Thoughts on Being a Grandmother

Now I understand all those gloating grandmas!

It's amazing how your life and your thoughts change when you become a grandma. Like when your children call to see if you can watch the baby and you drop everything just to get a chance to spend sometime with your grandchild. All of a sudden it doesn't matter what's on TV anymore, who wants to go where or how nice a day it is outside... your priorities change. Suddenly the only focus is when are they coming and how long do they get to stay?

In all fairness I have to say I've only been a first time grandma for 6 months now...and some people might say the excitement may wear off and all of a sudden I'll be dodging those phone calls one day. Curiously though, I don't think that will happen with me and my grandson. I think we've already got some kind of weird cosmic bond going on. Even though he's only 6 months old, he has grandma absolutely wrapped around his finger. And I don't mean just a little bit, I mean a lotta bit.

Just minutes ago as I was working on my laptop I glanced over at him because he was so quiet. Sure to find him asleep, I was shocked when he shyly flitted his eyes at me and covered his face and smiled. I could tell right then and there that we had a special bond. Sitting here quietly together, me in my chair, him in his seat, just content to be together...

Now that's something special in my book.

All grandparents are partial!

Now I know I'm partial here because after all this is MY grandson but I have to say that he is one of the chillest kids I've ever met. Shocking because his dad was the exact opposite (maybe this is Gods way of being nice to me in my old age) Whatever the reason, I am blessed. This is a kid that only cries when he needs something. I kid you not, he's so chill that he scares me sometimes... I think he's an old man in a little babies body. Heck, he doesn't even cry when he's done a poop! Imagine that! I would cry my butt off if it were me!

So taking all this into consideration I'm just about sure I've got the greatest grand-kid in the world ( yeah yeah I know all you other grandparents out there you will beg to disagree) I just bet you will say that you have the best grand-kid in the world. OK... So we are all prejudiced about our grand-kids. Rightfully so. Being a grandparent is absolutely one of the greatest things our kids could have ever done for us, right?

Your thoughts on being a grandparent

Dorsi Diaz (author) from The San Francisco Bay Area on March 29, 2010:

Thank you so much for everyone that has come by and read about my "grandma" thoughts! I'm about to be a grandmother again in 2 days and it's very exciting! This time a little baby granddaughter to spoil and love.

Great read! 5* Cant wait to read some more!

LondonGirl from London on July 12, 2009:

My parents seem quite keen on grandparenthood too - my Dad drops in to our flat 1-2 evenings a week after work, and my mother goes from point A to point B 6 miles away via our flat more often than you'd think likely (-:

BetsyIckes from Pennsylvania on June 16, 2009:

I'm a grandma too! It is great! Great hub!

Jmell from El Paso, Texas, USA on June 10, 2009:

Dorsi, I'm not a grandma yet.....and I can remember NEVER wanting to be! That was several years ago. Now, I'm actually anticipating that wonderful experience of loving a baby, yet not being totally responsible for it's entire survival! Just sweet love.

Rochelle Frank from California Gold Country on June 08, 2009:

Yes, it is life changing . . . a whole new perspective. Enjoy your little one, he IS beautiful ( you can say that about boys, too, for awhile).

Rebecca Graf from Wisconsin on June 08, 2009:

He's beautiful! Enjoy those times. the times with my grandparents who have all passed away are still very precious to me.

Now that's just groovy =) Great hub!

Triplet Mom from West Coast on June 08, 2009:

Dorsi - How could you not be wrapped by that face. He is absolutely precious. I am sure you are a wonderful grandmother!

Arby Bourne from USA on June 08, 2009:

What a perfectly adorable little guy! My mom is my son's favorite person lately. I would say that they definitely have a special bond, too. He has just learned to say a version of "Grandma" and so goes to the door and cries for her when he's fed up with mom & dad.

Loved this. Lucky grandboy you have. :)

Ethel Smith from Kingston-Upon-Hull on June 08, 2009:

Aww. Not much else I can say. Sweet hub

Al Hawkes from Cornwall on June 08, 2009:

The fascination and willingness to look after Zach does not wear off at all, I am a grannie and have been for 2 years, still love to look after him and indeed do so every weekend, lucky me.

I think your Zach has a very special Grandma too.

Om Prakash Singh from India, Calcutta on June 08, 2009:

Gypsy Willow from Lake Tahoe Nevada USA , Wales UK and Taupo New Zealand on June 07, 2009:

I do agree with your thoughts here. I have written a hub on the same subject..

Vibhavari from India on June 07, 2009:

Hi Dorsi,

Your grandson looks so adorable! It is true you know, that babies are intelligent beings, more so because they have just arrived from the other side so their wisdom and intelligence is "pure", not yet been affected by the crazy world they have come into. So you are right on target when you say " I think he's an old man in a little babies body." :)

Dennis Ebris from Florida on June 07, 2009:

This is just the sweetest little hub. I work with some women and I hear them bragging about their grandchildren. It's really nice to hear. My Mother and my Mother-In-Law are both pushing to be come grandmas as well! But My wife and I are holding off a bit until we are firmly grounded financially. I'm very happy for you and your latest family member!
