Blueberry pairs well with a number of other fruits as well as herbs.

Great Blueberry Pairings

When blueberries are in season, it's easy to go nuts purchasing or picking large quantities at once. After you've eaten your weight in fresh blueberries, what do you do with the rest? One of the best options is to make a blueberry dessert. There are many quick, easy, and (relatively) healthy choices including the following.

  • Pies, Cobblers, and Crumbles
  • Cakes and Cupcakes, Including Cheesecake
  • Cookies and Bars
  • Muffins and Bars
  • Scones
  • Frozen Desserts
  • Even More Desserts! There were a few more desserts that I found that didn't fit into any other previous categories but still deserved to be here.

Pies, Cobblers, and Crumbles

I use my favorite crisp or crumble recipe with any seasonal fruit or what I have on hand in the freezer. While nothing beats a great pie or cobbler crust, you can't go wrong with a quick crumble either. No one will accuse you of being a lazy cook when you show up to an event with a delicious crumble.

Cakes and Cupcakes (Including Cheesecake)

Blueberry cakes is one of the most popular searches for blueberry desserts. If that's why you're here, hopefully you won't be disappointed. One of the best parts about seasonal fruit is that you can add it right into a wide variety of cake and cupcake recipes. Blueberries are no exception. I've linked some more unusual recipes below, but don't be afraid to include them in one of your standard recipes, too.

Cookies and Bars

Although I tend to go for crisps and shakes for fruit desserts, cookies are definitely one of my biggest dessert weaknesses, so you can't really go wrong here. I have also become a huge fan of bar cookies over the last few years. They are so easy to prepare and almost always taste just as good as traditional cookie recipes.

Muffins and Breads

Does it get more classic than blueberry muffins? Many muffin and bread mixes and recipes can be used with either type of pans. Make sure to check the directions and to adjust cooking times and temperatures as needed if you decide to switch it up this time. Don't discount the possibilities of mini muffin pans either. Miniature desserts are always sure to be a hit.

I created a separate category before I'd even researched blueberry scone recipes, simply because scones are just that cool. They are sure to wow people at any event. I had faith that I'd find lots of recipes to fill this section. It did not disappoint. Lemon and blueberry is a particularly popular combination for scones, but you don't need to feel limited to this.

Frozen Desserts

While some of us can't stop baking, even during the warm summer months when blueberries are at their best, you may prefer to cool off with a frozen blueberry dessert. Use your immersion blender to whip up a blueberry smoothie or shake or put together a batch of blueberry ice cream. I'm not sure what is better with frozen blueberry desserts: the flavor or the color.

Even More Tasty Blueberry Desserts

There were a few more blueberry recipes I found while researching recipes that didn't need their own categories but couldn't be excluded. They include tarts, turnovers, sauces, and custards. I have included one recipe link for each of these types of desserts. If you can't find something that suits your tastes or preferences here, check out Foodgawker for lots more recipes.

It's a perfect time of year to enjoy blueberries! Also, great minds think alike. :) That's too bad that you lost your blueberries this season. I'm sure that with all of the droughts this year, that won't be the only place to lose crops. Thanks for the links!

cardelean from Michigan on July 31, 2012:

You and I must have had blueberries on the brain Rose! I just published a blueberry breakfast recipe. :) Unfortunately our wild blueberries were all lost due to the early warm weather and then subsequent frost. Great set of resources. Thanks so much for the link and I'm going to link this one to my recent hub.

Haha yes!

One of my favorite parts about HubPages is reading so many recipes, too. I always enjoy learning about food and cooking processes. Honestly cheesecake isn't my favorite either. No worries! Cookie bars are a whole other story. :)

Joshua Zerbini from Pennsylvania on July 30, 2012:

Rose (I got your name right this time :) )

This is one of my most favorite things about HubPages: getting to read new recipes on a daily basis! I love everything you have shared here except the cheesecake part. But, that is not your fault, :) I just despise it for some reason. I love cookie bars though! Thanks for sharing Rose!
