Grilled Cheese With Tomato Soup Is Real Popular In The USA
Grilled Cheese Sandwich History, Trivia And More
It was during the depression era that grilled cheese sandwiches made their appearance for the first time on the tables of Americans. It wasn't long before some one came up with the ideal of serving tomato soup with the sandwiches and the rest is history.
It wasn't long before grilled cheese sandwiches became food for entertaining and it was during the late 1930s that Sunday night became a popular night for entertaining guests. And now grilled cheese is making a big come back and you'll find grilled cheese sandwiches being made all kinds of new and exciting ways.
If you're here looking for who invented the grilled cheese sandwich we can tell you that no one really knows. What we do know is that the ingredients for making grilled cheese sandwiches became available in the 1920s and it wasn't long before someone put sliced American cheese between slices of white bread and toasted the sandwich. My Grandmother Hattie Propst said her family started making the sandwiches in the 1930s and it wasn't long she said before someone came up with the ideal of serving homemade cream of tomato soup with the sandwiches. I know my Grandmother made some of the most delicious cream of tomato soup that you would ever taste. Here's the recipe.
Grandma's Cream Of Tomato Soup Recipe
1. Three Cups Of Fresh Peeled And Chopped Tomatoes.
2. One Half Teaspoon Baking Soda.
3. Four Tablespoons Butter. ( Real Butter Not Margarine )
4. Four Tablespoons All Purpose Plain Flour.
5. One Tablespoon Sugar.
6. One Teaspoon Ground Sea Salt.
7. Four Cups Whole Milk.
8. One Half Cup Fine Diced White Onion.
9. One Pinch Of Nutmeg.
Now you want to melt your butter over low heat and then add your onions to the pan and stir with a wooden spoon while the onion cooks. You want the onion to cook until it is soft and done but not browned.
Sprinkle your flour into the pan over the cooked butter and onion and stir to mix it in well for two to three minutes.
Slowly stir in the milk while the pan is on low heat. Mix the baking soda in with your tomatoes and then add your tomatoes into the milk. Now you can add in the remaining ingredients. The pinch of nutmeg is just that a small pinch between two fingers.
Bring the heat up to medium for a couple of minutes. Now turn the heat off and allow the soup to cool. When the soup is cool enough you want to pour your soup into a blender and blend it on high until the soup is pureed. Once you have all the soup pureed you can return it to the pot. When you have your grilled cheese sandwiches ready just heat up the soup and sprinkle the top of the heated soup with a little fresh chopped parsley. In case you're wondering the addition of the baking soda prevents your milk from curdling.
Yes its that easy and now you have one of the best cream of tomato soups that you'll ever taste in your life.

We love grilled cheese - but not goat cheese ;) We love putting different veggies on ours, generally it is a slice of onion and tomato, sometimes bell peppers. We also put a slice of ham in with the cheese. We use 'real' cheese, not processed. Mmmm, everyone's ideas sound fantastic!
