My Favorite Items to Buy at Aldi to Save Money on Our Grocery Bill

Within the past year or so, I’ve fallen in love with shopping at Aldi. It was definitely a change of pace at first.

At Aldi, you need a quarter to use a cart. You get this quarter back at the end of your shopping trip when you return your cart. Or, you can pay it forward and pass along your cart to someone else walking in. I am known to do this as I am usually shopping with children, so it saves me from leaving them in the car or hauling them along while I walk back up to the door since they do not have cart corals in the parking lot. As someone who never carries cash, remembering to make sure I had a quarter on me was a challenge. I actually ordered a quarter holder for my keyring online. Bonus, the carts have double children’s seats in front.

Remembering to bring reusable bags was also a challenge. I now just keep a stash in my car. Aldi sells bags for around 6 cents each which isn’t bad, but just this fact makes you stop and think about the environment and whether you really need a plastic or paper bag. Often times, they do have empty boxes on hand that they will give you should you like.

When I tell people I shop at Aldi, they always have questions about these two things. Other questions I get are about if they accept credit cards and if they carry name brands. They used to only accept debit cards, but that has now changed and all forms of credit cards are accepted. Yay for those who like to accumulate credit card rewards. They do carry some name brand items here and there but the majority of their items are their own brands.

Here is a list in no particular order of some of my favorite things to buy at Aldi. Many of these items I buy each time I shop there as they have become staples in our household.

1. Salt and Pepper Grinders

I love these salt and pepper grinders! Just tear the labels off and these glass grinders look lovely in the kitchen. At this price, there is no need to refill. Simply recycle and buy more.

2. Wine

You can't go wrong with a bottle of Riesling for $4.99. Trust me, it tastes just as good as a more expensive bottle. On a regular basis, the Aldi I shop at has about 50 different wines from about $3 a bottle on up to about $20 a bottle. I have not tried one yet that I haven't liked.

3. Produce

No other stores in my area beat Aldi's produce prices. There is usually quite a variety and it is always great quality. Often times, there are specials too. I've been able to frequently pick up a bag of baby carrots for just $.49 a bag.

4. Goat Cheese

Yum! Before Aldi, I never found goat cheese for less than $4 (if I was lucky)for the same size log. This goes wonderfully with the pita chips or sweet potato chips that you'll see further down.

5. Baby Food and Snacks

I love all of Aldi's baby food products. They have fruit and vegetable pouches, crunchies in a canister, and yogurt melts. Approved by myself and my boys alike.

6. Baby Wipes

At $1.49 for a single package or $3.68 for a 3 pack, you really can't go wrong. They are nice and thick and smell pleasant too.

9. Sweet Potato Chips

I'm a huge fan of these and the vegetable chips. Way more cost effective than the name brands.

12. Grass Fed Ground Beef

A perfectly packaged pound of beef - perfect for the freezer. And grass fed organic for that price can't be beat.

13. Juice Boxes

Another kid-approved favorite, and it's organic.

14. Milk

The price on this seems to fluctuate between $1.65 and $2.25, but still not bad.

15. Eggs

Another one where the price seems to fluctuate between $.49 and a little over $1.

We regularly go to Aldi to buy milk, eggs and produce items. The meats we have tried are all good. I like the idea that they encourage recycling.
