a milkshake, and this hub is all about smoothies, folks! You can take that milkshake talk somewhere else!

Caramel Banana Smoothie

1 cup of milk

1 cup of crushed ice

2 or 3 squirts of caramel syrup

1 banana

OK, OK, I know this is the same recipe as the Chocolate Banana Smoothie, except there is caramel used instead of chocolate.

I never claimed to be Betty Crocker! Making up recipes has never really been my thing. I am trying my best here.

Peanut Butter, Chocolate, and Banana Smoothie

1 cup of milk

1 cup of crushed ice

2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter

4 squirts of chocolate syrup

1 packet of Equal or spoon of sugar

1 banana

This is sort of like a Reese's Peanut Butter cup and banana smoothie. Due to my overwhelming desire to avoid being sued by Reese's, I decided to call this recipe something else.

You have plenty of options with this particular recipe. You can add more peanut butter if you like. Since I did not want to jam my blender with globs of peanut butter, I decided 2 tablespoons was enough. If you are a peanut butter lover, you can take your chances. I would also recommend adding more sugar or sweetener if you add more peanut butter, but that would just be my preference. I honestly don't think more chocolate would hurt either.

Vanilla Caramel Coffee Banana Smoothie

1 cup of milk

1 cup of crushed ice

4 heaping spoons of Vanilla Caramel Maxwell House International Latte

1 squirt of caramel syrup

1 Equal packet or spoon of sugar

1 banana

Oh yes, this is the most mighty and unhealthy smoothie recipe yet! You can do this smoothie without the caramel syrup, but I found through trial and error, the syrup makes it tastier. That is why I am completely hyper with a ton of caffeine coursing through my system. Yes, I worked hard making this smoothie delicious so you don't have to think about it at all!

Final Smoothie Thoughts

For now, I shall leave you my friends. Mostly, I need to come off my Vanilla Caramel Coffee Banana Smoothie high right now. As I create more exciting and unhealthy smoothie recipes, I will make sure to add them. Also, please keep in mind each recipe makes about 2 servings unless you are especially thirsty or hungry. You can always drink one glass now and save one for later. Travel mugs are perfect for saving the smoothie for later. Just pour it in and pop it in the fridge. I've found some smoothies taste even better after sitting in the fridge for a day. Have a happy smoothie day!

P.S. These straws are great. Buy some milkshake straws; regular straws are too thin for smoothies.

Hahaha... yes, it is so much like a milkshake you won't even know the difference. :-)

StrictlyQuotes from Australia on February 22, 2013:

Now they're my kind of smoothies :)

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on February 06, 2013:

It is quite delicious! I have been trying to tone down the "unhealthiness" in my smoothies lately, but that is one of my favorites. Thanks so much!

Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on February 05, 2013:

The peanut butter, chocolate, and banana smoothie looks like something that I would like. It sounds like a banana split in a blender...just add a cherry and some whipped cream.

thanks for sharing this with us.

Sending Angels to you and yours this evening. :) ps

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on January 08, 2013:

Ruchira - I suppose as long as there is a banana, there must be some health benefit to them. :-)

jonmcclusk - Make sure to get a red blender. They are the best! :-)

Thank you both for your comments!

Jonathan McCloskey from Cinnaminson, New Jersey on January 07, 2013:

I think I'll go buy a blender right now just after reading this great hub. The first thing I make will be a banana smoothie I believe, haha.

Ruchira from United States on January 07, 2013:

Smoothies always are my favorite and I don't categorize it as unhealthy.

Voted up as useful.

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on January 07, 2013:

These recipes sound good. I just need a new blender.

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on January 07, 2013:

drbj - Yes, as it turns out, the world was lacking unhealthy smoothies. I am thinking about creating a cookies and cream smoothie, too. Thanks for your comment!

shiningirisheyes - I am happy you enjoyed my hub so much. Everyone is doing healthy, so why not go in the opposite direction? I hope you enjoy the unhealthy smoothies and thanks!

carter06 - I am supposed to be on a diet right now, but I did have to take some "time off" to experiment with these smoothies. :-) I think the coffee smoothie is my favorite. Thanks for the votes and the comment!

carol7777 - These are honestly more like milkshakes, so if you like those, you will like these smoothies. :-) Thanks for the comment!

FullofLoveSites - You are so right. These are kind of like anti-smoothies. Oh, chocolate shavings sound like a great idea! I thought of adding whipped cream, too. Maybe we are on to something. Thanks for the votes and the comment!

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on January 07, 2013:

kikalina - Yes, unhealthy always tastes better!

Janine Huldie - Thanks so much for pinning and for sharing! Smoothies are pretty great. I find that I don't like drinking yogurt too much though, so I tend to go easy on that. Funny how some things don't taste as good as a drink.

TToombs08 - Ohhh... Hazelnut Mocha... I think that would be a great smoothie. I am happy I could help you rethink you ways. And yes, I will try to stay humble even though I have an awesome red blender now. :-) Thanks for your comment!

teaches12345 - I find smoothies are every so much tastier when they are unhealthy. I have been trying to add kale to smoothies... errrrrr.... I will keep trying. So far, it is not working out. Thanks for voting up and pinning!

Pamela Kinnaird W - Wow, that sounds super healthy. I'll bet it is tasty... ummm... I need to start drinking more smoothies like that. Thanks for the votes!

FullOfLoveSites from United States on January 07, 2013:

Smoothies are reputed to be healthy but I like the way you call the banana smoothie "unhealthy". I would call that the "anti-smoothie", hehehe.

Yeah, even just once in our lives -- especially for those who are on a diet -- just indulge? Give yourself even for only a weekend to those unhealthy but oh-so-yummy treats. I would even add chocolate shavings on mine, hehehehe.

Voted up and awesome. :)

carol stanley from Arizona on January 07, 2013:

I am not a huge smoothie fan but these certainly look tempting. Thanks for sharing something not quite as healthy.

I love it! I absolutely love how you took the delicious road with this instead of the ultra healthy route. I will be mixing the decadent "unhealthy" version.

drbj and sherry from south Florida on January 06, 2013:

After reading this erudite information, Jeannie, I realize that unhealthy smoothies are exactly what I have been searching for. So thank you for these recipes which I shall personally sample. Promise.

Pamela Dapples from Arizona. on January 06, 2013:

Enjoyed! I have a shake almost every morning with Greek Yogurt strained through a cloth, flaxseed oil, banana, berries, raw honey, organic lemon juice and yaddah, yaddah, yaddah -- but yours sound almost as delicious. Voting up and funny.

Dianna Mendez on January 06, 2013:

Love smoothies when they are healthy -- ok, even when not! Great recipes. I think bananas and chocolate make any smoothie a wonderful experience. Voted up and pinned!

I avoid healthy smoothies at all cost but your Vanilla Caramel Coffee Banana Smoothie made me rethink my ways. And I just happen to have a box of International Coffees Hazelnut Mocha that I think would lend itself nicely to a banana smoothie. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways, oh wise Smoothie Guru! :) And congrats on getting your first blender. I hope this doesn't mean yer gonna get all uppity on us now. :D

Janine Huldie from New York, New York on January 06, 2013:

Very creative recipes Jeannie! It seems like you are really enjoying your new blender. I like berry smoothies. The more berrier the better :)

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on January 06, 2013:

billybuc - Somehow knowing it is unhealthy does make it tastes better. The problem is I was supposed to be making healthy smoothies for 2013. Whoops! :-) Thanks for the comment.
