I first heard Amy Winehouse sing for the Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, on the 31st December 2006. Amy performed a cover of Marvin Gaye’s, “I heard it through the Grapevine”, with Jools Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, with Paul Weller. It was a sensational performance and I knew that she would make her mark in music.

Amy Jade Winehouse was an English singer and songwriter, born on the 14th of September 1983 and she passed away on 23rd July 2011. Amy was known for her deep contralto vocals, her soulful voice, and a musical mix of genres from jazz, rhythm, blues, and soul.

Amy won the Ivor Novelo Award, for a best contemporary song from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, for her song, “Stronger than Me”. Amy Winehouse became an international success with her follow-up album, “Back to Black”, which was one of the bestselling albums in UK history. At the 2007 Brit Awards, her album was nominated for British Album of the Year.

At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, Amy Winehouse won 5 awards and made a record for being the first British woman performer to receive five awards in one night. Amy died of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27 on the 23rd of July 2011. Amy was always troubled with alcohol and drug addiction, which eventually took her life. Amy Winehouse ranked 26th on the VH1 list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music. Amy’s last stage performance was at Camden’s Roundhouse on the 20th of July 2011. This was a surprise performance to support her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, who was singing “Mama Said”, with the group “Wanted”. Amy died three days later.

The world has lost this great talent and there will never be another music artist like Amy Winehouse, who changed the face of music and made history in a short amount of time.
