If you’re looking for a cooking and marinating sauce that’s great for cooking both on the stove and the grill, let me recommend a great sauce that I have been using for over ten years. It's the ‘Mr. Yoshida's Original Gourmet Sweet and Savory Marinade and Cooking Sauce.

I first came across this sauce while doing grocery shopping at Sam’s Club about ten years ago. It was used in one of their shrimp recipe at a free give-away tasting stand. I couldn't resist, and I’ve been using it ever since. This sauce is a perfect blend of sweet and savory ingredients that are great for Grilling, Baking, and Sauteing. It always brings the best out of my cooking!

I have used this sauce for my shrimp and vegetable recipe, for marinating chicken before baking, It's also good for oven-baked fillet fish with stew. To use on fillet fish, I just use a little bit of the sauce, about one to two tablespoon mix in with blended red-bell peppers, onions, stewed-tomatoes and garlic. I then pour blended pepper sauce over the layers of fish and bake. Yum!

Shrimp with Broccoli and Carrots

Ingredients

  • 1 - 2 head of broccoli, (separated, and rinsed)
  • 2 carrot sticks, small to medium size (cubed, rinsed, and drained)
  • ½ a pound shrimp, (peeled, deveined, washed, drained)
  • ¼ cup onion, chopped
  • 1 fresh garlic clove, chopped or minced
  • ¼ teaspoon Lawry’s seasoned salt (I love this seasoned salt with all the natural flavors without the MSG)
  • 2 tablespoons Mr. Yoshida's Original Gourmet Sweet and Savory Marinade and Cooking Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Water, (optional)

Cooking/Sauteing Instructions

  1. Combine shrimp, onion, garlic, carrots, olive oil, salt, and gourmet sauce in a sauce pan or a medium to large wok.
  2. Place on medium heat. Saute, stirring for about 3 minutes until shrimp is now pink.
  3. Stir in the broccoli and water (use water only if needed to cook brocolli longer). Cover and simmer on medium heat for another 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat and let sit for a minute or two. Empty into bowl.
  5. Sauteed veggie mix is now ready to eat. Could be served with rice or eaten alone.

About The Nutrition Facts

Nutrition facts of this recipe is based on the entire 5 - 6 servings. Total fat and cholesterol is derived from the shrimp. To reduce or eliminate this, you can substitute the shrimp with lean meats, such as, turkey breast or chicken.

Note: Left-overs should be placed in a food container and stored in the refrigerator. This should be eaten within the week it was prepared. Avoid freezing leftovers as there will be changes in the consistency and taste.

My Kids Now Eat Their Vegetables!

Before Mr. Yoshida's Original Gourmet Sweet and Savory Marinade and Cooking Sauce, my kids didn't used to like to eat broccoli, collard greens and some other vegetables. Then I discovered Mr. Yoshida's cooking sauce. I use it to sauté most of my veggies, My favorite one to use it in is our family's Sunday’s regular “Shrimp with Broccoli Mix”.

Now, my kids not only eat broccoli, but sometimes even ask for a second serving of their favorite veggies, well except for my daughter, who occasionally picks out the carrots and shrimps and leave the broccoli behind.

I have to admit that the sweet taste of the sauce and the soy (salt) presence makes it so appealing to the taste bud. And, I do realize that us Americans, and especially our children favors sweet and salty foods, which has been one of the leading cause of obesity in our population. So, a word of caution here. Don't go bananas with the sauce, use moderately.

Though most of the recipes on the manufacturer’s website call for about half a cup to a full cup of the sauce, my advice to you is, use this sauce at a minimal portion in your recipes. All I use is about I to 2 tablespoon of the sauce, and have found the outcome to be very tasty and appetizing.

Gluten Sensitivity/Intolerance!

What's In Mr. Yoshida's Original Gourmet Cooking Sauce?

The two main ingredients in this sauce are Karo Syrup and Soy Sauce. Thus, it is noted on the sauce packaging that it contains wheat and soybeans. Other ingredients include, but not limited to, dehydrated garlic, sunflower oil and water.

Karo Syrup

Karo syrup is dark corn syrup that’s used in foods to soften the texture, add volume, prevent the crystallization of sugar, and enhance food flavor. This syrup has been used in the past as a common home remedy for treating infant constipation.

Soy Sauce

Soy sauce is a condiment produced by fermenting soybeans with Aspergillus sojae molds, along with water and salt. Studies have shown soy sauce to contain 10 times the antioxidants of red wine, and can help prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Soy sauce is also noted to be very high in sodium, having a salt content of between 14% - 18%. Checking the sodium content of this sauce may help you determine if it’s the right one for you.

The manufacturer's claim on the sauce's bottle reveals that sauce has

  • No artificial preservatives,
  • Zero grams of trans fat per serving, and
  • No added Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

It's Yoshida Or Nothing Else!

This sauce is the bum, I kid you not! It has gotten to the point where I had to order this sauce from Amazon since my local Sam's Club no longer carry it. It cost more, plus I have to pay postage.

The shipping of the sauce costs approximately $10 due to the weight of the bottle content. It does seem like a lot to pay for a sauce that cost less than $9 for a 63 oz. bottle. But, it's all worth it as nothing tastes good without Mr. Yoshida's Original Gourmet Sweet and Savory Marinade and Cooking Sauce. Nothing!
