Benefits of Carob Fruit

I share with you about a fruit tree grown in Croatia. Along the Dalmatian coast. The benefits of the Carob fruit are magical.

Carob fruit is a not as sweet fruit.

A Carob tree is a legume family of Fabaceae. An evergreen green that has flowers and is native to the Mediterranean region.

The pods are edible and grown in the middle east as well. Along the Dalmatian coast, we harvest Carob to create a distinctive homemade liquor. You would find this type of tree in many gardens as ornamental trees.

Sometimes used as animal feed, I heard that the pods were dried and eaten when times were hard. The ripe fruit is dried and ground to powder. Carob comes in powder, seeds and as it is in the pods. The ground powder is used as an ersatz cocoa powder, this was in the early 70s, as a natural food bar.

I learned that pods were used as a source of food as in chips, chocolate bars, or as treats if needed. Though carob treats are available to this day in health stores it is hard to believe that people still buy it.

I had no idea of Carob till I moved to Croatia. Along the way I discovered the many fruit trees and of how preserves are made and off-course the homemade liquors. The sweetish pod is pleasant. No bitterness, is natural and no caffeine.

Carob is from a French language, caroube, to the Arab name as Kharrub, and known as Kharubu and the scientific name is Ceratonia siliqua In the English language Carob is known as St. John’s bread, and in the African language the locust bean.

The Middle East had many centuries ago used the Carob seeds as gemstones.

In Croatia Carob is known as Rogac/Rogach.

Interesting fact about the Carob seeds in the Roman times was that pure gold was weighed at 24 carob seeds. Thus the reason for 24 carat gold meaning it is one hundred percent.

Fifteen meters in height with sturdy branches and dark brown pods. Male trees don’t produce fruit. The small flowers on the brown trunk the many flowers become visible and are pollinated when nature takes its course. The wind and small insects pollinate the flowers. The spurs from old wood acts in this process.

The elongated pods are dark brown, and curved. The pods are ripened in a year and take a year to develop into fruit.

I noticed the pods fall to the ground and that is a sign of harvest time.Pigs eat the pods as well. Found growing wild in the Mediterranean region to this day. In different parts of Europe there are different names for the fruit, Carob.

Other parts of Europe like Portugal, the tree is known as alfarrobeira, and the Carob fruit is called Alfarroba. In southern and eastern Spain Carob is called Algarrobo, and this is in Andalusia, Murcia, and in other parts of Spain as in Valencia.

A Carob tree is mainly grown in the Mediterranean region and I make delicious homemade liquor from this fruit.

I peel off the pods and soak the seeds in a local homemade drink called Rakija. It ferments in the alcohol for a month before it changes its color. A sweet liquor I drink as an appetizer before meals.

I recently discovered Carob seeds are beneficial to having good skin.

The Carob plant is rich in three vitamins, A, B, and E.

Magnesium, calcium, iron and potassium are among the important minerals we need for our skin.

What does Carob do for your skin?

  • Carob seed extract gives your skin a new layer of collagen.
  • It boosts collagen in two weeks.
  • Allows for a firm skin.
  • Wrinkles are finer, and after two months you will notice the disappearance of wrinkles on your face.
  • The wrinkles become smaller and skin gets smoother.
  • Regenerates wound healing.
  • The Carob extract is used in post-laser treatments and post-peel treatment.
  • It is nourishing in plant oils, and gives you great results.
  • Used in cosmetics and is eco-friendly.
  • In fragrances, a stabilizer, a binder, an enhancer, and in foods.

Adding Carob in your diet helps to calm Diarrhea, lowers cholesterol, reduces heart attacks, and stomach issues, like cramps in the stomach.

In Croatia Carob is known as Rogac/Rogach.

Side effects are not the same for everyone. Some people won't have any side effects. You are affected with a rash, hay fever and asthma attacks.

If you have too much of the Carob product you will experience insomnia, faster heart rate, become nervous, feel irritable, have an upset stomach and experience muscle tremor.

People who showed side effects, who ate nuts and other legumes, showed allergic reactions to Carob gum. Also, I found out that those who were allergic to peanuts did not have issues eating Carob seeds and gum.

  • Add carob powder to your diet.
  • Make smoothies from Carob powder.
  • You can sprinkle the powder on ice cream. I tried the Carob powder in pancake batter.
  • It adds a good flavor to baking treats.
  • Try making pudding from Carob powder.
  • Bake Carob brownies.

A limited dosage of Carob powder goes a long way to good health.

Everything in moderation to have a healthy lifestyle. Carob snacks are beneficial from its low sugar levels it has. It is naturally sweet, giving your body what it deserves.

A healthy intake and a healthy lifestyle when using Carob in your diet is a way of life in the Meditteranean region. Years spent in Croatia have taught me lots about the surroundings and what the land has to offer to local people.

Grown along the Dalmatian coast and gives people a good harvest every year. Every year, I make Carob liquor and sell to tourists. This is a way of life and I have learned about how all homemade liquors are made.

In every homemade liquor the base is Rakija. Most popular for its strength and smoothness of taste. It is colorless and blends in with all liquors.

Quite a process to make the liquor which takes a month to ferment.

It sounds like a fruit worth trying unless you happen to be allergic to it.
