What Toys to Buy for a 6 Month Old Baby?
When my son was six months old he had lots of toys. However there were some he hardly touched and others he loved and would play with everyday.
In this article I have tried to highlight the toys I would recommend for a six month old baby based on the toys my son loved and played with. I think when buying for a sixth month old it's good to choose toys that have lots of different play options so they are likely to play with them everyday without getting bored. It's also good to choose toys that will last for a little while and grow with the child. I have tried to recommend toys for different price ranges. I hope you find some inspiration on what to buy a six month old baby in the suggestions below.
Update: Since writing this article, I have had another baby and a lot of the toys suggested have been tried and tested on my second son when he was 6 months old too!
Vtech Baby Walker
Stacking Toys and Cups
Stacking cups are a simple, inexpensive toy but babies love them and they encourage all kinds of creative and constructive play. They can hide things under them, bang them together, knock down towers and when they get a bit older build towers themselves and teaching counting and colors. Both of my boys and my niece both loved stacking cups.
There are lots of different types of stacking toys such the two featured below.
Toys for Little Hands
At 6 months old my son was not yet crawling but he loved tummy time and rocking on his hands and knees. He was also just sitting up on his own and he loved to grab at toys and handle them. The next 6 months (between 6 and 12 months) saw my son exploring his toys a lot with his hands and toys that allowed him to do this were always very popular.
The great thing about toys that they can enjoy and explore with their hands is that it also keeps them still for a while. Although at 6 months you want to encourage them to move, once they are on the move it's hard work. Therefore toys like the Little Tikes kitchen featured below are great for encouraging them to sit in the same place for a while.
There are lots of balls suitable for babies of this age and it makes a great toy. They can feel the ball, start to move/crawl after it, roll it to somebody and have it rolled back to them. You can also get sensory balls with different textures which babies will enjoy touching and exploring.
There are lots of activity tables for babies of six months and older. The best ones are those that offer lots of activities which will help them learn too. It's best to get one that will grow with your child so it offers activities and games they can still enjoy as they get older. It's also good to get ones which offer a wide variety of songs. This means your child (and you!) won't get bored of the same tunes.
I like the Fisher Price table below and have this one at home for my baby.
My youngest son was a big fan of toys he could take to bed with him and he would have loved the Fisher Price soothe and glow searhorse.
Books and Educational Toys for 6 Month Old
Many toys featured in this lens have educational value but here are some more ideas or educational toys for 6 month old babies. The Fisher Price laugh and learn range does some good toys for young babies - check out the learning puppy below.
And don't forget books. It's never too early to introduce 6 month old babies to books.
Choose ones which are bright and colorful to attract babies attention.
There are lots of books with touch and feel sections with different fabrics and textures to explore. Babies of this age also like looking at pictures of faces. There are also some great books with mirrors and squeakers.
Best Toys for 6 Month Old Boy
Now, I actually think that both 6 month old girls and boys can play with the following toys but I know people specifically look for toys for 6 month old boys so here are a few examples of some "boy toys" for babies.
Soft blocks are a great toy for 6 month olds as they often have different textures which they can feel and explore. You can stack them up for baby and they can knock them down. They're good for developing motor skills as baby can start to pick them up, they can squeeze them and drop them. They can be gently thrown and put just out of baby's reach to help encourage crawling and movement. It's quite good to get brightly colored blocks to attract the baby's attention. Also, some soft blocks have flaps, make noises when rattled and other different features to help encourage touch and encourage play. Here are some good suggestions below:
Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes
As well as the Baby Einstein take along toy featured above there are lots of other musical toys perfect for this age too. Ideas include:
A drum : I was given a drum for my second baby when he was 6 months and it is one of his favorite toys. He loves banging on it with his hands. I have also shown him how to use the sticks to drum on it which he now does. He also enjoys eating the drum sticks. As babies get older they love drums and banging on them - it's a toy that will last a while.
Musical shakers - babies of this age love to shake and listen to the sounds. They love eating shakers too!
Other ideas include baby pianos, maracas and bells.
Check out a couple of ideas below.
This is another toy we have at home and my son who is now 2 still plays with this toy.
There are lots of activity centres that are popular with babies from 6 months and can be used as they grow up to toddle around.
Check out the activity garden treehouse which is one of the most popular.

Teething toys - there lots of teething toys for this age. Both my children loved Manhattan Toy Skwich classic toy at 6 months. They love knawing on it - and enjoyed using it as a teether. It is really easy to hold and put in their mouth. Babies also love watching the round balls that move. Lots of bright interesting colors to attract attention to.
Toys that move - Babies of 6 months love to watch the parts and toys that move. There are colorful moving beads in wheels which they enjoy watching. As they get older they will love to crawl after moving toys too.

I noticed that many of the toys listed above are educational toys. These are the types of toys that sort of "grow" with the child as they develop more they are able to do more creative things with the toys. Educational toys help keep the child's attention. Good list... thanks

I think the best toy for a kid would be simply a soccer ball! My little brother keeps telling me to give him a Kamagra Gel box, but that's not for kids!

Nice! I'd probably be giving IQ Baby Knock-Knock blocks to my 6 month old nephew. He loves to bite and put things in his mouth. Guess the blocks are the safest items to give. He'll have fun with it and will have difficulty biting it.Hope you could visit my lenses as well. Thanks

I love how you have put this together. What I especially like is that you have given your own opinions and views under each Amazon section. I don't feel like I'm being overwhelmed with sales modules. Blessed and 5*.
