Easy English Cottage Pie Recipe

Spaghetti Bolognese is one Italian recipe that I liked cooking. It taste delicious and so cheap to buy and very easy to cook.

Basic English Cottage Pie Recipe

Home made cottage pie recipe is very easy to prepare and cook. And when you cook too much of it, you can freeze some of it for future use for up to three months. In the cottage pie recipe, the meat used is minced beef while shepherd's pie, we use the minced lamb meat . This is the difference between Cottage Pie and Shepherd's Pie. Sometimes, I get confused with the two recipes but I now know that shepherd's pie is made of lamb's minced meat while cottage pie is made of minced beef.

There are so many ways of cooking this dish but I cooked it the way I know best. This is one basic English dish that I learnt to cook here in England. I like eating this dish and so with the shepherd's pie as well. Both dishes are prepared in the same way just different meat and slightly different ingredients. Both recipes are delicious.

Ingredients for Cottage Pie

  • 500 grams Beef Mince, lean organic
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 medium onions, chopped
  • salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 large carrot, grated
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil, pure virgin
  • 1 cube beef stock
  • 4 tbsp milk or 1 beaten egg, to glaze
  • 1 tbsp butter(optional)
  • 4 or 5 medium potatoes, cut into four pieces
  • 1 cup cheese(optional), grated

How to Cook Cottage Pie

  1. First peel the potatoes and boil them until cooked for the mash.
  2. Slice or cut up onions and garlic and set aside.
  3. Peel and grate the carrots (I used a peeler to grate the carrots)
  4. Heat the olive oil in a wok or frying pan, when hot add the garlic and onions
  5. When onions and garlic are soft, add the carrots and stir for two minutes.
  6. Add the mince beef, beef stock cube (crumbled), salt and black pepper stir in all the ingredients and mix all ingredients until the beef is slightly brown or half-cooked and set aside.
  7. Now we mash the potatoes with butter, milk, and a dash of salt and black pepper.
  8. In an oven proof dish, put the half- cooked minced beef, flatten it then add the mashed potato and level the top. You can either brush the top with milk or beaten egg or top it with grated cheese. I used milk and level the mashed potatoes with a fork.
  9. Put it in the oven to cook for 25 to 30 minutes until brownish color on top.
  10. Serve it hot when cooked with some peas or any vegetable of your choice.

Some useful tips on this Cottage Pie Recipe

With this recipe, you can put grated cheese on top of the mashed potatoes for 5 minutes, brown it, before taking it out the oven to serve. This is optional. Also if you are trying to lose weight or cut fat, you can omit the butter and the cheese. It is also nice to add some laurel leaves on the minced beef to give it a nicer aroma. You can also add green peas if you like. Try not to overcook the mince meat as it will turn out like rubber if overcooked.

Cook separate green vegetables if you like to accompany this meal, like beans, broccoli, cabbage, green peas, sprouts or any vegetable that you like really.

This lovely dish has evolved so much - that we all call it by different names,using lamb or beef or left over meat. Cottage pie or shepherds pie - it's just how we personally see it. You are quite correct.

Things change over time. I guess traditionally shepherds pie should be lamb. However, many years ago in England, in domestic science class, we were taught to cook shepherds pie using minced beef. Cottage pie was the same minced beef recipe but the potatoes covering the mash were sliced and covered with cheese. So Linda, it is still confusing for most of us.

Nice little hub, but your thinking got a bit turned around in answering Bill's comment. When you think about it, what does a Sheperd work with. The answer is right there, sheep. Better said "Mutton", but you'll find these days a Sheperds Pie is mostly made with "Lamb."

That leaves a Cottage Pie with the main ingredience being beef.

Bill, I think it is an English dish. I only learnt how to cook this when I came to England. I get mixed up with shepherd's pie and cottage pie. I think the mince meat used is lamb's meat in cottage pie and beef mince meat in shepherd's pie or the other way around. I can't remember Bill.

Hello again - thanks for this, I love Cottage Pie - it was a dish I was taught to cook when I was still at school - hmmm many years ago. I still cook it but often add things as you suggest, herbs, cheese, tomatoes.
