While Jamie Oliver's on TV promoting feeding a family of four for "just £5", many frugal living experts are laughing at the abundance of his budget.

We know it can be done a LOT cheaper!

Cheese & Potato Pie is one of my favourite dishes. I probably eat this out of choice 6 times a month! This recipe for cheese and potatoes takes just a few minutes to put together.

Cheese and potato pie is a great way to cook leftovers too - I always do extra potatoes just so I can cook this the following day! Use up your leftovers with this quick, cheap and tasty leftovers recipe.

Cheese & Potato Pie Recipe


  • 0.5Kg potatoes
  • 0.25Kg strong cheese
  • Knob of butter
  • Sprinkling of salt
  • Splash of milk
  • Sprinkling of black pepper

Now, reading above, I'd make two notes:

1) Notice how the potatoes are twice the weight of the cheese. This isn't a precise science and just use what you've got. But because of this easy to remember ratio it means you can scale this up or down from 1 person up to a dozen or more!

2) Apart from the potatoes and the cheese, everything else is to your personal taste, which means if you ONLY have potatoes and cheese you can still make it!

Budget Cooking - Cheese & Potato Pie: Method

  1. Peel and slice the potatoes thinly and put these on to boil. Bring them to the boil then simmer until the potatoes are very soft. Alternatively, if you have a vegetable steamer, you can use that. I find steaming potatoes gives them a super texture.
  2. Cut or grate the cheese.
  3. Drain the potatoes and mash them. Put in a splash of milk, knob of butter and any salt/pepper to taste at this point. If you don't have these, or don't like them, it's fine to just mash the potatoes alone.
  4. Mix most of the cheese in with the potatoes.
  5. Place the potato/cheese mix into a greased ovenproof dish*. Top with the remaining cheese and put in the oven for 20-30 minutes, until the cheese on top is bubbling and nicely browned.

* I use silicone bakeware for all my baking now. You can make up your cheese & potato pie in a loaf tin or a cake tin. As nothing seems to ever stick to silicone bakewear it's super-easy to wash up once your pie's cooked.

What to Serve with Cheese & Potato Pie:

Wondering what to serve with this recipe for cheese and potatoes? Well, for me I keep it simple. When I make cheese and potato pie I usually serve it with baked beans or a splash of brown sauce, but here are some other ideas on what to serve with cheese and potato pie, something for all tastes:

Serve immediately with any one of the following, or whatever you fancy!

  • green salad
  • tinned tomatoes
  • baked beans
  • splash of brown sauce
  • Or you can even serve this as cheesy mash as an accompaniment to any other main meal you're cooking.
  • Sliced tomatoes on the top ... you can even put these on before you cook this cheese & potato pie if you want!

Quick Tip:

When you're next boiling potatoes, make too many and set some aside to be turned into a cheese and potato pie for maybe the next night.

What To Do With Leftovers

If you've got any leftovers, place them in a plastic/covered dish in the fridge, they'll be fine to heat up again for the next 3-4 days. You can microwave it for 3-4 minutes if you're in a hurry.

Freezing is possible, but sometimes mash can become a little watery when defrosted.

Can you reheat cheese, onion and potato pie up again?

Yes, it's perfectly safe. Just keep it cooled in the fridge. I reheat cheese onion and potato pie all the time!


You can use cheap cheese and cheap potatoes for this cheese and potato pie, as you're cooking it it won't matter, but get a mature cheddar or strong sharp cheese for maximum taste. Based on these prices, you can make the basic cheese & potato pie, serving 4 people, very cheaply!

You can use whatever cheese you have - so long as it's cheesy, it's good. Cheese and potato pie is a great way to use up hard or old cheese because the cheese melts so it no longer matters if the cheese doesn't look in tip top condition.

I usually use English Cheddar, which is a hard, white cheese, but you can use soft cheese, or hard cheese - whatever you've got. Sometimes your local deli or supermarket counter might sell odd scraps of end pieces of cheese cheaply, I've used these mixed cheese before.

I always put an egg in my mash makes it nice and rich,bit better than milk and I prefer black pepper, you can also mix in spring onions with the mash very tasty .

My nan used to do this for me all the time. We used to get minced meat with gravy as a base with lumps of potato in. Sort of a mix between cottage and cheese and potato pie really.

We like it with sausages but if there are a couple of slices of bacon left in the fridge, I'll fry them and chop them up before adding to the creamy mixture. It feels like an extra treat finding the crispy bacon bits!!!

I cooked this cheese and potato pie last night. I made up the mash and mixed in the cheese, then scooped out two huge spoonfuls into separate dishes and put those in the oven to bake for 20 minutes, to brown the cheese.

The rest of the cheese/potato mix I put into a sealed container in the fridge and today I'll be using some of it to top corned beef. First I'll either fry the corned beef a little, to get it hot/browned, then place that in a dish and top it with the cheese/potato mash and bake it in the oven for 20 minutes to brown, or I'll "cheat" and place the corned beef in a dish, top it with the cheese/mash and microwave it for 3-4 minutes until it's hot!

I'll be serving that with any one of the following:

- a splash of brown sauce

- some hot baked beans

- a tin of tomatoes

This is lush! I recently discovered & tried a similar recipe, only variation was to mix the cheese with breadcrumbs for the top layer and cook until golden. I have spuds boiling ready for a cheese pie as I type, might go put some sausages and beans on to go with it as a per some other suggestions (sounds like the perfect way to round off the meal)!

I used to have this at school in the canteen! My best friend and i loved it and we used to peel back the cheese on top and pour in loads of vinegar (we went a bit vinegar mad after discovering which differents parts your tounge tasted what in a science lesson!) I also make this but I usually put some garlic in my potatoes and then I place all my mixed ingredients into a 9 pie shell which have been partially baked, not brown but a little crisp..then just before its done i place more cheese and garnish with Sliced tomatoe until golden brown.

Cheese and potato pie is certainly more popular and welcoming now the nights are drawing in.

If you're going out on Halloween, or Bonfire Night, it can be lovely to prepare one before you go out and pop it into the oven when you get back. Or, if you've time, it's a real winter warmer of a dish to fill you up before you go out on cold nights.

I like doing the mash in layers, with layers of sliced tomatoes in between, then on top another layer of tomatoes before topping it with cheese.

I also put it in the oven for longer than 30 minutes (usually about 45) so that the cheese layer on top goes nice and crispy.
