Do You Know How to Find a Fairy?

how-to-find-a-fairy

Please tell us where the fairies live

If you know how to find a fairy, please let us know.

As a child I looked everywhere for fairies but never could I find one, now Claudia is on the fairy quest too.

Many a Sunday, Claudia and I have set off searching for signs of fairy life. We explore far and wide, in all the likely places, examining hints from fairy story books. Fairies prefer a particular habitat and so we keep a sharp lookout for any fairy-friendly spots

One day we'll find a fairy.

Where do you start? - When you're looking for a Fairy?

Some guidelines to finding fairies

Fairies are most commonly found in dells. Shady dells in particular (the shadier the better).

Keep an eye out for signs of fairy activity, such as fairy rings, circles of mushrooms which appear overnight.

If you're very observant you can sometimes catch, out of the corner of your eye, a trace of fairy glitter. Fairyshine is best seen just after sunrise.

Fairyshine

Squint slowly

When you catch a glimmer of fairyshine, turn slowly and squint along the lines of glitter. Follow these magical beams as far as you can.

One day we found a fairy tree - (but no fairies)

I found this tree when I was a small girl too - but it was bigger then.

The Fairy Tree

From 1931 to 1934, Miss Ola Cohn worked on a tree trunk in the Fitzroy gardens.

She carved delightful fairies, dwarves, gnomes, a kookaburra, koalas and a host of typical Australian animals and birds to transform the trunk into a thing of beauty.

Inscribed on the tree's plaque :

"I have carved in a tree in the Fitzroy Gardens for you, and the fairies, but mostly for the fairies and those who believe in them, for they will understand how necessary it is to have a fairy sanctuary - a place that is sacred and safe as a home should be to all living creatures."

We made a Fairy Garden - To Entice the Fairies

Could there be a Fairy under the Bridge?

how-to-find-a-fairy

Perhaps a troll lurks under here but Claudia isn't the least bit concerned about trolls. Trolls are scaredy-cats she says, they're frightened by goats. Obviously anyone who's afraid of a goat is not worth a second thought. .

We call out, quietly, to any fairy who may be under here.

Can we find a Water Fairy?

Like everyone who's had a sensible upbringing, I was warned about Water Fairies. Some of them are distinctly unfriendly.

Claudia and I don't look too hard near the water and we never look for fairies down the creek in snake season.

In the Creek? - Could a Fairy be in the creek?

how-to-find-a-fairy

There's something in the creek but it's not a fairy

We Read about Fairies - Looking for Clues

One day we found a little village - A Village for Fairies

how-to-find-a-fairy

Claudia believes these are Town Fairies. We want to find the Wild Fairies although a brief glimpse of an urbanised sprite would be very welcome.

Will we ever Find a Fairy?

Claudia hasn't given up hope of finding a fairy although it's been a long time now.

She has told me that even when I die, she will keep looking. Heavens, I certainly hope we can find a fairy before that!

One day we will find a fairy. I know this in my heart

How about you?

Hannah on November 16, 2014:

I LOVE fairys I have been tiring for years

Besarien from South Florida on November 14, 2014:

My father told me that fairies are attracted to your garden if you make them a tiny little fairy cake and leave it out on a full moon. Also you can leave them little bits of ribbon in the springtime or four or five inches of embroidery thread. Sometimes they let the birds steal them to make colorful nests. Sometimes though, the fairies get there first. That's what I've heard!

CharMarie on August 14, 2013:

I think I've enjoyed your lens the most out of all I've read so far! It was so happy and refreshing! My grand-daughter and I have a fairy garden, too, but we haven't found any fairies yet. But we will keep looking! I believe in fairies! Hugs!

Colin323 on August 08, 2013:

I live not far from Cottingley, West Yorkshire - the place where the fairies appeared to two young girls, who took photographs of them (Google it up if you want to see the photos - 'Cottingley Fairies'). I still believe they are genuine!

anonymous on June 06, 2013:

I just love fairies, there look, their style, their magic wand. I was so inspired by their elegant look and as I read so many stories and comic books on them and watching cartoon and films. It was so mysterious to know for little child, Where does a fairy reside? I hope one day fairies will come back to this Earth. Amen!

Lorelei Cohen from Canada on June 04, 2013:

I visited this article awhile ago and as soon as I saw your opening image I felt just as charmed as I was the first time I visited this page. You make me want to sprinkle fairy dust all over my back yard. I am definitely charmed by your article.

anonymous on May 28, 2013:

I've looked all over I've talked outside to hem and I feel them but I've never ever seen them. I've also made a fairy house for them. I just don't know how to find a fairy. If you have any videos you would like to share with it would be greatly appreciated. And if whoever reads this you can text me and give suggestions. THANK YOU!

I think I sor one in the garden of my old house(we moved when I was 2) and when I was 1 I sore a purple fairy come out from behind these purple flowers. she told me something but I cant remember. im not sure if she was an imaginary friend or not but I cant remember much :/ it was just a normal backyard with some flowers growing on the fence too. well I was poor and my dad was always bashing my mum so it coulda been a fairy taking pitty on me or my imagination helping me feel better in tough times

dragonlildragon on October 11, 2012:

Pagan legends say that one can meet the Faery Queen should she choose you, if you are to sit under the Hawthorne tree on Beltane. Beltane is celebrated on May 1st, but you may have better luck on May 5th.

anonymous on July 10, 2012:

Are fairys real

minemyown on June 24, 2012:

Evelyn Saenz from Royalton on June 06, 2012:

I love the fairy tree and the beautiful photos. My grandmother helped me look for fairies in Iris blossoms. She said that the beards of the Iris are their rugs.

anonymous on May 31, 2012:

i have seen one they are everywhere and not only found in forests. i think you need to have a pure heart. they dont like people eating meat either. they watch us they use glamour so we cannot see them. they love animals and play with rabbits, etc. they can talk to animals.

Winter52 LM on May 23, 2012:

Looking for some ideas for my back yard and guess where I landed. :) Now... what to do first. :)

Nimsrules LM on February 19, 2012:

Cute lens. I do believe in fairies though, they're hiding behind the bushes somewhere :)

anonymous on February 12, 2012:

Fairies seek noble hearts and souls, you will sure find a fairy if you are earnestly looking for one. Keep up the search.

jimmyworldstar on February 10, 2012:

I assume fairies live in isolated areas of nature, if they exist. I sure don't see them in the city hailing a cab!

termit_bronx on February 10, 2012:

Amazing lens, lovely - and great photos :)

cupcakekitten20 on February 08, 2012:

This is so cute and sweet =)

Barbara Walton from France on February 04, 2012:

A lovely, imaginative lens. the nearest I've come to finding a fairy is the Flower Fairy books. Also fascinated by the sisters who took 'photgraphs' of fairies in the early days of photography, and they had all the experts fooled. There's a film about them.

We do have lots of red fairy toadstools, the sort with white spots, (fly agric), that grow down by Videix lake, so I expect there are elves and fairies there.

Aquavel on February 03, 2012:

I love your description of fairyshine. I imagine both you and Claudia have a good bit of fairy within and I'm sure they will make themselves visible to you. Fairies may show themselves at dusk or early morning when you forget to actively look for them. Tme stands still and you can see the fairies. Like the mists of Avalon.

Lorelei Cohen from Canada on February 02, 2012:

There are fairies everywhere but they will only let you see them when it is their desire to be seen. I am sure though that they are watching you and giggling like silly little old ladies do when something amuses them.

lilymom24 on February 02, 2012:

What a delightful and fun lens. Even though my daughter is 12, we will still be looking for fairies and building them a fairy house or two. We can sometimes even get the boys in on the task.

AlleyCatLane on February 02, 2012:

Such a charming lens. Wish I had some suggestions. Sounds like you are already doing everything I would. Hope Claudia and grandma find one soon. Blessed!

Mona from Iowa on January 09, 2012:

Absolutely charming lens. Blessed.

Ann Hinds from So Cal on January 15, 2011:

Do we ever give up hope of finding a fairy? Angel blessed and added to the lens I am working on for grandparents.

ChiiSakuraJones on December 22, 2010:

hello i am chii and i know that fairys are real because they will pick you its hard to look because they are very timid and shy ever sence i was a little girl a fairy follows me i can talk to it and everything it told me stories of the earth before humans and how beautiful it was. it told me thata long time ago they were happy to invite the humans to the earth but we took them and hunted them and sold them so they went into hiding and in time people just forgot about them and stoped looking. this is not fake but it is the human's fault why they hide from us

Missmerfaery444 on October 18, 2010:

Fantastic! I can't wait to go fairy-hunting with my little Freya when she's older. She already stares at the air when nothing is there, so I'm guessing she's seeing them already ;)

Beautiful lens, congrats on the purple star. Lensrolling to my Working with Faeries lens!

Sandy Mertens from Frozen Tundra on October 18, 2010:

Sweet story. Congrats on your Purple Star.

Nancy Tate Hellams from Pendleton, SC on October 18, 2010:

What treasured memories you and Claudia are making together. I hope you find the Fairies. I loved seeing the Fairy Tree. Wishing you many hours of fun hunting! Congrats on a well deserved Purple Star.

anonymous on October 13, 2010:

Sweet story and wonderful memories for both you and Claudia. I love the idea of fairies and all other mythical winged creatures. The winged creatures in Avatar were probably my favorite part of that movie! I, too, love that fairy tree. What an incredible work of love and artistry! Thanks for sharing it.

anonymous on October 13, 2010:

Well we know we have had elves and fairies in our house - the dishwasher elves work so hard to make our dishes so clean and bright (although they seem to be on strike at the moment because the dishwasher is not working properly) and of course the tooth fairies are always so polite and reply to the letters my girls used to write to them. Their writing is absolutely beautiful.

We are so lucky that we can go Fairy hunting by the streams at any time of year, because we dont have a problem with snakes in the UK and I am really looking forward to be able to do that with my new grandchild, who is due in January :) Well, when s/he is a bit older of course!

As ever Susanna, you bring some real magic to this lens and I love the way you are able to view tthings through the eyes of your garnd daughter and bring some magic into her world as well

kimmanleyort on October 12, 2010:

Claudia will never forget the fairies. :) I'm partial to fairy shine myself. I love to capture it with my camera.

GrowWear on October 12, 2010:

A magical day with your Claudia, and I bet there are many others, too. The Fairy Tree is beautiful.

SofiaMann on October 11, 2010:

Very beautiful topic. Congratulations.

Jennifer P Tanabe from Red Hook, NY on October 11, 2010:

Love that tree! I'm sure the fairies do appreciate it too.

Ashly Rain on October 11, 2010:

Fabulous lens! Squid Angel blessings and nominated for LOTD.

justholidays on October 11, 2010:

Well, signs are that you have found a fairy - she lies in your computer: you made 340 lenses!

I've never seen such beautiful tree trunk! What a wonderful piece of art. And I really enjoyed looking at those little houses. One question, though... what's in the creek? A squid???

This is surely the fairest lens I've ever seen!

sheriangell on October 11, 2010:

I wish I had tips for finding fairies, but it appears you have cornered that market very well. I loved Ms. Cohn's tree and would love to see it one day.

I hope you and Claudia are successful in your fairy quest.

Blessed today by a Squid Angel and featured on Pay It Forward.

anonymous on October 11, 2010:

Well done. Thank you.

anonymous on October 11, 2010:

I hope Claudia never stops looking for a Fairy...it is an enchanting adventure through life whether one makes itself visible to you or not.

Ruth Coffee from Zionsville, Indiana on October 11, 2010:

I like it that Claudia has taken things into her own hands and gone looking for a fairy. I never found one, but it may well be because I was too passive and waited for one to simply appear.

Indigo Janson from UK on October 11, 2010:

This is enchanting. I have a feeling Claudia is going to be successful in her quest to find a fairy. Delighted to lensroll to my Fairy Face Paint.
