What is King's Hawaiian Sweet Bread?


The famous Hawaiian bread that we know and love to eat actually originated as Portuguese bread. It is a sweet bread made with milk, sugar, or honey that produces a sweet and light texture. You can find this bread in supermarkets and Costco, usually in the form of dinner rolls.

Portuguese immigrants came to Hawaii in the 19th century and introduced pork, chili peppers, and their authentic Portuguese sweet bread.

Robert Taira, a Japanese-American baker came up with a different version of this traditional bread and introduced it to the rest of the states. It is now widely known as King's Hawaiian Sweet Bread, and has been a hit ever since!

2 Delicious Recipes of Hawaiian Bread


When it comes to baking, I always experiment with healthier versions of classic recipes. In this article you will find two fabulous Hawaiian bread recipes. The first one is a healthy version, using whole wheat flour instead of white flour. It is absolutely moist and nutty, with the prefect amount of sweetness from the pineapple juice.

You'd be surprised to learn how quick and easy it is to make this whole wheat Hawaiian bread. There is no kneading involved! Just mix the ingredients and pop it in the oven!

When I have guests over for a party, I usually use the second recipe. If only everyone has the same preference when it comes to food! But they don't! And if your guests are not used to eating whole wheat foods, you can use the second recipe. Although I've had friends and family who loved the first recipes too!

The second recipe is almost the same as the original secret recipe of King's Hawaiian Bread. You don't think they're going to give away the secret recipe, do you? Sweet, soft, and just seriously addicting. You better triple the batch because they won't last long!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 (12 oz) can crushed pineapple with juice
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt


Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients. Since I had fresh pineapples, I decided to chop the pineapple to fine pieces (8 oz or 1 cup) and added to 1 can of (6 oz) pineapple juice. If you don't have fresh fruits, just use 1 (12oz) can of crushed pineapples including the juice)
  4. Pour batter in bread pan. Sprinkle the top with extra coconut flakes and some more walnuts.
  5. Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean after you insert it.

The Original Hawaiian Bread Recipe


  • 6 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 (.25 ounce) envelopes active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoo vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)


Directions


  1. "Proof" your yeast by combining 1/2 cup of warm water (about 110 degrees F) sugar, and yeast together. Let stand until foamy, about 10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together the yeast mixture, eggs, pineapple juice, 1/2 cup water, sugar, ginger, vanilla, and melted butter. Gradually stir in flour. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it's doubled the size. I like to put it in my oven.
  3. Use your hands and gently deflate the dough. Put it and turn it on a well floured surface. Divide the dough into three equal pieces and form into round loaves. Place the loaves into three lightly greased round cake pans.
  4. Let the dough rise again (covered with damp cloth) for about 40 minutes, or until doubled in volume.
  5. Bake @ 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes, or until bottom of a loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

to kangamama - when proofing the yeast- you mix the yeast - 2 pkg with the 1/2 c warm water, add a tsp of sugar & stir it and sit it aside for 10 min. When it bubbles & rises that means the yeast is really active. I will try both of this recipes and I let you know the results. thanks for sharing.

How much sugar do you use with the yeast and then how much do you add the second time when i did 3/4 c sugar 2 pkgs yeast and1/2 cup water it was a pasty mixture is this right
