Green peppers are also called bell peppers in the United States. Green peppers are so popular that they have their own national day. They are celebrated and honored on August 5.

According to Wikipedia, green peppers are not vegetables as most people think. People think they are vegetables because they are sold as produce in the grocery stores and at vegetable stands.

Bell peppers are fruit from the capsicum plant. As far as botanists are concerned, they are fruits. As far as cooks are concerned, they are vegetables. Green peppers are used to enhance foods with many health benefits.

Available All Year

Bell peppers are available all year long. They tend to be less expensive in grocery stores from July through November.

Most people know that all bell peppers start out green. They change to yellow, orange and red when they stay on the vine longer. Green peppers are the least expensive because they are pulled from the vine first and do not require the extra care.

When you purchase a green or another color from the basket at the supermarket, go for the heaviest ones and those with a glossy, smooth skin.


Health Benefits of Green Peppers

Green peppers are not only good in certain foods, but they are also good for you. They are very low in calories and are fat-free. The peppers are packed with vitamins and minerals. One bell pepper contains more than 100% of the daily recommended value for Vitamin C. In fact, they have more Vitamin C than an orange.

The bell pepper also has a high amount of Vitamin B6. It is made up of 94% water. According to nutritionists, green peppers are a good source of fiber, Vitamin E, and the mineral zeaxanthin, which is good for eye health.

The first pepper picked from the vine is rich in antioxidants. However, the red bell pepper which is the last to be picked has more antioxidants. Even so, the green pepper is highly nutritious.

Food Enhanced with Green Peppers

Good cooks say that every dish you use onions in, you can also use green peppers in that particular dish.

They can be used in everything including dips, salads, soups, and stews. Green peppers can also be a topping for pizza. Some people haven't tried green peppers in certain foods but they should. For instance, green peppers enhance home fried potatoes and scrambled eggs. Use green peppers in omelets.

Chop up green pepper really small and use them, along with onions, in ground beef when making the sauce for spaghetti.


Versatilty of Green Peppers

All bell peppers are versatile. That's why they have become so popular. The green pepper is bought more than the other colors because it is the least expensive. They are harvested first before they change to the other colors.

Green peppers can be eaten raw or cooked. They can be added to many other foods to enhance those dishes. Stuffed green peppers are also delicious as a main meal.
