Earthy, Nature-Inspired, Hippie Baby Names
Original and Unique Baby Names
While I'm sure it's not everybody's cup of tea, I for one love those cute, earthy baby names. All the Sarahs, Megans, Michaels, and Pauls get old. You can only hear a name so many times before it becomes anything but "noble" or "dignified" to your ears. I wince at the unoriginality of most babies' names these days: Jacob, Ethan, Ava, and Isabella are all lovely—don’t get me wrong—but does the world really need another kid with these names? Let them have a well deserved rest, please.
Why not give your munchkin a one-of-a-kind name? Below, you'll find many ideas to inspire you.
One word of caution to soon-to-be mums and dads: Beware of the kre8tive spellings; it'll make you cringe down the road. Kaylee, Hallileigh, Ayden, Bryson, Maddysen: Stop. Skin crawl.

Why Choose a Conventional Baby Name?
Hopefully, this list will steer you away from naming your baby something dull and devoid of personality. I don't know about you, but personally I am grateful the name John has been on a steep decline (although John still ranks #27 on the names charts—how unfortunate).
Beware of going in the other direction and choosing the name Maddyson or Ayden. Remember: skin crawl.
Baby Name Combinations: Sweet, Simple, and Sophisticated
Here's a few combinations that I think are cute, simple, and sophisticated at the same time:
- Mitchell Elias
- Mitchell Drew
- Fleur Adelisa
- Indi Sage
- Benji Issac
- Jules Leon
- Joanie Rose
- Joanie Drake
- Bandit Lee
- Jace Landon
- Oshen Bleu (I know, I know, but I love this name!)
- Nova Leigh (I actually prefer Nova Star, but you can imagine the teasing that would go on with a name like that.)
- Naomi Harlow
- Sailor Anne (Reminds me of an outlaw name.)
When choosing an unusual first name (Sailor, Bandit, Nova), it's best to pair it with a strong middle name to give the first name more stability; that's not always the case, though: Oshen Bleu.

I'll be naming my baby "Hunter" if it's a boy and "Rome" if it's a girl. Although I'm reconsidering cause "Sailor" and "Oshen" are really cool for a girl's name as well.
Heather on May 25, 2016:
My boys names are Gabriel and Kale. I love the names Sage, Arrow and Hazel
Micah on April 11, 2016:
I've never met another girl named Micah, and only a couple of boys. This article spelled the name "Micha" which is annoying because the name's existed since biblical times...
Chelsea KK on April 09, 2016:
I work in healthcare and when I saw "Senna" I immediately thought of the laxative lol
I loved a lot of these names though! I am so happy to see Luna on the list. We've decided to name our girls Luna Mae and Eden Rose when they arrive!
Trinity on March 31, 2016:
My name is on here
Candice on November 08, 2015:
You people are soooooo mean to those imaging children
Kalel Lawliet on October 12, 2015:
Haha in the baby name combinations it has the name of Gerard and Lyn-z Way's daughter :)
Jennifer Mugrage from Columbus, Ohio on August 21, 2015:
Thanks for this. I am very conventional, but also a closet hippie. :)
Many of the names on these lists of yours I would never, never use, but others I think are great.
I love the name John because it belongs to a couple of great-grandfathers, but I do agree that being named just "John" strikes me as almost the same as not having a name. :-) So I named one of my kids a double name that includes John (thanks to his Daddy for that idea).
Where did you get the photos, and how did you get the painting effect on them?
You have some intriguing Hubs. I will check out a few others and maybe follow you.

My daughter's name is River Emerald! I love unique names!
Jade on April 03, 2015:
How did August not make the list?!
Jayde on February 05, 2015:
Love this blog!! my daughters are Indiana Storm and Ariah Rose ... Not a fan of the top 100 names :)
HeatherB on January 14, 2015:
Both my daughters are on here! Hollie Jade, and Hazel Brooke... And in expecting my 3rd.. Hadley (which I think should be on here as it means fields of Heather or girl within Heather) We are stuck on a middle name! I love Eve, Rose, Skye... But am just not sure.. But know that I am saving this list to keep going over until we find the perfect one!
greta bach on January 07, 2015:

Mariah Hye on December 31, 2014:

So happy to see Elias on here. It is such a great name!
Sarah R. Reusing (author) from Eastern Shore, Maryland on July 11, 2014:
@Nicki: Lunette is a girl's name meaning moon. You made a really weird connection between the name and menstrual cups.
Nicki on July 10, 2014:
Please take off "Lunette", it is the brand name for a popular menstrual cup. No child would want that. It would be like naming a child "Tampax". Otherwise, great list, just a word to the wise.
Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on June 19, 2014:
I had to check this out since I grew up during the 60s...not surprisingly, I know some people with some of these names. :) Thanks for a look back in time.
DarlinLaauren on June 09, 2014:
These names are absolutely precious! Not a single one that I didn't find to be sweet. Loved Oshyn Bleu and Nova Leigh! Just so unique. In a world full of Kaylee and Bryson names, it's time we got some originality flowing! :)
Leah on May 18, 2014:
Owynn for a girl?? That is twenty thousand times worse than Kaylee or Bryson. At least Kaylee is an actual girl name. The originial spelling of Kaylee is Ceilidh, so I think Kaylee is more practical and easy to pronounce.
Owynn is a boy name with a trashy unique spelling.
Same with Oshyn instead of Ocean!!
Suzie from Carson City on March 26, 2014:
sroo.....LOL...This is a cute hub. "Names," in general have always interested and intrigued me. I do believe names have quite an impact on your image, as well as other aspects of your life.
When I read the title, I realized I had to read this. A friend of mine who is much younger than I am, had a boyfriend (only child) who was born to a young couple in the '70's during the height of hippes and communal living, haight-Ashbury. They named him Karma Genesis.....Yeah...WOW! I know..
Since he's a unique individual, as well as an expert Tattoo Artist, his name turned out to be quite appropriate and LUCKY for him!

My son is Sawyer, and my daughters are Aspen and Hazel - we love that our daughters are nature-based and Sawyer isn't common. I love all of the names you shared! Our philosophy when choosing names is to steer clear of the top 100 ;)
Sarah Carlsley from Minnesota on September 11, 2013:
