What I would do if I won a million dollars. How about you?

Some questions get you thinking about what is possible in life. The question, "If you won a million pounds, what would you do with it?!" is such a question.

If I were to win a million dollars, the first thing I would have to do is just sit on it. I can think of a few hundred things that I would like to buy (right away)! But, to make sure I do not just spend, spend, spend; I would need to let the fact set into my head, that I just won a large sum of money.

While I am just letting the money sit in the bank for those first several weeks, I would make a list of the things I would want, need, and desired. Then I would review that list and make any changes to it that I felt needed changing. If the list was too out of control (meaning that it looked like I wanted to spend the entire million in a few weeks or days), I would tear up the list and start over again. This is why I would sit on the money first.

By the fourth of fifth week, the idea of me having a million dollars would be old news. I would get comfortable with the idea of having that amount of money, which means it is now time to really start looking at spending some of it.

The first thing I would do is to get completely out of debt. That would not take much money at all. Imagine ... no bills.

Next, I would probably move to some place warmer. A million dollars is not enough money to move to Hawaii, but I could easily move to Florida or California. I would donate some of the money to a favorite charity of mine (I have several). After doing the above things, I think I would have only spent about 10% of the million dollars. That means I would have enough money to chase after my real dream. I have plenty of ideas for inventing things, so I would create a small lab/workshop where I could work (part-time) in creating some of my ideas.

The work area that I would create would cost between $20,000 to $35,000 and would require no more room than a large bedroom. In it, I would have two computers, one 3D printer (to test out my designs), and one 3D scanner. It would be awesome. I would spend every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday night, plus some weekends working in it. I still want a life, so I would not lock myself in the work-area; but rather, dedicate some time to accomplish my design goals.

What Would You Do With a Million Dollars?

I would set aside about $50,000 for unexpected expenses; and with the rest of the money, I would probably invest in low interest CDs. I would take a vacation, but nothing to extravagant. I have had the opportunity to visit a number of different countries around the world during my time in the U.S. Navy.

I love traveling and there are a number of things to see in the U.S., so I would also get a new car to take some road adventure vacations from three to five days, to a couple of weeks depending on the location.

Sometimes, it's nice to dream.

My thought for winning any sizable amount of money would be to first purchase a house with about 20-30 acres of land. 1 new (dependable) truck, 1 new car and one new SUV. Nothing fancy as far as vehicles are concerned. after that I would like to help my family ease some of their debt. I would probably quit my current job in favor of something I enjoyed a little more, but I would definitely still work. what ever remaining money I had I would roll into various CD's and Savings accounts, or I would use this money to buy a couple houses that could be used as rental properties to try and get my money to grow itself in a potentially more lucrative way. So for a breakdown.

300,000 house

100,000 tithes

100,000 family

100,000 vehicles

300,000 on 2 150k properties charging about 1,250 a month in rent. with will bring home around 30,600 a year income before insurances and expenses.

100,000 set aside for emergencies and savings.

I'd build a tiny house in the middle of nowhere. I hate big houses and all the waste. I'd travel to Alaska and live there for a year. I'd continue my education path and earn my Doctorate. I'd invest some money in my 12 year old daughter's retirement and not tell her about it. I'd hire someone to clean my tiny house. Not because I'm lazy, because I know people who can't find work. The list could go on, but I think money would change my ability to fulfill some dreams while allowing me to assist others.

If I won a million, 40 000 pounds I would appointed for my brother's studies, 10 000 pounds for small and cozy my wedding. I would like have my own house, and therefore uses 200,000 for a house and furniture. £ 50,000 the therapeutic uses of grandmothers, who is in hospital and in need of heart surgery. I would give for people £ 300,000 who suffer from cancer. £ 200,000 - the preservation of endangered species. Remained 200,000, half of all I would give for poor families, while the other half I would leave for my saving. Not a big money makes me happy, but smiling and healthy people. So how to win a million? And how to get chance to do a little bit good things for the world?

Lady_E, is that how it works to win a few dollars. Maybe I should write another hub about the way people get money. It may rub off on the two of us, and any others who would read the hub.

Elena from London, UK on September 04, 2011:

I dropped by to read this again. You know what they say about the Law of Attraction.... So, by reading it again, I am increasing my chances of attracting that Million Dollars that I will share with you.... as you wrote the Hub. :)

It would be great to win a million dollars. The future belongs to those who believe in the power of their dreams.

Winning a million dollars would be nice. I certainly wouldn't mind. Warren Buffet suggests that if you get 15%-30% each year from investment, you will be sitting pretty.

Knowing that nothing is impossible, I have visualized having a great deal of money. After helping family and paying off debts, I would start a foundation to provide free music lessons for all ages, including seniors. I would love to be instrumental in adding music back into the classrooms. Good and fun hub.

With so many people struggling to find a job, it's nice to fantasize about winning the lottery.

I would change nothing in my life if I won that money. I'd put in a safe long term investment and forget about it and not let it tempt me...

Then I'd hate myself and go and spend it all! Wehey!

prettydarkhorse from US on January 02, 2010:

hehe, you have already think about where the money will be spent.. California or Florida, I like the latter much warmer, I wish you will win, night, Maita

Lady_E - Splitting it over a number of banks is a good idea to remember. Thank you for your kind reply and good advice.

Elena from London, UK on November 24, 2009:

Mmmmh.... Heavenly reading.

As for putting it in the bank - I'd say split it over 3 banks as most of them are winding up these days. I love the fact that you will still work - maybe in a lab/workshop. It keeps your feet on the ground.

Well, if it ever gets too much for you to spend, I'm always here to give a helping hand. :)

wearing well - I agree, and good luck. I hope you do win the lottery.

DaniellaWood - No. I have not visited England ... yet! It is on my list of places to try and visit.

stagnetto - To me, helping family is such an obvious thing to do, that I sometimes do not think of saying it aloud. Right on!

stagnetto on November 23, 2009:

If I won a million pounds I would first pay off all my debts. Second put enough in a savings account for my old age - so that sorts me out. Then give some to my family and friends in need and the rest would go to children in need.

DaniellaWood from England on November 22, 2009:

Wow, this is a very well thought through plan! At least we know none of the money would be wasted if you won a million pounds! Have you ever visited England? I live in North Yorkshire which is a really pretty place - you should visit it on your travels... :)

It is better to have tried to earn it though and make your dreams a reality and to experience true self-worth and success.
