Top Ten Song Picks for High School Graduation

Today's graduates are entering a challenging time, and the songs of their youth will stay with them for a lifetime. Here are my top ten graduation songs picks using songs from their era. The songs are not in any certain order, as each one contains an equal dose of inspiration in a relevent message for today's graduates. One or all would be perfect for a graduation ceremony or celebration.

Hilo High Class of '08 singing "My Wish"

Graduation Song Pick #1

Rascal Flatts - "My Wish"

This is an anthem-type song from adult to youth: wishing for a prosperous life for them, hoping they make smart choices while keeping their dreams alive through optimism. It provides reassurance that they will always be loved, and to never forget where they came from.

Mandy Moore - "Extraordinary"

Graduation Song #2

Mandy Moore - "Extraordinary"

This song is as extraordinary as the title. It gives the youthful listener the green light to take the power that is in their hands right now to become a unique person in this world of unlimited potential.

Jessica Andrews - "Who I Am"

Graduation Song Pick #3

Jessica Andrews - "Who I am"

A youthful soul sings of being happy with themselves, recognizing that their fabric is woven from the threads of their upbringing. It reminds us all that knowing and staying true to who you are as an individual is the first step to becoming a contributing part of this world.

Dixie Chicks - "Wide Open Spaces"

Graduation Song Pick #4

Dixie Chicks - "Wide Open Spaces"

This song has been dedicated many times to the young listeners by the Dixie Chicks during performances. It compares building one's life and all its complexities, with a journey into a vast territory with wide, open spaces. It reminds listeners that the future will be filled with new faces and places, but also plenty of room to make mistakes as they grow intellectually and emotionally.

Taylor Swift "A Place in This World"

Graduation Song Pick #5

Taylor Swift - "A Place in This World"

This song is a touching reminder to the important people in their lives, that a young adult may not be sure what they want, as they are still learning, growing, and discovering. It acknowledges mistakes will be made, but asks for us to have as much confidence in them as they do in themselves.

Natasha Bedingfield "Unwritten"

Graduation Song Pick #6

Natasha Bedingfield - "Unwritten"

A wonderful reminder that the path to "maturity" is a continuing journey. We can't help but nod in acceptance of the line, "The pen's in my hand, ending unplanned", because having traveled down our own road a few miles, we know how we have created our own fate.

Vitamin C - "Graduation Song"

Graduation Song Pick #7

Vitamin C - "Graduation Song" (Friends Forever)

High School Musical took us back to high school before graduation, and this song is a tribute to it.

LeeAnn Womack's "I Hope You Dance"

Graduation Song Pick #8

LeeAnn Womack - "I Hope You Dance"

This song is pretty much a standard for graduation by now, but deserves being on the list every year. It draws the comparison of dance to engaging in life. It recommends striking a balance between cautious maturity with youthful energy. It reminds all of us that sitting out is not an option, and that we should all dance!

Jordin Sparks "One Step at a Time"

Graduation Song Pick #9

Jordin Sparks - "One Step at a Time"

Advice about being patient in life, and to realize that dreams are not always in easy reach but worth that continuing stretch.

Britney Boone performing "Whenever You Remember"

Graduation Song Pick #10

Carrie Underwood - "Whenever You Remember"

A song about friends remembering the value of their friendship, and how much it will mean to them as they move on with their lives.

The Standard Graduation Songs

In addition to my ten picks are the obvious standard songs, used often for graduations. I would bet that you have all heard "The River" by Garth Brooks, Queen's "We are the Champions" and "We Will Rock You", or "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang" at some recent graduation.

No matter which song(s) you pick for this year's graduation event, the healthy message for today's graduate is a combination of hope and optimism leveled by the expectation of challenge. Add your acceptance and heartfelt love to the mix, and your graduate will go far in their lifetime!

I LOVE "The Graduation Song" by Vitamin C. This is what we played during my graduation party in 2000. Along with the song, "Butterfly Kisses" at our (my twin sis and I) graduation party for the family.
