Building Snow Animals
Most of us have built at least one snowman in our lifetimes. We start with a small snowball, roll it around in the snow until it grows into a snow boulder and then make two more of varying sizes, stack ‘em, decorate ‘em and voila! We have a snowman.
But there are so many other things that can be made with snow. My kids and I love making snow animals. All you need is snow, water spritzing bottles, twigs, charcoals, and anything that you think would make great decorations.
Two years ago we made a great polar bear out of snow. It was easy. All it takes is imagination and the above supplies. You can make the animals as large or small as you like. Larger animals can be fun to climb on and are sure to attract the neighbors’ attention. Create the shapes using your hands, small shovels, and butter knives or spreaders. It is also fun to create groups of animals, allowing each member of the family to make their own.
Before you start, sketch out your ideas so that everyone has a general idea of what you’re making and how it should look. Be sure that the snow is the good packing type of snow, which basically means that it is not too powdery. Moister, heavier snow is best. If you need to reinforce your animal, you can use the spritzers to spray water onto the exterior. With temperatures below freezing the water will freeze, making the animal firm. Be sure that if you are inserting accents like charcoal eyes or twig whiskers and claws you do so prior to icing your sculpture.
Best of all, this is a great bonding project to do with your kids. Have fun!

No. In Wisconsin we only got a couple inches. The east coast really got pelted though! So glad I'm not living there right now!

We built a giant Snoopy snow dog many years back. It was tons of fun! Looks like you had lots of fun with your animal snow building as well. Did you get much snow from our latest "Nemo" blizzard? Best to you and yours.

Thanks Jennifer. I'm not a huge winter fan either, but you're right. This kind of thing helps us make the best of it. Especially since the kids love it so much!

That's awesome! It looks like fun. I'm not a fan of snow in general but make it look like a cute bear and maybe I can tolerate it better. I bet that takes away the winter blues! Thanks.

We sure did. We actually saw the polar bear idea on some HGTV episode and thought it was so clever. We had a ball!

Thanks. I love doing this kind of stuff with the kids and we're lucky enough to get a lot of snow in Wisconsin that makes this possible. I'm sure you do as well. Thanks for reading!
