Track Your Family Tree Back to the Feuding McCoy Family

If your last name is McCoy, you have to wonder if you are related to the famous Hatfield-McCoy feud. The McCoy family lived in Kentucky while the Hatfields lived across the river in West Virginia.

After the Civil War, these extended mountain families began feuding. Many lives were lost as they carried on an eye-for-an-eye retaliation against each other and their kinfolk.

My name isn't McCoy, but genealogy fascinates me. Who knows who you will find as you search for your family roots. Watching the mini-series created by Kevin Costner stirred up a lot of interest in McCoy family roots. Maybe you have a McCoy somewhere on your family tree.

I'm not sure if the feuding McCoy family from Kentucky links in to this McCoy family. It's likely that they go back to the same McCoy clan in Scotland for their roots.

Are You a McCoy, a Real McCoy?? - or just interested in the family and the feud?

Rocky Argabright on April 17, 2018:

My grandmother on my mother side was a McCoy she was forth generation granddaughter of Sara and Ran.

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on May 12, 2014:

@wendy-davisguess: Wendy, this is a fascinating story and I'll feature it on this page. Hopefully someone knowing more of the story will contact you.

wendy-davisguess on May 12, 2014:

My Mother's father's family name is listed as McCoy. She was born in Saskatchewan, North Battleford and Regina given as places she was born. She was given to St. Patrick's Catholic Orphanage. Her date of birth was 6/1 1931 given as year but her death certificate added 3 years making it 1926. 6-1-26 or 6-1-31. On a search, someone responded that Dean McCoy may have been my mother's father. A young man named Chadwick McCoy has facial features which closely resemble the boys in our family and my mother's features lead on to believe she is also a member of this particular clan of McCoy. However, I would like to try to find out definitively regarding the McCoy line in my family as I am writing a book about my mother's life.

Grandmother's name was Marguerite MacCormack. Daughter of Frederick. Regina was their homestead. Mother's name was Betty McCoy MacCormack and may have been Elizabeth at birth. She was seen to be with a brother named Benny who may have been her twin brother. MacCormack morphed into McCormack as time went on.

Can anyone help me try to verify the "real" McCoy family lived in the area during this time? I have photographs, documents to document mother's background as well as border crossing with McCoy listed as family name and a book written called Our Roots/St. Patrick's Catholic Orphanage with a picture of my mother in it dated 1947. I am in touch with this particular catholic church and a documentary film maker, editor and possibly publisher are on standby. However, substantiating this has proven difficult. We were fragmented and family secrets hid our past.

Thank you very much.

@Virginia Allain: I'm not seeing the census records which ought to show us more. Good luck with your search.

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on April 20, 2014:

@wandaleec: I did find (on, this info: Name: Charles H McCoy and Bessie

Gender: Male

Residence Year: 1930 to 1944 (according to city directories)

Street Address: 905 Pine

Residence Place: Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan

Occupation: Janitor

Publication Title: Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, City Directory, 1937

Then in 1952, they show up 83 Florence avenue in Pontiac, Michigan

wandaleec on March 09, 2014:

Hello,,My Grandfather was Charles Henry McCoy,,on the 1940 census it shows his state of birth as ILLINOIS . His birth would have been about 1890. I found a 1940 census showing him living with his wife Bessie Cummings McCoy , and several children ( there were 11 living) my mother Velma McCoy Patton was ten at that time . They lived in Sault Ste Marie Michigan at that time. I know nothing before that. I believe he was in the Army and that is how he ended up in Michigan. Also there may have been a brother ( or other close relative ) named Levi McCoy,

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on March 08, 2014:

@fknochelman: I did a quick search but nothing definitive. Best of luck in tracing your family lines.

fknochelman on March 07, 2014:

My three times grandfather is george mc coy . he was born in 1804 in Kentucky and married to Arista they had 7 children. lived in Lawrence county, Kentucky in 1850. Trying to make the connection to the Real McCoy's. Anyone know of this family

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on September 29, 2013:

@tammy-scot-3: I looked on It shows her father as William H. McCoy born in 1863 and her mother as Susan Hooser. Louisa's grandfather was William McCoy born in 1835 and married to Rutha. You will have to research further using those names, but the McCoy families had many children, so it is likely that she connects in there somehow.

tammy-scot-3 on September 29, 2013:

Hello my great grandma was Lousi or Louisa McCoy she was born Oct 25th 1884- April 6,1936 she was married to Tivis hinkle..Was my great grandma a real Mccoy from the Hatfield a Mccoy fued? She was from what we gather either from pike county ky or Martian county

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on September 01, 2013:

@anonymous: Do you have a birth date or death date for any of these ancestors? That would be a big help for finding their parents and possible link to the McCoys of the feud.

anonymous on September 01, 2013:

Hi! My great grandmother was Cora Mae mccoy and her parents were Thomas mccoy and Mary Alice Harrison. I believe they also had a son named Charles mccoy. Thomas is from Kentucky and Mary Alice is from Tennessee. That's as far as I got. You think I'm related to the real mccoys?

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on August 15, 2013:

@anonymous: I found a John Bertie McCoy married to Mary Blackwell on They had a son Walter. The line didn't go back any further on that tree though.

anonymous on August 15, 2013:

My great-great grandfather is Walter McCoy b.1874. His father was John Bertie McCoy could I be a descendant of these McCoys?

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on July 12, 2013:

@anonymous: Your grandfather has a fairly unique name so that should help your search. Put "Harison Idale McCoy" into a Google search. Use the " " marks for a better search. Is that Harison with one r or 2?

It also helps to search with a combination of names like "Harrison and Marie McCoy" if you have your grandmother's name. See if you can get back about 2 more generations then you will be close to the feud era and can see how your family might interconnect.

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on July 12, 2013:

@anonymous: Allan, you need to follow your name back as far as you can (father, grandfather, great-grandfather using what your family knows. If Australlia has immigration or ship records, check those to see what ancestor first came to the country. Then you give me that name and I can check it in the American records on

For each of the names, do a search on the Internet too, to see if you can connect with the free genealogy information on sites like Genie or someone's personal family tree site.

anonymous on July 11, 2013:

hi my name is allan McCoy I live in Australia and have done for several generations , I have been told that I have American family way back in my family tree , I would like to know what part of the usa they came from would that be possible , thanks

anonymous on July 09, 2013:

I would like to know my family tree better . My fathers name is Randy S MÄCOY .My grandfather is. Harison Idale MÄCOY.

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on June 17, 2013:

@anonymous: Usually a black link to the family tree might come through slavery in that era. It did not seem that these mountain families had any slaves.

anonymous on June 17, 2013:

Would any black McCoy's be related to this family?

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on March 11, 2013:

@anonymous: Thanks for visiting and sharing your family history with us.

anonymous on March 11, 2013:

@Virginia Allain: Sallie Hollen was my GGGGGrandmother .Dennis Bray was my Grandfather .Carr Simpson my great grandfather would have been late 1880's , Cox was my ggrandmother America or Merca Hollen Cox who married Green Cox .The names in my ancestry ties me to both Hatfield and Mc Coy families .I believe DNA would no doubt prove this . I have no doubt but it would be proof .

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on January 16, 2013:

@anonymous: How exciting to link to such a colorful family history. Try to get names and dates from current family members as far back as you can. Online searches or a site like will help you make the links.

anonymous on January 16, 2013:

My Great Grandmother America Hollin Cox born 1901-1903 lived her entire life on what was then called Crawfish.

My Grandfather on my daddy's side was named Dennis Bray lived in Leslie County Kentucky . Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on November 11, 2012:

@anonymous: I've found it worthwhile to subscribe to where you can track decendants of the McCoys using the U.S. Census and other records.

anonymous on November 11, 2012:

I was wonder where did the McCoys go after the fued did they move to any southern states?

anonymous on November 11, 2012:

My Grandmother was a McCoy and I just wonder if we were Related to Randall McCoy.

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on November 11, 2012:

@anonymous: I have a subscription to Ancestry and found this info about her. She died on 15 Mar 1894 - Elk Creek, Logan, West Virginia, USA. Her first name was likely Reesa, with Ruth being her middle name, with some variations depending on which family tree you look at on the site. I didn't have any luck on Find a Grave in locating where she is buried.

anonymous on November 10, 2012:

can you tell me more about Ruth McCoy ,sister of "Ol Ran"?She is my 4th great grandmother . I know her birth ,marriage to Wm Anderson Farley, her children, but not her death or gravesite. My g grandmother was named after Ruth's daughter Martelia.

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on October 22, 2012:

@anonymous: On, I see this info. Since she was married in Pike County, Kentucky, I'd say she's surely a real McCoy though I didn't follow the line back further. On her marriage record, it shows her name as Dollie B. McCoy. That might help you trace it further.

Birth: 29 Oct 1870 - United States

Marriage: 26 Jul 1894 - Pike, Kentucky, United States

Death: 05 Jan 1908 (5 Jan 1908) - Pike, Kentucky, United States

Parents: James Epperson McCoy, Emily A. Smith

Spouse: William Jeffrey Lowe

anonymous on October 17, 2012:

My great-grandmother was Dolly McCoy. She married William Lowe. Not sure where she is in the "McCoy" family. Any idea?

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on October 07, 2012:

@anonymous: Brandon - you need to find out your grandparents' names and then the great-grandparents, if you can. That should put you back in the era of the feud or close to it. See if you can match those names to any of the ones I show here.

anonymous on October 07, 2012:

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on June 28, 2012:

@Ann Hinds: I'm thinking to make a page about Hatfield genealogy next. I'd better get onto that.

Ann Hinds from So Cal on June 28, 2012:

We are not a McCoy or a Real McCoy but we are Hatfield. A portion of the family moved to Tennessee later and became part of our family.

Virginia Allain (author) from Central Florida on June 25, 2012:

@anonymous: I greatly appreciate your stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the mini-series. I'm glad to meet a "real McCoy."

anonymous on June 25, 2012:

I am a real McCoy, son of Duane, son of Orville, son of Sam, son of Randall. I was very disappointed in the mini-series. Very unrealistic and inaccurate. Another Costner ego trip

Peggy Hazelwood from Desert Southwest, U.S.A. on June 17, 2012:

I'm not a real (or fake) McCoy but plan to watch the TV mini-series. Sounds fascinating.
