Chocolate pie is a favorite dessert for many people throughout the world. You can make a meringue or top it with whipped topping. Making homemade chocolate pie is not difficult once you’ve made it a few times. Making pastry crust is easy since the ingredients only consist of flour, water, and salt. The reason making pastry seems difficult is the fact that the amounts in a recipe are estimated. The exact amount of water and flour varies according to the moisture in the place. The following is a basic pastry crust that is used in most chocolate pies.
How To Make Our Favorite Chocolate pie
Step 1 - Making the Homemade Pastry
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 to 4 tbsp. cold water
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1tbsp sugar
- 1/3 cup butter
- Method - Make Homemade Pie Pastry
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add butter and divide into portions that resemble the size of peas using a pastry cutter. If you don’t have a pastry cutter, then you can use 2 butter spreaders. Combine water 1 tablespoon at a moment. Mix each addition with a fork until merged. Use the extra tablespoon of water if your dough is too dry. Dry pastry dough will not roll out well.
Use 2 layers of wax paper to roll your dough roughly 12 inches in dimension. Transfer the pastry onto a 9-inch pie pan. Prick holes throughout the pastry using a fork. Bake pastry for ten to fifteen minutes or till golden. Let pastry cool before adding chocolate pie filling.
If you want to make your chocolate pie filling from scratch, then you will need to be patient because you must stir the mixture for about 15 to 20 minutes without stopping. You can also buy chocolate pudding mixes that are easy to make using a hand mixer and milk. If you choose to make your filling from scratch, then follow the next recipe.
Step 2 - Make Chocolate Pie Filling
- 1/8 tsp sea salt
- 3 cups milk
- 2 sticks butter
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 cup flour
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 4 eggs separating yolks and whites
Method - Prepare Chocolate Pie Filling
In a large saucepan, stir together flour, sugar, and cocoa. Add one cup of milk and turn the heat to medium-high heat. Keep stirring as you add the remaining milk. Beat the batter until it starts to bubble after around15 to 20 minutes. Lift pan from flame and mix in 1cup of batter with 4 egg yolks. Return egg mixture to the utensil. Stir and cook on medium-high flame until the mixture comes to another boil. Remove from flame and combine vanilla and butter. Mix vigorously until combined. Pour chocolate filling into prebaked pastry.
You can choose to top your chocolate pie with whipped topping or meringue. You can easily mix up your own meringue by mixing the remaining four egg whites with 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar. Stir the mixture at a low pace for 35 seconds with a hand blender. Change the speed higher and add sugar. Don’t add the sugar until the sugar and cream of tartar until the mixture has started to peak. Mix on high until stiff peaks form. Add meringue to the top of your chocolate pie and bake in 350 degree F. oven for 15 minutes or until golden or brown. Serve with whipped or ice cream.

Consider making other types of chocolate pies such as French silk, chocolate peanut butter, or cream pies. Making homemade chocolate pie is not difficult once you practice making it a few times.
