Milk and dairy are in many products that we eat and consume daily. Milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt are a few of the obvious. These foods taste good and we enjoy them.

For the most part, humans are the only species that specifically seeks out and drinks milk from another animal. Why is this? Yes, we require vitamin D, and calcium. But dairy is not the only source we can obtain these vital nutrients from.

What kind of symptoms can dairy build up cause?

  • Sinus irritation, constantly feeling like you have a cold or a runny nose
  • Acne
  • Iron-deficiency anemia
  • Skin Rashes
  • Headaches
  • Excess mucus
  • Excess gurgling and grumbling in the belly
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Loose foamy stools
  • Diarrhea

Important considerations

Before starting any detox program, it's advisable to discuss things with your primary care provider. Some symptoms of dairy and lactose intolerance mimic other health issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome, IBS-which is inflammatory bowel disease, digestive problems from foods that contain sorbitol or fructose, and overuse of laxatives.

If you have unbearable symptoms, discuss this with your doctor before making drastic changes to your diet or incorporating a detox program.

Why detox from Dairy?

Lactose intolerance is basically the inability of the body to digest milk properly. A huge amount of the population suffers from lactose intolerance. Some people know this, others do not. Consuming dairy products has shown to slow down liver function and build up mucus within the body. Simply put, it creates extra work for your body and organs to process and digest food the way it is designed to do. Not only are dairy containing products hard for the body to digest, but most often they are full of hormones and pesticides. TOXINS. Cows milk is the number one cause of allergic causes and reactions in the United States. So aside from embarrassing bathroom problems that dairy intolerance can cause, it robs the body of functioning at its greatest capacity and makes people chronically sick.

Perhaps a full dairy detox is not for you, but if you don't believe it's beneficial, I urge you to just try even a 24-48 hour hiatus from all dairy and dairy containing products.

The reason we want to detox from dairy products is to eliminate these unwanted, uncomfortable symptoms, to get rid of toxic waste within the body, to feel healthier, and to promote optimal health and organ function.

How to detox from dairy products

How can you detox from dairy products? It's not difficult. Really all you have to do is eliminate them from your diet!

Step 1

First and foremost, you need to eliminate dairy products from your diet for a minimum of 30 days. A 30-day detox will give your body ample time to eliminate toxins and show signs of benefit. This 30-day detox includes eliminating cheese, yogurt, milk, and anything else you've consumed that contains dairy from cows or other animals, such as goats. You should even consider looking for hidden dairy products in all items consumed, such as cheese in packages of crackers.

Step 2

If you find you just cannot live without certain dairy products, due to flavor or what you are accustomed to consuming, try switching to soy milk, coconut milk, rice milk, or even almond milk. It's OK to eat yogurt and other foods made with these substitutes.

Step 3

Eat only foods that are "clean" for the duration of your detox. This would include raw fruits and vegetables, brown rice, and whole grains. Lean poultry and fish are OK, but avoid red meat and pork when possible. The reason you should avoid these meats is that they have similar effects on the gastrointestinal tract and digestion as dairy products do.

Step 4

As with any detox, drink plenty of high-quality water. You should consume at least 64oz per day to flush dairy from your system and keep things "moving".

Step 5

Moderately exercise for at least 20 minutes a day, doesn't sound like much does it? This can include a quick cardio workout or other exercise videos, a brisk walk, riding a bike, or joining a gym. Even cleaning vigorously! Exercise encourages your intestines to work and will help move and expel waste through and out of the body.

Step 6

If after the detox you decide to introduce dairy back into your body, do so slowly and minimally. Don't be surprised if you find that the hideous and horrible symptoms of dairy overload reappear with resumed consumption. Typically the first symptoms to appear are stomach upset and headaches. If you find reintroduction causes all the nasty symptoms of dairy consumption to reappear, repeat steps 1-5!

Nature knows

Follow natures lead. We were not designed to drink milk from another species. We are the only species that consumes milk from an animal long after we quit requiring breastmilk even from our own mothers. Animals are mistreated and abused for a product that makes us sick. Dairy has been shown to stimulate cancer growth in humans. It is by far the WORST substance you could feed to your newborn. Newborn babies require custom-made breast milk the same as a baby calf and water once weened. These are even more reasons to detox and get dairy out of your life.


Live healthy and live longer. You may find discomfort from dairy detox initially. But over time, you will adjust and find a renewed sense of energy, health and vitality.

If you ever have to wonder about why we are allergic, just look at nature. Other species do not feed their own on another species milk. Aside from the animal cruelty of it, it's just not natural. There is a reason we ween off our mothers milk. If we were to drink milk you'd think we'd drink it from an ape or something closer to our own DNA match, we don't, guess that would be taboo?! Oh the irony. Can't add in the GMO issues, or I'll be writing another hub. I'm glad people are reducing or eliminating dairy from their diets, not only for health reasons, but for animals also. :) Thanks Farrah for your comments. I hope you feel 1000% better off foods that are causing you sensitivities.

at first i thought i had lactose intolerant. so i stopped milk for 2 weeks and started eating eggs..and nothing happened. after doing the intolerance test i found out i am lactose and eggs and wheat... intolerant! so i advice all to make sure what he/she is intolerant to. till now i have stopped eating food i am intolerant to for 10 days. nothing happened yet with the bloating but it needs times and i dont feel bloated anymore

I wonder - why are so many people lactose intolerant? Curious. This detoxification procedure is very helpful, nonetheless. I combine it with a general eating healthy program.

Interesting hub. I do notice quite a difference when I don't eat dairy. I tend to bloat with dairy, and I also notice that my energy levels and my skin clearness go up when I don't eat dairy. voted up!

I don't consume dairy products. Not only are lactose difficult to digest for some people, but others people have casein sensitivity. Some individuals are put on a gluten-free casein free (GFCF) diet by their practitioners due to their particular sensitivity to these foods.
