How to Make Southern Sweet Tea (there is a secret ingredient)

There is nothing as refreshing during the warm weather as iced tea, this recipe is a great southern iced tea recipe that tastes amazing. There is a secret ingredient that will change the way you make and drink iced to forever !


12 tea bags (regular/smaller sized) or 6 family sized

4 cups (1 quart) of boiling water

12 cups (3 quarts) of cold water

1 1/2 - 2 cups of sugar (I like 1 1/2, but if you like real sweet tea than use 2 cups)

1/4 teaspoon of baking soda (secret ingredient)

Boil your 4 cups of water. In a gallon container add your baking soda and tea bags, pour boiling water over top. Stir gently, and let sit for 10-15 minutes covered with a towel.

Remove the tea bags, squeezing gently and add your sugar stirring until dissolved. Add your cold/cool water and put in the fridge.

Serve over 1/2 cup filled with ice.

How to Make Sun Tea

Another way to make great iced tea is called sun tea. All you do is get a gallon sized jar. Make sure it's cleaned out well.

Fill it 3/4 of the way with water.

Now add your tea bags. If you are using large family sized tea bags, use 5-6. If you're using the smaller sized tea bags, use 10.

Now just put it in the sun for an afternoon, by evening it will be ready to make your tea how ever you prefer.

I find it interesting that your recipe calls for baking soda. I am from the south, Summerville, South Carolina to be exact, and I have never heard of it. The rest of the recipe is correct, but leave out the baking soda.
