There are dozens of beautiful dresses in anime. Characters wear these gowns for all sort of reasons such as attending opera, magic spells, parties, or just everyday garb.
This page is a list of the Top Ten Prettiest Gowns in anime. The dresses were ranked how they reflected the character/anime, memorability and of course aesthetic.
Feel free to disagree with me as personal opinion can get in the way.

Juliet Fiammata Arst de Capulet from Romeo x Juliet
The anime version of Romeo and Juliet, reimagines Verona as medieval fantasy world complete with flying horse and impressive tree. It does go a tiny bit off the rails for the original play but the feud and the star-cross lovers are still at the forefront.
Juliet has been in hiding for most of her life as the Capulet were ousted from power by the Montagues. To keep her protected from discovery she has been raised as a boy.
So in the first episode where she dons a gown for the first time it’s her first time ever being feminine and she likes the feeling.
The dress that she wears has a traditional princess vibe to it. It shades of pink and red with white; the capulet colors. The neckline has a high collar with a green jeweled necklace. The poet sleeves have a puffed detailed at the shoulders. It has a gathered overlay and a ruffled hemline. The skirt is a wide ballgown.
The effect of this gown is very feminine, pretty and romantic which is perfect since she is wearing this gown when she meets her Romeo.
Belldandy from Oh, My Goddess
A considerably older anime Oh My Goddess, is a magical girlfriend show akin to the 60's sitcom Betwitched. But instead of a witch the lead character gets a Goddess named Belldandy.
The main costume that Belldandy wears is airy, flattering and very pretty. It’s has blue over-layer with a gold triangle trim and jeweled closure.
The under-layer is white. The contrast of the more structure overlay and the soft, diaphanous under-layer is very nice.
Vivi Nefertari from One Piece
Vivi Nefertari is the princess of Arabasta in One Piece.
She wears the outfit at the end of Arabasta Arc. Arabasta is a desert paradise kingdom that was inspired by India but it does have influnces from Ancient Egypt and the Middle East.
Vivi Nefertari's royal attire consists of a white a-line gown with a pink tassel cloak. At her waist she wears an intricate gold metal belt-like piece. She also has corded belt worn lower along her hips which looks like the cloak is tied. She wears gold and red jewelry with this looks.
The overall look is very regal and feminine.
Raynesia El-Arte Cowen from Log Horizon
Raynesia El-Arte Cowen is the member of a high-ranking family. She comes off as the very "princess-like" character type but that is not what she is truly like. She is careful and lazy.
Despite her preference to wear comfortable clothing she wears this pink gown, which just screams anime fantasy princess. It's a ball gown in shades of pinks. The layers of this gown look very soft almost like a flower petal.
The sleeves are long and bell shape. There is a unique wrapped like elements around the upper sleeves that goes around the back where there looks like a bow.
This gown is a rare combination of over-the-top and very light and ethereal.
Yuuko Ichihara from xxxholic/Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles
Yuuko Ichihara is a very intriguing character. She was the first character CLAMP created to serve the function of knowing about the multi-verse. She is called the Dimensional witch in Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles where is not a main chavater but is xxxholic. Both of these works started at the around the same time, with each getting their first chapter published in 2003. So it possible for many people they were first introduced to Yuuko in Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles wearing this outfit which is her most recognizable.
This outfit of Yuuko excludes a cool yet imposing figure. It's black with an empire waistline. There are some strong shoulder elements which add to her powerful persona. The sleeves long and a kimono-esque flair that furthers adds to the drama.
The look is completed with a black crescent moon necklace worn across her chest.
The entirety of Yuuko's design is very much in keeping with CLAMP's aesthetic. One look at this character and you understand that she cool, powerful, mysterious and not to be trifled with.
Beatrice from Umineko When They Cry
Beatrice from Umineko When They Cry is the Golden Witch who very much sets the plot in moment.
Beatrice comes off as very cruel and is consider the cruelest of witches. This however is not the full picture as it revealed that she has a childish side and was called naive by her teachers. Oddly enough her outfit suits this contradiction of her personality.
The main colors of her outfit do change from brown to black but in the anime the dress is mostly brown. The dress itself has a Victorian style to it, possibility middle Victorian maybe around the 1850s as it has a large skirt but not a wide as the 1860s with crinoline.
The underskirt has a gathered pick-ups which adds a sense grandeur.
There is an overlay that while has scalloped edges the gold design is very sharp looking, it looks like fire.
The sleeves has a double puff at the shoulder with a white ruffle cuff. There is also a matching white ruffle at the neckline with a pink bow.
There is a lot of soft elements to this outfit which are offset but the sharpness of the skirt details and the heavy colors, all which compliments Beatrice's personality.
Charlotte from Vampire Hunter D; Bloodlust
Charlotte in Vampire Hunter D; Bloodlust wears a white gown with gold accents.
It has an off-shoulder neckline trimmed in gold. The bodice looks quite tight, Her long sleeve that have a puff and the same gold accents as the rest of the dress.The skirt appears to have bustle at her hips.
It's very pretty and there is sense of delicateness and strength and suits the gothic aesthetic of the movie.
Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop
Faye Valentine wears this dark blue gown in episode 15 of Cowboy Bebop.
This evening gown has very femme fatale vibe.
It’s a mermaid silhouette evening gown that has an ankle length hemline. The fabric appears to have a sheen. There is a sheer blue under-layer.
The strapless neckline has a slight slit.
She completes the look with matching opera gloves and a simple choker.
It’s very alluring evening gown.
Haydée Tebelin from Gankutsuou; The Count of Monte Cristo
Gankutsuou; The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the most beautiful anime ever, so when Haydée goes to the opera her gown is a show stopper.
It's white but it has a rainbow-like luminosity. It's adorned with gems of various colors and sizes. Her gown is meant to look like a diamond.
The hem is shorter in the front and long is the back almost like a robe.
The sleeves are long and diaphanous. She competes the look with matching earring and a large green pendant.
The overall look to Haydée's opera gown is like a radiant gentle goddess.
Princess Serenity from Sailor Moon
Princess Serenity from Sailor Moon is the hallmark princess gown in anime.
It’s strapless but has detached puff sleeves. It has empire waistline and is gold circle and beading.
The dress two layers of flowing fabric that give it an ethereal quality.
Sailor Moon creator, Naoko Takeuchi, was inspired by the current high fashion at the time for many of her designs in Sailor Moon. Princess Serenity's design was inspired by a spring summer 1992 Christian Dior evening gown. The itself is called "The Palladium Dress." The overall look of this dress looks like an ionic column.
