How about injecting values, the smartphone way?

The Smart Way of Teaching Valuable Life Lessons to Your Kids

Imagine being able to teach some valuable life lessons to kids without sounding boring, preachy, and while being absolutely engaging. Does it sound impossible and far-fetched? Well, there are a number of cool ways to actually accomplish that.

It is by using your smartphone. Are you disappointed? After all, the kids already know enough about the phone and they are not going to look up values on google or YouTube. There is a much simpler way. Let me elaborate.

This works well with kids of all ages though it is particularly useful with younger kids who have difficulty grappling with values.

Call your child and show him features

the next time your child feels restless

Meditate the smartphone way

There are times when we feel low and run out of energy just like a phone running out of battery. What do we for fast charging at such times? We put the phone on airplane mode. The phone charges faster and is ready for use.

When we meditate, we go into an airplane mode. We disconnect from the world outside and get deeper into the world inside. We feel calm and relaxed. Just 15 minutes of being in meditation - our own airplane mode and we are ready to meet the challenges of the outside world.

I find this to be the easiest way to introduce and explain meditation to children.

Understanding focus

Kids love to do many things and leave quite a lot halfway. They can be taught easily the power of concentration and the need to concentrate on one activity before moving onto the other. Try using this scenario from the smartphone.

What happens when we have too many apps open.

Two things can happen in such a scenario - one is the phone can hang and secondly it can become very slow. Even when we do multitasking and try to do many things we can become confused and overwhelmed and find we are not able to do anything well.

Power of the Mind

It is a beauty of a topic with the phone as a metaphor. It lends itself to easy visualization.

The smartphone and its features were modeled on the human mind and what even the best smartphone can do is just a fraction of what the human mind is capable of.

Think of any question within the bounds of human experience and google it and it will search for the answer and give you n number of answers in a few seconds.

But would our answers have come without us actively seeking them?

No, though the answers were all there...

Life has much to give and there are no limitations to what you can achieve provided you are ready to actively seek it out and do what needs to be done. Everything is just waiting for your command and your active pursuit of that goal.

Why should I think good?

YouTube will answer that one perfectly. You watch a few videos. YouTube understands you, your likes, and preferences perfectly, and starts throwing other videos of a similar nature. This in a way is a reflection of the Law of Attraction.

YouTube works on the same model as life itself. It is an imitation of life itself.

If you are negative, you attract more and more negativity and you will have no way of knowing that YOU initiated it somewhere, sometime, somehow.

So how do you turn the tide? Start choosing positive starting right now and before you know it, life is changed, for the better.

Life is equally simple and easy. We complicate it with too much emotional drama.

Clutter-free physical and mental space

Why does a phone run out of space?

Too many apps, photos, videos, and maybe also less storage space. And so it is easy to figure out what needs to be done. And don't we all dread it when the phone runs out of space?

With our physical space too, we might have constraints. Ask and kids will supply the answers as to what needs to be done to better manage their space. Kids can see how excessive shopping or unnecessary purchases can clutter the physical space, hamper movement, and isn't the best way to use limited resources. They learn to make better decisions.

What about your mind?

If there are too many thoughts all over the place, it can take up valuable mental space. So clean up your thinking once in a while and remove all that doesn't serve the purpose.

A clean, clear mind is your biggest strength.

Why should I study?

Is a 10-year-old phone useful? No, because it has undergone numerous iterations, huge technological improvements have happened and the software on which the phone runs also gets updated frequently.

Education is the human process of installing updates and getting better. This requires us to both learn and apply what we learn.

So here are a few ideas. And this is just the beginning. I have found this extremely useful in my classes. There are lots more one can do.

Hi Adrienne! Thank you for that encouraging remark. Yes the idea definitely is to teach them in a language they understand easily and if it be the smartphone language, so be it.

Hi Vidyaji, am so glad that my intention resonated with you. They seem to know the phone inside out, so why not put that knowledge to better use. Am so happy to have you here.

Hi sowrabha,

You have given very good ideas for using the smartphone for kids for learning valuable lessons. Children nowadays prefer to be with the phone than play outside, so it can as well be used constructively with the guidance of the parents.

Well explained! Loving the metaphors and how we can use smart phone analogies to explain important life lessons to kids.
