Deep Fried Tarantulas

This food is certainly not for the squemish and arachnophobic. Deep fried tarantulas are snacks eaten in regional Skuon in Cambodia. Skuon is also known locally as "Spiderville". Huge spiders of the tarantula species with the size of a human palm are bred in holes in the ground and later sold in the markets. The tarantulas are mixed with salt, sugar, monosodium glutamate (MSG) and garlic before they are fried in oil until the legs are crispy and crunchy. **Shivers** The deep fried tarantulas are then sold as snacks in the streets. Many tourists visit Skuon for spider tasting of these local deep fried snacks.

Watch how the tarantulas are being cooked and eaten in this video below.

rooster with huge comb

These are the funny little flaps on the roosters' heads. I wonder how many chickens do they have to catch to make a dish with cockscombs? The combs of pheasants, turkeys and chicken are commonly used in cockscomb dishes. Cockscombs have been used in French and Italian cuisine. The cockscombs can be braised with other ingredients and cooked with livers and eggs, or made into deserts.

Those who consume kefir regularly might want to try the kumis. Kefir is sour fermented cow's milk whereas kumis is fermented milk from a mare (female horse). Well, not many of us have tried the milk of a horse, which is as rare as camel's milk. A mare's milk contains more lactose than the regular cow's milk and is not suitable for those who are lactose intolerant. Horse milk is also a strong laxative. It is usually not consumed until it is fermented. The horse milk is fermented with a liquid starter culture to produce kumis. The people of Turkic and Mongol origin and some Hungarian tribes consume kumis.

Incubated Duck Egg

The balut is a fertilized duck embryo that has been incubated for at least 17 days. The unhatched chick in the egg is boiled and then eaten with salt, chilli, garlic or vinegar. The chick is almost fully formed and most parts of the chick can already be identified such as the head, body, wings and even feathers. In the Philippines, the balut is a common streetfood. The peddlars go from street to street calling out "Balut! balut!" as they ride through the neighbourhoods in their bicycles. The balut is also a common everyday food in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

If you are holidaying in Mexico, watch out when you order a taco with guacamole and caviar looking fillings. Escamoles taste buttery and have the consistency like cottage cheese. That's not cheese but larvae hatched from the eggs of giant black Liometopum ants. The larvae are usually found on the roots of agave or maguey plants.

casu marzu

casu marzu

Casu Marzu

In Sardinia, Italy, casu marzu is a traditional sheep milk cheese. What is so disgusting about this cheese, you may ask? Well, it is so full of live insect larvae that it is actually illegal in Sardinia. The translucent white larvae are deliberately introduced to speed up the fermentation process, break down the fats and give the cheese a very soft texture. Some people remove the larvae from the cheese before eating but there are others who eat the cheese as it is. That is a lot of maggots they are going to get in their stomachs, ewww!

human placenta

Human Placenta

Eating the placenta is called placentophagy, it is common in the animal world and not so common with humans. However, there have been usage of human placentas in Chinese medicines and cooking recipes which is said to cure after-birth conditions like postpartum depression and postpartum hemorrhage. Not sure if that really works but it is downright disgusting to cook and eat one's own placenta after giving birth. Totally gross.

monkey brain

Monkey Brains

Eating monkey brains has been practised in China and some other countries like Indonesia. This is purely disgusting and the most barbaric way to torture an animal. The brain is sometimes eaten cooked. Now it gets worse... The monkey's head with part of the skull shaved, removed and the brains exposed is served in a restaurant in China. The brain is more popularly eaten raw straight out of the monkey's skull. In many cases, the monkey is still alive when its brain is eaten, that is worse than watching a horror movie. Imagine the torture and suffering the poor animal is going through. Other times, the monkey is already dead when its brain is served. Eating brains from animals can result in diseases like spongiform encephalopathies, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and prion which are fatal.

Live Fish

The eating of live fish originated from Taiwan. The fish is served with its body deep fried while it is still alive. Diners pick on the cooked parts of the fish to eat while the head of the fish is still moving and twitching. How cruel is that. It is now illegal to serve fish in this manner in Taiwan. However live fish is still available in the restaurants in China and Japan. In Japan, it is called Ikizukuri which includes fish, squid and octopus being eaten alive. Thankfully, Ikizukuri is banned in Australia.

In the following video, watch the live fish being eaten by the female reporter.

Dog Meat

Dog meat has been consumed in many countries in ancient times during times of hardships when there is no food available. Even though it is considered inappropriate and an offence to harm a dog in many countries, dog meat is still available for sale in some Asian countries. People who consume dog meat could contract rabies which can result in death, especially where many of the dogs that are caught are stray dogs with diseases.

Bull Penis

The poor bulls all ended up worse off than John Bobbit because their organs were cooked and eaten by humans. Bull penis is eaten in some South American and European countries as well as in Asia.

The video below shows how bull penis is prepared and cooked in Taiwan. It is not too gross to watch but having to eat bull penis does not sound too appetising but the people seem to enjoy eating this delicacy.

kopi luwak

Kopi Luwak

Coffee drinkers, do you know where the coffee beans really come from? Kopi Luwak is one of the most expensive coffee in the world. Well, it cannot be that bad... It is made from the beans of coffee berries in Indonesia. Some nocturnal animals in the jungle called the Asian Palm civets get to eat the berries first. Now, it gets worse...the pulp of the berries get digested and the beans in the berries are defecated, that means they come out with the poo of the civets. The beans in the poo are collected and washed thoroughly (they better be). The beans (without the poo) are then dried and roasted just like other coffee beans. Coffee, anyone?

That One Asian Friend of Yours on March 24, 2017:

The egg is actually quite nice. The yolk has a creamy but firm consistency. The duck is alright, as it mostly feels like cartilage. I most enjoy it with a seasoning of lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

RHONDA. on January 14, 2014:

lady rain (author) from Australia on February 05, 2013:

johndnathan, I've tried chicken feet before, I thought they were great :D But having seen a few friends slurp the juice from incubated duck eggs was totally gross!

John D Nathan from Dallas, Texas. USA on February 03, 2013:

Haha! This is a great hub!

The closest I've come to eating any of these foods is possibly chicken feet at a dim sum restaurant. It wasn't bad, though it wasn't that good. I would not be averse to trying some of these others, but they're just not available in Dallas, Texas.

DNCalkins from The Cold-Blasted North on November 08, 2011:

That's some gross food. Incubated Duck Egg is what really turned my stomach.

Mary Hyatt from Florida on September 26, 2011:
