The basic recipe to cooking a simple Indian dal

  1. Choose a lentil and soak it in hot water.
  2. When soaked, lentils increase in size. So 1/2 cup of dal is enough to make one cup of cooked dal. When cooked, this can serve up to 4 people.
  3. Cook the dal until mushy. You can do this in an electric cooker, pressure cooker or on a wide bottomed pan in stove top.
  4. To cook the dal, you will need to add 1 1/2 cup of water for every 1/2 cup of dal. If needed, increase the quantity of water until the dal is well cooked.
  5. Keep the cooked dal aside.

  1. Heat oil in a pan
  2. Add jeera, chopped onion and green chilli. You will need 1/2 medium chopped onion if using 1 cup of cooked dal. Stir until onion turn translucent.
  3. Optionally, add 2 medium tomatoes and stir until tomatoes turn mushy.
  4. Optionally, add some veggies and cook them.
  5. Then add dal, water, turmeric and salt to taste. You can add water based on your desired dal consistency. Add 1 tsp turmeric for 1 cup cooked dal. Taste and adjust salt and turmeric.

That is how you cook any dal, the simple Indian way.

Voila!! Make it at home and enjoy the healthy goodness.
