Motherhood: A Poem about a New Mom

Beautiful surprise of life,

A new gift, a future plan,

Tender lullaby of quiet comfort,

Growing belly, super womb.

First time parent, never being ‘mother’

Gives in to maternal experience

As if born to be a mom

Tiny human, mini you, hold fast

Kiss, cry

Scroll to Continue

Rock, love this baby.

How does motherhood change you? (Explanation of the Poem)

Becoming a mother is an experience unlike any other. Not only do you get that surprise of new life growing inside of you, you also have the opportunity to meet that baby in person on a whole new day. In essence, you become a mother twice: once when you have a baby growing inside and again at the birth of the baby. Both are unique experiences.

When you first discover you are pregnant, you see everything in a new light. Not only are you changing physically, you also change emotionally as well. You treat the baby like a new gift and think of the future he or she might have. You can imagine the baby, softly cocooned inside, sleeping peacefully to the sound of your voice. Your belly grows and grows; how strong the womb must be to stretch as such!

Even though you are new at this, never being a mother before, you know something is changing inside of you; something is going to occur that you have never experienced but instinctively you know what to do. The first pain arrives, and you are filled with joy. The time has come for the baby to be born!

Once in labor, you are encouraged to walk around to progress. You and the baby's father will be happy, so happy you don't know what to say.

Then the time comes to push, and push you will. Those around you will be worried about your pain; you will be worried about the baby. At this point, you will feel everything, and screaming is the only way for you to relieve what you feel.

But then this tiny human is there, this little child that is made from you. You hold on to him, or to her, and just stare at what has been created. You kiss him or her. You cry from joy and from sheer exhaustion.

You rock your new baby back in forth in your arms, elated that the time has come for him or her to be with you. The feelings of love that wash over you take away all of the pain you have experienced.

You have changed again. You are now a mom, the guardian, the protector, the shield of this tiny baby who is dependent on you in the strange new world. Enjoy your new role, Mom.
