Quotes About Aunts

Sharilee has been an aunt since 2001, when her first niece was born. Her second niece was born 2 years later. She adores being an aunt.

This is a Follow Up Article About Aunts

A while back, I wrote an article about the unique relationship between aunts and nieces, and it was one of my most popular articles.

There are so many people searching for information about aunts and nieces, that article managed to make it to the front of the search engines. It goes to show that there are many proud aunties out there, just like me!

This article is a follow-up to that first article that I wrote. This page has more quotes I have found about aunts in literature and popular culture, along with some background information about aunts in our culture.

I love to write about being an aunt because it is one of the most important roles of my life. Being an aunt can be one of the most rewarding positions that you will ever have!

Quotes About Aunts From the 19th Century

The following quotes are from the nineteenth century, where the image of the aunt was very common in literature. The aunt was often portrayed as a benevolent woman, who loved children, and seemed to be the one that shared stories with her nieces and nephews.

There were dozens of books that focused on the aunt's stories, where the aunt narrated a set of children's stories.

I have found this is true to life in today's world, too, as aunts are often the ones who entertain the children, and tell them some of the family history.

"I want to live with both my aunts..."

--Charlie Seymour, or the Good Aunt And The Bad Aunt, by Miss Catherine Sinclair, 1847

"Their aunt was so kind that they were all glad that she had come..."

--A Gem Of An Aunt, And The Treat She Gave, by Mary E. Gellie, 1881

"Aunt Martha had finished her nap ...."

--Aunt Martha's Corner Cupboard, by M. and E. Kirby, by Mary Kirby, 1875

"There lived once a good old lady, whom all the children called Black Aunt ...and Aunt loved the children very dearly; and they were very much attached to her, for she was always kind to them."

--The Black Aunt: Stories and Legends For Children, by Clara Volkmann Fecher, 1848

"Oh Aunt, don't send me away from you..."

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on March 14, 2017:

Cynthia, you definitely sound like a proud aunt! I don't mind you bragging, at all. It sounds like you have good reason. You must have some fascinating dinner table conversations, if you ever manage to get everyone together. Thanks so much for the comment and have yourself a wonderful evening!

Cynthia Zirkwitz from Vancouver Island, Canada on March 12, 2017:

Thanks for this collection-- I had a ton of aunts when I grew up and appreciated them all along the way. My teenage aunts were like older sisters and were there for me when I was ready to launch into the world, no where as critical as my mother, the family's eldest daughter. My father's only sister was a great source of encouragement and treated me as a peer although she was older than my Dad. Even my aunts-by-marriage were kind and interested souls.

I was a sort of hit-and-miss Aunt myself in my younger years because I got consumed with my own kids and work, etc., but I appreciate my adult neices and nephews and try to show some interest in their sweet children. I am proud of some of my inlaw-nephews and -neices too, like Rick who has recently started a foundation to get more educational and preventative measures in place for people with mental health issues; like Mike who is a doctor; like Jessica who is an eagle expert flying around speaking at universities. I have a nephew who is a Mountie and a nephew who is a biological scientist but who has taken time out to help his Dad, now in his sixties and a busy Tim Hortons entrepreneur, manage a large herd of cattle. And our nephew, Tim, an engineer, who designed something in a car for the New York subway system, and has his name somewhere engraved in the car itself. His wife describes being married to him as like being married to a secret agent because she isn't really ever sure what he is working on and where they will go on a holiday to see a piece of his workmanship. The foregoing is a example of massive Auntie-Bragging I know. Thank you for giving me the opportunity! ~Cynthia

Yanglish on December 29, 2016:

Fantastic collection of quotes.

Geri McClymont on December 29, 2015:

I absolutely love this article and the quotes. My favorite is "Aunts are always offering cake..." I have an aunt I am very close to (she does not have any children of her own and I treasure our relationship) and think she will enjoy some of these quotes so I will share... Thank you also for highlighting how valuable aunts can be in the lives of their nephews and nieces. I think this is somewhat overlooked at times in our society.

Kristen Howe from Northeast Ohio on May 10, 2015:

This was a real lovely and beautiful hub about quotes about aunts. I miss my aunt, since she passed away eight years ago. You've done your research on this hub. Voted up for beautiful!

AJ from Australia on April 08, 2015:

These are beautiful quotes complemented by beautiful photographs. I always find Oscar Wilde entertaining on any subject.

Lovely article. Thank you so much for sharing this. Inspiring.

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on November 27, 2014:

@Elsie, that is so great! It's neat when we can see something commonplace in a new light. I am glad I could remind you. Have a wonderful evening, and thanks for coming by!

Vivian Sudhir from Madurai, India on October 17, 2014:

Indeed aunts are indispensable though some maybe hardly out of their teens. Voted up and shared. Great going prairieprincess.

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on October 13, 2014:

@Sharkeye, I was that single aunt for many years, too. It actually took some adjustment to realize that my husband had to come first and I couldn't just go whenever I felt like it. But then, they really like their new uncle, too.

Thanks so much for your comment, and have a wonderful day!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on September 24, 2014:

@Marion, thanks so much for your comment, and I do apologize for not getting back to you sooner.

Your aunt sounds like a great lady. It's funny that I loved being an aunt when I was single, too, because it was my life, in many ways. I did eventually get married, though, and still take my auntie duties very seriously. Thanks again for the comment and take care!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on September 24, 2014:

@Dana, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful story! It is wonderful that you were given that time with your aunt, your second mother, and were able to really say good-bye. Take care!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on September 24, 2014:

@oldiesmusic, thanks so much for your comment. I am glad you were inspired to think of your aunt, and your own niece. Take care, and I do apologize for taking soooo long to get back to you. I have been behind in comments, and am now catching up.

Elsie Hagley from New Zealand on September 15, 2014:

Very true Aunts are loved by their niece sand nephews, it is a subject I have never thought of writing about, but after reading this hub, I realize how my own speak to me, but I have never thought about it until now. Thanks for reminding me.

Jayme Kinsey from Oklahoma on September 11, 2014:

This is so cute! I have one sister who claims she never wants to have children of her own, because she wants to be the Aunt who spoils everyone else's children. :) I had one of those aunts too, and they can be great fun.

Dana Tate from LOS ANGELES on June 18, 2014:

Prairieprincess: I am a proud aunt of three beautiful children. But I would like to comment on an aunt I lost last year to heart disease. The last year of her life I was her care-taker and I cherish the time we had together. My own mother passed when I was 17 and she took on that role of being another parent. I believe I was given the privilege to have that last year with her because feeling like I had lost a second mother would have been devastating to me. I got my chance to say good-bye which is something I didn't get to do with my own mother and I will forever miss her. Thank you for this beautiful and touching hub.

oldiesmusic from United States on October 07, 2013:

Touching hub. I too have had a close relationship with my maternal aunt, and now I'm also a doting aunt to my only niece. Thanks for these wonderful quotes. :)

marion langley from The Study on June 19, 2013:

My favorite aunt was actually my father's cousin. True to tradition she was also my mother's very best friend. She was a refreshing change of insight and preference from the folks at home and I always felt her love for me. Her willingness to pay respect to my infantile emotions will scaffold my dreams forever. May she rest in peace. An interesting tip she shared with me i've found to be true...the best aunts are single...married and dating women are too busy to do it justice...too busy flirting or nursing to jump on a plane to cross the country for graduation day.

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on April 21, 2013:

@Pinkchic, so nice to meet another auntie! Thanks for the comment.

@Vibesites, thanks for the comment, and great to be a fellow loving aunt!

@Julianne, thank you so much for the comment! It's an article I've had on my mind for a while, and am glad to get it written. Take care!

@Deborah, thank you so much for your kind comment. I am sorry about your aunts. We never lose that love, no matter how long it's been. Take care!

Deborah Brooks Langford from Brownsville,TX on April 17, 2013:

I have a couple of aunts that I dearly love.. .. I miss them .. they are gone to heaven.. I love your hub..

Julianne from Dallas, TX on April 15, 2013:

Wow, what an interesting article! Definitely one of the more unique one's I've come across.

vibesites from United States on April 15, 2013:

I didn't know that there are also quotes about aunts. I'm also a loving aunt to my kid nieces, and this hub seems to hit right on the spot. Thanks for sharing! :)

Sarah Carlsley from Minnesota on April 11, 2013:

Being an aunt, I had to check out this hub. Beautiful!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on March 24, 2013:

Schoolgirlforreal, I am so glad that the hub showed you the importance of your role. We really do play an essential part of our nieces and nephew's lives. Like you, I am an aunt, but not a Mom. Thanks so much for reading and commenting. Take care and have a good week!

schoolgirlforreal on March 17, 2013:

This is very cool because I am an aunt 8 times and not a mother, so the perspective you showed made me feel more special and important in their lives and to remind me to take more of a role. Up and useful, thanks

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on March 17, 2013:

Tattu ... thank you so much for your kind comment! I love that quote, too, and included in my other hub on aunties. We are a devoted group, aren't we? Take care!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on February 27, 2013:

@Aethel, wasn't that a great "mission statement" for an aunt? I thought she said it very well, too. Thanks SO much for the read and the comment. Take care!

@Hey Aunt Vicki, I am sure you the coolest aunt ever! That is so awesome that you have done so many things with them, and I am sure you will always be a special part of their life. Thanks for the comment and read. Hope you are having a good month!

@TorriLynn, thank you so much for your warm and caring comment. I appreciate it so much. Have a wonderful evening!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on February 27, 2013:

@Angela, that is great to hear that you had such special aunts that were such an important part of your childhood. Yay for aunts! Have a good night!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on February 27, 2013:

@Bumpymom, I am so glad that the hub resonated with you, and reminded you of your dear Aunt Kay. It is so wonderful that our aunts can give us female role models, beside our Mothers, and provide us with more than one female to look up to, and to relate to. Thank you so much for the comment, votes and shares. The comments add to the hub. Take care!

torrilynn on February 25, 2013:

really insighful and beautiful hub that you have written

i love the photos that you have included in it as well

thanks, voted up

Victoria Lynn from Arkansas, USA on February 25, 2013:

Hey, girl! Who would have thought that so many people would look for aunt and niece articles. This is very special to me. I don't have children but have spent a lot of time with my nieces as they have grown up, particularly the older one. I have taken both of them to Home Depot workshops many times over the years, about 13 years for the older one. 17 now, she has been spending a week to three each summer since she was 12, going to work with me as a volunteer until I started working from home. Time with her has been so special. I hope that my will always think of me fondly, always think of me as the cool Aunt Vicki! Love this hub!

aethelthryth from American Southwest on February 25, 2013:

I feel my aunts have been much like Aunt Augusta. I want to be an aunt like Karen Washabau describes.

Angela Blair from Central Texas on February 25, 2013:

I had two aunts and they were hugely important to my childhood -- in fact were very instrumental in my reaching adulthood. This Hub is absolutely delightful and very well written -- thanks! Best/Sis

Bumpsysmum from Cambridgeshire on February 25, 2013:

How lovely, what a great Hub. I had a couple of 'favourite' Aunts who were always coming out with pearls of wisdom. They were the original merry widows.

"As a little girl, I modeled myself after my Aunt Rose, not my Mother. My Aunt Rose, with her bright green high heeled ankle-strapped shoes..."

This would have been my Auntie Kay, a fantastic lady, always smart and well dressed and I would rather be like her than my Mother, she's now sadly passed on but I still try to be like her.

Fun Hub, well done, voted up, beautiful, awesome and interesting.

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on February 24, 2013:

@Faith Reaper, thank but you so much. I am glad to hear you had such a good relationship with your aunts growing. They are important women in our lives. Thanks and God bless you!

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on February 24, 2013:

@Tillson, thank you! You are so right ... aunts are so important. I loved seeing my aunts growing up, and can't imagine life without them. Take care!

Faith Reaper from southern USA on February 24, 2013:

What a lovely hub about aunts. Yes, there seems to be a lack of writing on the subject, even when aunts play such a vital role in families. Such beautiful quotes here.

Voted ++ and sharing

God bless. In His Love, faith Reaper

Mary Craig from New York on February 24, 2013:

Certainly a lovely compilation about a much loved position in any family. Aunts are wonderful...admired, loved and someone we can't live without. Your quotes are great and so very true and to the point.

Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting.

prairieprincess, this is such a moving article, and so unique. I loved the photos that you used. They tell the story so perfectly. Thank you for sharing.

Sharilee Swaity (author) from Canada on February 24, 2013:

Bill, nice to see you! I am doing great, thank you for asking. Yes, I guess the title does sound a bit odd, ha ha! I searched books for these quotes, so they are very unique. I receive a surprisingly amount of traffic of people looking for aunt quotes, so I had wanted to do another compilation, plus I love talking about being an aunt, because I miss my nieces so much. Thanks so much for the comment and take care! By the way, you are super quick!!!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on February 24, 2013:

This is one of the most unique titles I have read. I didn't even know there were quotes about aunts. LOL Some of them are quite beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Sharilee, and I hope this finds you happy and well.
