Importance of Flavonoids

Many diet plans include purple and blue vegetables and fruit, which are loaded with flavonoids. Interestingly enough purple has always represented luxury, sophistication and royalty, and when it comes to food it represents outstanding healthy nutrition.

The blue and purple food is only healthy if it's natural, which means not artificially colored. Diets that include the colorful vegetables are lower in a calories, which is a real plus as they are healthy chooses.

Flavonoids Benefits

Flavonoids are the most abundant and powerful of all the phytochemicals contained in the foods we eat. Flavonoids have many categories with one group that makes our blood vessels healthier which helps the cardiovascular system and lowers our risk of heart disease. They are also beneficial for short-term memory loss associated with aging.

Also, they help improve her motor skills, which we use to perform large movements like walking and sitting as well as the delicate movements of our hands, wrists, fingers and toes. One of their most important functions is to help prevent cancer and also they slow the first stages of cancer development.

Healthy Purple Vegetables

There seems to be more purple vegetables available every time I go to the store. Over the past few years we have seen cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, snap beans, cabbage and pepper all in purple, to name just a few. This certainly isn’t the way vegetables looked a couple of decades ago.

Some of the best blue/purple food is found in fruit, such as blackberries, blueberries, dried plums/prunes, raisins, purple cabbage, a plant, and purple potatoes. It is easy to add these items to any diet plan that you can mix frozen blueberries with oatmeal or top a salad with raisins or shoe purple potatoes and roast them for a side dish to a meal.

Eggplant is the quintessential purple vegetable. It is a member of the tomato family; eggplant easy to grow, as well as, its pepper and tomato cousins. Eggplant varieties range from purple, violet to white. If harvested too late eggplant can be tough with large chewy seeds.

One new variety gives us plenty of opportunity to pick eggplant at the peak of purple perfection. The eggplant variety called ‘Hansel’ is a 2008, All America Selections winner. Carrot 'Purple Haze' is a 2006, All America Selections winner. At 7-8 inches long the ‘Purple Haze’ carrot provides many slices for a savory sight in a salad.

If you are tired of white cauliflower, then try purple. Try the deep purple of 'Violet Queen' with its open broccoli-like heads. Also, there is the 'Garffiti' cauliflower, which has an intense purple heads. Both look very attractive when served on a raw vegetable platter. 'Purple Passion' asparagus is reported to be sweeter and more tender than green asparagus.

There is no way of knowing when purple potatoes were first grown since there are many purple potato varieties, but we know Peru developed numerous varieties over several years.

They potatoes contain the same antioxidants found in blueberries- anthocyanin, which gives blueberries their blue color and purple potatoes their purple color. The color that anthocyanin takes is based upon the pH.

A purple potato is a kind of potato that has purple skin and or flesh (sometimes called blue) with varieties being Purple Peruvian, Davis Purple, Eureka Purple, Fenton Blue, Purple Mountain, Blue Tomcat etc.

The beet is a plant that is known in its numerous cultivated varieties. They are a tasty purple root vegetable known as the beetroot or garden beet. Purple basil is as lovely in the garden as it is on the plate. Numerous varieties of purple basil are available including: 'Ararat' (mottled green and purple); 'Dark Opal', 'Osmin Purple'; 'Red Rubin'; and 'Purple Ruffles'. Purple basil contains vitamin C, A and calcium, which makes it good for hair, skin and eyes.

Lavender is associated with increasing blood circulation and reducing insomnia, anxiety, migraines and depression as well as treating skin ailments such as psoriasis, acne, wrinkles, cuts and burns. Lavender essential oil also has both antifungal and antiseptic properties. Lavender is a fragrant flower to grow that is very beautiful.

Proper Cooking

Unfortunately the purple color fades to green during cooking of most vegetables. To retain as much nutrition and color, don't overcook vegetables and steaming the ones you can is best. Also adding a little lemon juice or vinegar to the vegetables during cooking may help to produce a prettier final product.

Eating them raw is ideal.

I love purple vegetables and fruit. Personally, I go for eggplants, onions (although I prefer Vidalia onions), and I eat lots of grapes, and blueberries... although blueberries are blue lol, but some of them look more purple and indigo to me. :)

Also, I like how in this article you decided on covering why people should eat purple natural items opposed to the regular choice that people write about like green, orange, and etc...

Of course, those are important too, but I like how you covered the other subjects that people often times just don't get to read enough about.

I know a diet that is call the "color" diet. It's base concept is to eat foods of different colors. It is a fun concept to staying healthy, especially with children. They love it. Purple is one that is hard for children -- until they find blueberries. Most children I know love blueberries.
