How to Make Mango Lassi

If you've had mango lassi in an Indian restaurant, you know how delicious this yogurt-based drink tastes. It's actually incredibly easy to make.

What you may not know is that there are many types of lassi, not just the kind made of mangoes! There are two main types of lassi. Savory lassi, called salted lassi, is made with salt and cumin. Sweet lassi, on the other hand, is made with fruits and sugar.

This drink has its roots in South Asia, particularly India and Pakistan. There, sweet lassi can be made with a wide variety of fruits. Mango lassi, however, has gained popularity worldwide, so this is the kind I will show you how to make!

Getting Started

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 whole mangoes (or 1 1/2 cups of mango pulp)
  • 1 cup of plain yogurt
    I actually used 7 ounces of Greek yogurt for this. You can use whatever kind of yogurt you like.
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
    You can use less if you wish, I just prefer mine to be on the sweeter side. If you're not sure how much you would like to use, try gradually adding the sugar and tasting the lassi as you go. It's better to add too little than add too much (because you can always add more.)
  • 1/2 cup of ice water
    For this recipe I used chopped ice, so it'll be an easier job on my blender

Making Mango Lassi

Peel and dice your mangoes. There are a number of ways to do this. I used a paring knife to peel the mango, holding the mango up on its end and cut the flesh off the mango as I rotated it.

Cutting a mango can be a pain, so you're in luck if you got your hands on some mango pulp. Below is a video on cutting mangoes. Don't worry if your mango pieces don't look fantastic, it's all going into the blender anyway.

Put the yogurt, ice water, sugar, and mango into your blender and blend until everything is mixed together and your ice is completed chopped.

Serve your mango lassi in a tall glass. There will be enough for two people, so you can share this yummy drink with a friend!

How to Cut a Mango

I've always found cutting a mango to be kind of a difficult process. When I cut a mango, it usually ends up kind of mushy, which is fine for things like mango lassi, but not so great for other things where you would like some nicer looking pieces of fruit.

Creating Your Own Variation

Mango lassi is really versatile. Since there is no heating involved in making this, there are really no chemical changes going on that would making experimenting difficult. Try adding more mango and less yogurt. Alternatively, if you want your drink to be more on the mango-y side, you can omit the sugar and double the mango!

Want vegan mango lassi? Completely omit the yogurt and substitute with a cup of silken tofu (or you can look for some vegan yogurt.)

You can also omit the sugar and use a flavored yogurt. Vanilla yogurt would be perfect for this, but lemon yogurt also has a nice, light flavor that would be great for mango lassi.

Definitely try this recipe. These are the most delicious drinks-used to always order them in a favorite Indian restaurant. They are a real treat but they can be a little heavy, so don't drink more than one before the food arrives.

I love mangoes and this seems to be an easy way to use them in recipes for variety. I usually just make a mess of them and throw them in the blender for a smoothie. This gives me some direction, order, better way to do it, Yah! Thanks!

Oh my goodness, this brings back memories of when I lived in Washington DC and enjoyed mango lassis at an Indian restaurant in Silver Spring, MD. I remember drinking two after a rather large meal. I simply could not stop; they were SO delicious. But I paid for it later because I was so full I thought I would buurst! Btw, the yogurt the restaurant used was not solid but liquid, so I'm thinking it's more like Greek yogurt than what one typically finds in the supermarket. Thanks so much for the recipe.
