I love everything weird and colorful in this world and I try to live a life that will make the world a little better once I'm gone.
Lola for President? No, probably not.
Lola is a name with the connotation of excessively seductive. From theater, to music, to cartoons, Lola seems to be a bit slutty. So, why would I make a page on this topic? Do I have a problem with the name Lola? Has one Lola tainted me against all Lolas?
No. I have no problem with the name Lola. I kind of like it. I don't even know any Lolas. But I do think that Lola evokes the image of a vamp, and I am a little concerned with all the babies being named Lola. Why put that on a kid? I think Lola is more of a name to take on. If your personality is Lola, then use it as your nickname, stage name, pen name. If you NEED to name your kid Lola, make it a middle name - so if their personality is Lola they can use it - if not they can make it 'L'.
Do you really think there will be a President Lola? Secretary of State Lola? etc.

Quick...try to think of "Lola" in a song.
Not hard, huh? That's because it's probably been stuck in your head since you hit this page. Odds are it is one of these three songs:
1) Copacabana - "Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl"
2) Whatever Lola Wants - "Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets And little man, little Lola wants you"
3) Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola - "But Lola smiled and took me by the hand And said dear boy Im gonna make you a man" - (Even if Lola ends up being a man, he was a slutty man. And, why do you think he chose the name Lola?)
Lola Montez: Slutty Lola Pioneer
(February 17, 1821 - January 17, 1861)
Lola Montez was an Irish-born dancer and actress who became famous as an exotic dancer, courtesan and the mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
Historian Michael Cannon says "In September 1855 she performed her erotic Spider Dance at the Theatre Royal in Melbourne, raising her skirts so high that the audience could see she wore no underclothing at all. Next day the Argus thundered that her performance was 'utterly subversive to all ideas of public morality'. Respectable families ceased to attend the theatre, which began to show heavy losses." (Melbourne After the Gold Rush, p.313-4).

MiMi Judging people by their name (something they had no choice in!) is extremely childish. The next time you brand someone by their name before actually getting to KNOW them, stop and think how much of an idiot you're being. And what exactly is your name? If it were Lola, I don't think you would be making this page at all. XXXXXXX
anonymous on January 01, 2012:
It's the name of a slut and a transvestite slut on two very well know popular songs. How do you think your baby Lola will be teased growing up?! By song??
Missmerfaery444 on May 30, 2011:
I suppose I might once have associated Lola with a sexier type of name, but ever since my little girl got into Charlie and Lola I can only visualise Lola's as cute and sweet and adorable! Controversial but fun debate :)
Rhonda Albom from New Zealand on May 15, 2011:
Interesting debate. I think it is most interesting that the Lola's who responded to it are on both sides of the issue.
sorana lm on May 15, 2011:
Your lens did stir up a bit of controversy. Well, it's just another name with some ... interesting history. Nothing wrong with the name but, my first thought when I hear it is, frivolous. I suppose it's better than boring. However, I'm sure that the majority of Lolas are nice decent women.
akumar46 lm on May 14, 2011:
I think of other names but it also a good name.
Squidoo-Freak on March 07, 2010:
I probably wouldn't give the name Lola to my little girl - but I don't have a problem with the name as such. I think it could well have been brought back in to fashion my the very popular childrens books, Charlie and Lola, by Lauren Child
FlynntheCat1 on February 09, 2010:
You don't mention Run, Lola Run! I liked that film :D

@anonymous: Things are as they are perceived. If everyone is saying it a slutty name, that is because they think it is. If everyone thinks a name is slutty, then the name IS slutty.
anonymous on February 07, 2010:
lola is not a slutty name !!! evry 1 is sayin it is it isn't your just beein ott about it !!
Maurice Glaude from Mobile on February 04, 2010:

This is funny. Wow, lots of Lolas responded. I am in the not a name for a baby camp. I guess I grew up singing Lola songs and well you know how they go. Anyhow, love your line - How Lola Can You Go?

I am a 52 year woman named Lola. I was named after my Great Grandmother to whom was a Saint. I love my name, and always have. I am always getting the songs sung to me, I just laugh and go about my business. I always wished that my mother had named me Lola Marie cause I though that was a beautiful name. But she named me Lola Jan, to which her mother called me Jan because she didn't like the name Lola. Oh well, I never liked her much anyway...lol As far as it being a slutty name, I have know a lot of stuts named Molly, so it must not be in the name...Give your baby girl a hug from, and old Lola...Hugs

I have a 2 year old named Lola. At first, I was dead set against naming her Lola. I just did what EVERYONE above has done and catagorized my unborn child. However, every AM for 9 months my son Cooper would sit and eat his cornflakes watching Looney Toons. He would rub my belly and talk to his "sweet little Lola bunny baby sister". Needless to say the name grew on me and now we have Lola Marie. I will say I get super irritated when people say " Ohhhh, she is so cute, what is her name?" I say LOLA and then they start singing either Neil Diamond, or, they say, "ya know, whatever Lola wants Lola gets". My little princess is going to HATE me if she has to listen to that for the rest of her life! However, I have no regrets...heck, I am a Jennifer, BORING!
CleanerLife on September 07, 2008:
You're totally right about the songs, I had the Kinks and Copacabana alternating in my head :)
anonymous on August 29, 2008:
It's a brilliant idea for a lens. I like that it covers every conceivable aspect of Lola. I had no idea it was controversial. I've met very nice people named Lola. I read Lolita too, but didn't think to expand the connotations to everyone named Lola.

My baby daughter is called Lola-Mai and I think it is a beautiful name and lots of people have commented on this fact so its most definitely not slutty !
Piksychick on April 29, 2008:
Nobody does "Whatever Lola Wants..." better than Sarah Vaughn. Whenever I listen to that song I think seductress, not necessarily slut. To me, there is a difference.
Susan from Texas on April 15, 2008:
Umm. My grandmother was named Dolores and I was named (middle name) after her. And everyone called her Lola. I never knew there was anything at all slutty about the name until I was older. And why did they pick on that name? My grandmother was most definitely not slutty!!
LilMizMo on April 09, 2008:
I know a girl who has the name of Lola, she most certainly is not a slut. she is kind and warm hearted. It is not the name which which is slutty or otherwise bad, it is peoples minds and perceptions.
Tony Payne from Southampton, UK on March 11, 2008:
Good idea for a lens and nicely put together. 5 ***** from me.

My daughter was born on the 28th of March this year in Sydney and we named her Lola. We think it is a lyrical sounding name, with great feminine qualities and a little quirky. I laughed when I read the above because her wonderful Grandmother who is eccentric and deliciously feminine is called Lulu!

Hated it as a child, hate it as an adult - but it sure sticks - once called Lola, try changing it and people simply laughed.
KCStargazer on June 26, 2007:
Choreographer Bob Fosse actually told the dancer playing Lola in the original Broadway production to dance "like a fat, spoiled little girl". It wasn't meant to be sexy but, since it was a svelte adult woman dancing, it came off that way. Funny!

Didn't like the name Lola as a child, but as I grew older and sexier, it seems to fit. I wouldn't say Lola is a slutty name, I'd say it's a sexy name. From what I've read and seen above about the name Lola....there's nothing wrong with the name Lola. The name Lola is differentand sexy. I love it

Hey kab! I have a Squidoo lens - Celebrity Baby Names. I was surprised to find that Lola seems to be a popular name right now. Madonna, Kelly Ripa, Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards, and Chris Rock all have daughters named Lola.
