History of Cheese Cake

There are numerous cheesecake recipes, but cheesecake is believed to have first been made in Greece on the island of Samos. Athletics were served cheesecake at the very first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C.

Cheese was actually first made in 2000 B.C. as reported by anthropologists that found cheese molds. The cheesecake was considered a good source of energy, which is why it was fed to athletics. The cheesecake was also used as a wedding cake. At that time it was a simple recipe that only needed flour, wheat, honey and cheese. Athenaeus is credited with writing the first cheesecake recipe in 230 A.D., but the Greeks had already been making this dessert for 2000 years.

The Romans conquered Greece and added crushed cheese and eggs to the cheesecake recipe, which was served for special occasions. After that, Europeans had the recipe and put their own spin on making the cheesecake to their liking.

Now, there are many complex recipes with numerous flavors.

Cheese Cake Pie Recipe

There are not many deserts that are better than cheese cake, and this particular one is an easy recipe. Around 1959 or 1960, we had a neighbor from Australia named Mrs. Slack. We loved her, as she was so sweet to all the children in the neighborhood, and she was a fabulous cook.

This recipe is one we received from her, and it has been a family favorite for decades. It tastes like a cheese cake, but it is really more like a Cheese Pie. The first part of the recipe is for the graham cracker crust. I am too lazy for that; I buy them ready made. However, it is easy to make a graham cracker crust. The rest of the recipe is simple and easy.

  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 2 tbsp. Sugar

  • 12 oz cream cheese (let soften at room temp.)
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. Vanilla

Mix filling ingredients until smooth; pour into the pie crust. Bake at 325° for 20 minutes.

Remove pie from oven & let cool, then spread on topping.

  • 3/4 pint thick sour cream
  • 2 tbsp. Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. Vanilla

Return to oven for 5-10 minutes, let cool. Then refrigerate pie overnight

This recipe is so delicious. It was made for my birthday yesterday, rather than a traditional cake I had a cheese pie.

You can also top it with cherry pie filling or any fruit you enjoy. Just leave the topping off and add the fruit. I enjoy the flavor so much, plain works fine for me. I hope if you are a cheese cake lover you will try this easy recipe, because it is worth the effort.

Hanna, I hope your family likes it as much as we do. Cheesecake doesn't last long at our house either.

HealthyHanna from Utah on February 16, 2010:

We make cheesecake for birthday cakes. This will be a great new recipe.

Candles work just as well in cheesecake as they do in birthday cakes. The difference is, my family eat the cheesecake. With birthday cake and ice cream, especially the children, we just end up wasting it.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on February 15, 2010:

Roberta and Janny, Thanks for your comments. I hope you enjoy this excellent desert.

I love cheesecakes. Thank you for the recipe.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on February 14, 2010:

Support Med, I only make about 2 of these a year and there are others around to help me eat them because when you are trying to eat healthy with low calories it is too hard when it is so readily available. This is a very easy recipe, so when you do try it I doubt you'll have any problem with the baking.

Support Med. from Michigan on February 14, 2010:

This recipe looks really good! I like cheesecake a lot, but limit myself because when I first had cheesecake I was eating it everyday for about two weeks! I know, LOL, not so good. Soooooooooo, maybe around Easter or Thanksgiving or even Christmas, I'll try this one (never made one homemade).

I just don't want to become addicted again. Just reading about the graham cracker crust actually causes me to taste the flavor in my taste buds. Scary huh, LOL. Thanks for the rrecipe.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on February 14, 2010:

Tom, That is another on of my favorites. Thanks for the comment.
