When can I start giving fish to my baby? How to give fish to my child?

I started giving fish to my child when he became 7 months old. You can start giving fish to your child when your child is 6 months old. And now fish is his favourite food. I would like to share with you the recipe I used to cook fish for my infant. I have seen several fish recipes in internet. But there are not many Indian methods of cooking fish for babies. My method of cooking fish for baby is more or less like the normal South Indian fish recipe. This recipe would not cause any indigestion problem in infants or children as I am including other ingredients that would help digestion. Mixing fish with inappropriate ingredients like curd would cause stomach upset.

Why you should give fish to your child: Fish, the healthiest food for your baby

Fish is a wonderful food for babies. Fish supply omega-3 fatty acids that would boost up the development of child’s brain and eye. Fish is a rich source of vitamin D, protein and several other nutrients. I have felt that fish promotes the physical and intellectual growth of my baby.

What type of fish can be given to babies? Fishes that should not be given to children

If you search the above heading in internet you would find that fish with high mercury content should not be given to children. You can follow the expert advice. The fishes with high mercury content include

  • White snapper (white perch, tilefish) (It is called Karkara in tamil and Malayalam)
  • King mackerel (Kera in tamil and Malayalam, this is different from mackerel or ayila)
  • Shark (Sora in tamil, Sharavu in Malayalam)
  • Tuna (Choora in malayalam, sura in tamil)
  • Red snapper (chemballi in Malayalam)
  • Bobster
  • Swordfish

But the above fishes can be given in mild amounts. No need to avoid them fully. Tuna fish is very nutritious. It can be given one or two times a week.

Healthy fish for babies: Fishes that can be given to babies include

  • Sardine (Mathi in Malayalam and tamil)
  • Mackerel (Ayila in malayalam, kanamkathi in tamil)
  • Pomfret (Avoli in Malayalam, vavval in tamil)
  • Seer fish (Ney meen in Malayalam, vanchiram in tamil)
  • Stingray (therandi in Malayalam)
  • Barracuda (Sheelavu in malayalam)

While giving fish to babies, separate cooked fish flesh carefully and give. Ensure that born is fully removed. Give fish along with little rice. Children would like it. My son likes Sardine. It is very nutritious for babies. I do carefully take out sardine flesh and give to baby.

Fish (whatever fish sardine, mackerel or whatever) – 2 pieces

Ginger – 1 small piece

Garlic – 2 cloves

Tomato – ¼ a tomato

Onion – ¼ an onion (sliced) (shallots is also ok)

Coriander leaves - 4 or 5 leaves

Curry leaves – 2

Turmeric powder – 1 pinch

Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon

Oil – 2 teaspoon

Mustard seeds – 1 pinch

Salt – as required

How to make fish curry for kids? Healthy fish recipe for children

Pour oil into a pan and splutter mustard seeds. Now fry tomato, onion, garlic, ginger, and curry leaves. Add salt. Now our 50 ml of water to it and boil. Now put fish pieces and add turmeric powder. Cook till fish gets cooked. Put coriander leaves also Water will dry up when kept in low flame. Lastly our 1 teaspoon lemon juice to it. Fish is ready for your kid. Give with rice or chappathi. Kids would love this fish recipe. If you further enhance the taste of the fish curry add 1 tablespoon of coconut milk before removing from fire. Do not boil coconut milk.

hey Dhannyya, please can you give me the refernces you used for mercury levels in Sear fish. That is my favourite fish, but I've been told it has high Mercury.

This is a very important topic for a hub! I gave my first born lots of fish when he was a baby and he loves it today. With our second two we ate less fish and they have a harder time now enjoying it. Start from the beginning. Voted up!
