My Favorite Sunday School Songs

I loved going to Sunday School and I especially enjoyed the Sunday School Songs we sang.

I grew up in the small historic town of Pendleton, South Carolina attending Pendleton Presbyterian Church back in the 1950s and 1960s. Our teacher was Mrs. Frances Martin and she made our class so much fun as well as educational.

I remember the Sword Drills among other things. Mrs. Frances would divide the class into two groups and ask us Bible questions. Most of the questions had to do with the Old Testament stories. She also taught us many Sunday School Songs that I still love to sing today even though I am not blessed with a great singing voice. Do you remember your Sunday School teacher? Sunday School teachers are in a wonderful position to make memories for a child to cherish the rest of their lives. I am sure proof of that.

These songs bring me such a comforting, safe feeling. I hope we are giving our youth today some songs to hold on to and enjoy for the rest of their lives. The lyrics that I have added here are mostly from memory or from my sister's little green book. You might know different lyrics as some of the songs vary. I have posted a great link to a site that list most of the Sunday School Songs and their lyrics. We usually sang these songs with hand motions so if you do not know the motions, just make them up. It makes it more fun! It would also be meaningful to teach the children the sign language for each of the songs.

After my husband and I married, we joined the Pendleton United Methodist Church and I enjoy the Children's Ministries and their love of music. I still enjoy my Sunday School Class and don't think you ever get too old to get a lot out of Sunday School. I know there are some nice new songs that are sung by Sunday Schools but to me, these are special and I hope they will be around for a long, long time.

I have so many fond memories of this church and it will always be very special to me. I loved going to Sunday School and singing these old Sunday School Songs and learning about the Bible. Even though we are now active members at Pendleton United Methodist Church, this church will always have a special place in my heart. My parents and brother are buried in the cemetery here and even though we are active down the street at the Methodist Church, a part of me will always be at the Pendleton Presbyterian Church.. My husband and I were married in this church in 1978.

225th Anniversary of Pendleton Presbyterian Church: The big event was October 12, 2014 with Barbecue after the service. On June 8, 2014, Pendleton Presbyterian had a special service and reception for all those who were married in this church. If you were a teenager at the church, I hope you made it to reunion on July 27. My husband and I were married in this church and we really enjoyed the service on June 8. Since my sisters and I all grew up in that church, they can as did some very old friends on July 27, too. We sure had a great time seeing some of our old PYFers. It was so such fun!

My Sister's Sunday School Song Book

We still enjoy getting together and singing these old Sunday School Songs

I have been blessed with a lot of talents but singing was not one of them. This has not prevented me from enjoying music and enjoying singing. It's just that not many people enjoy hearing me.

My sisters and I often sing our old Sunday School Songs remembering those days at Pendleton Presbyterian Church. We also have fond memories of visiting the Presbyterian Church in Ware Shoals, SC. Our grandmother and lots and lots of relatives lived there. Our Aunt Polly taught Sunday School and I loved to go to her class. Aunt Polly owned the kindergarten, "Little Red Schoolhouse" in Ware Shoals and was quite a character. I can just hear her singing "Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain". We also sang many of these songs at Camp Grier which is where the church children went to camp for a week every summer. Of course, we sang lots of fun camp songs, too!

In 1980, my sister Betty compiled a little book titled "My Sunday School Song Book". I still have my copy and refer to it quite often. Betty made this book before we had personal computers so I imagine it was done on her old Royal Typewriter with carbon copies. Thank you Betty for years of enjoyment of your little book. I have used it when I was teaching Sunday School and refer back to it often now with my grandson.

One of these days I am going to surprise my sisters with a new copy of this book. It is such a joy and getting hard to read the words to these old Sunday School Songs. I really need to do that soon. I would hate to lose the words to some of our favorite Sunday School Songs. My other sister put together a big book of all the songs we loved to sing including old camp songs and old songs that our parents taught us. Both books are treasures, for sure.

Jesus Loves Me

This I Know For The Bible Tells Me So

Jesus loves me, this I know, For the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to Him belong, They are weak but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me,

Yes, Jesus loves me, for The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me, He who died, Heaven's gates to open wide,

He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in.

Jesus loves me, loves me still, Though I'm very weak and ill,

From His shining throne on high, Comes to watch me where I lie.

Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain - Heavenly Breezes Blow

I love this song. It makes me so happy and these children do a wonderful job of singing it. I can just hear my Aunt Polly leading this one. She would get so excited and dance around while singing. When she would sing the part about "the heavenly breezes blow", she would swoop her hands back and forth and I could just feel those heavenly breezes. Whew, talk about making memories. Our Aunt Polly sure did a lot of that for us and I have tried to do the same thing. I just hope and pray that our children and grandchildren will cherish their memories as much as I do.

Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain

You and I

Climb, climb up sunshine mountain,

Heavenly breezes blow.

Climb, climb up sunshine mountain,

Faces all aglow.

Turn, turn from sin and doubting,

Look into the sky.

Climb, climb up sunshine mountain,

You and I.

Praise Him, Praise Him - All Ye Little Children - God Is Love - God is Love

Praise Him Praise Him

All Ye Little Children, God Is Love, God is Love

Praise Him, praise Him

All ye little children,

God is love, God is love.

Praise Him, praise Him

All ye little children,

God is love, God is love.

(Serve Him, Love Him)

He's Got The Whole World In His Hands - He's got you and me brother in his hands!

Do you remember this one? I sure do!

Enjoy singing along with the Cedarmont Kids!

He's Got The Whole World In His Hands

He's got the whole world in His hands, He's got the whole wide world in His hands,

He's got the whole world in His hands, He's got the whole world in His hands!

He's got the itty, bitty, baby in His hands

He's got the whole world in His hands

He's got momma and papa

He's got the whole world in His hands

He's got you and me, sister, in His hands

He's got the whole world in His hands

Jesus Loves The Little Children of the World - All the children of the world

Jesus Loves The Little Children

All the children of the world

Jesus loves the little children

All the children of the world; Red and yellow, black and white,

They are precious in his sight; Jesus loves the little children of the world.

B-I-B-L-E - Yes, that's the book for me!

The B-i-b-l-e

The B-I-B-L-E

Yes, that's the book for me

It stands alone on the word of God

The B-I-B-L-E

Lensmaster Mr. Jeremy provided the words to another verse:

The B-I-B-L-E

That's the book for me.

I read and pray and then obey

The B-I-B-L-E

Zaccheus

was a wee little man and a wee little man was he

Zacchaeus was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he.

He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see.

And as the Savior passed him by, He looked up in the tree,

And he said, "Zacchaeus, you come down from there;

For I'm going to your house today, for I'm going to your house today"

Zacchaeus came down from that tree, as happy as he could be,

He gave his money to the poor, and said: "What a better man I'll be."

Note: The story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector, can be found in the New Testament Luke 19:1-10. The animated video below tells the story of Zacchaeus.

Video of the Story of Zacchaeus

I remember acting out this story in Sunday School as a child and singing the song. I especially remember the thrill of being able to answer the question in the Sword Drills about who the rich tax collector who asked for forgiveness and was told by Jesus that he was saved and would go to Heaven.

Be Careful Little Eyes, What You See

There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,

Oh, be careful little eyes, what you see.

Oh, be careful little eyes, what you see.

There's a Father up above, looking down in tender love,

So be careful little eyes, what you see.

Be careful little ears what you hear

Be careful little mouth what you say...

Be careful little hands, what you touch...

Be careful little feet, where you go...

If You're Happy And You Know It

Clap Your Hands!

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands,

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands,

If you're happy and you know it, then your life will surely show it,

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands!

If you're happy and you know it, stomp your feet...

If you're happy and you know it, shake your head...

If you're happy and you know it, turn around...

If you're happy and you know it, touch your toes...

I've Got The Joy, Joy, Joy Down In My Heart

I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart, (where?)

down in my heart, (where?), down in my heart,

I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart, (where?) down in my heart to stay.

Chorus:

And I'm so happy, so very happy. I've got the love of Jesus in my heart. And I'm so happy, so very happy. I've got the love of Jesus in my heart

Additional Verses:

I've got the peace that passes understanding down in my heart

I've got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus, down in my heart

I've got the wonderful love of my blessed redeemer way down in the depths of my heart

Go Tell It On The Mountain

Our Jesus Christ is born.

Go tell it on the mountain,

Over the hills and everywhere,

Go tell it on the mountain,

Our Jesus Christ is born.

When I was a seeker I sought both night and day, I asked the Lord to help me, And he showed me the way.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, Our Jesus Christ is born.

He made me a watchman Upon a city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least of all.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, Our Jesus Christ is born.

Do Lord

oh do remember me

I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun (HALLELUJAH!)

I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun (HALLELUJAH!)

I've got a home in glory land that outshines the sun-way beyond the blue

Chrous:

Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me.r> Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me.

Do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me-way beyond the blue.

Additional Verse:

I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too.

I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too.

I took Jesus as my Savior, You take Him too,

Yes He's Calling you.

Sunday School Medley - A Sunbeam, A Sunbeam

I had almost forgotten about "Sunbeam" and that was always one of my favorites.

A Sunbeam

Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam

1. Jesus wants me for a sunbeam,

To shine for Him each day;

In every way try to please Him,

At home, at school, at play.

* Refrain:

A sunbeam, a sunbeam,

Jesus wants me for a sunbeam;

A sunbeam, a sunbeam,

I’ll be a sunbeam for Him.

2. Jesus wants me to be loving,

And kind to all I see;

Showing how pleasant and happy,

His little one can be.

3. I will ask Jesus to help me

To keep my heart from sin;

Ever reflecting His goodness,

And always shine for Him.

4. I’ll be a sunbeam for Jesus,

I can if I but try;

Serving Him moment by moment,

Then live for Him on high.

Whisper A Prayer Lyrics

These are the lyrics I found in my sister's book

Whisper a Prayer in the Morning

Whisper a Prayer at Noon

Whisper a Prayer in the Evening

To Keep your heart in tune.

God answers Prayers in the Morning

God answers Prayers at noon

God answers Prayers in the Evening

To keep your heart in tune.

A Wise Man Built His House Upon A Rock

The Wise Man Built His House Upon The Rock

And The Rain Came Tumbling Down

The Wise Man Built His House

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

The wise man built his house upon the rock

And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

And the wise man's house stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

The foolish man built his house upon the sand

And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

The rain came down

And the floods came up

And the foolish man's house went "splat!" [clap hands once]

So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ

And the blessings will come down

Oh, the blessings come down

As your prayers go up

The blessings come down

As your prayers go up

The blessings come down

As your prayer go up

So build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Climbing Jacobs Ladder by Anne Murray - The Jacobs Ladder Song

In The Temple

by request

Someone visiting this lens was looking for the words to "In The Temple". My sisters and I asked everyone we knew for help in finding this and finally one of Joan's friends came through for us. Hope this helps.

In the temple, in the temple Stood a happy boy one day,

And the doctors wondered greatly at the words they heard Him say.

It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.

And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.

It was Jesus who was teaching and they listened to His word,

As He told them of His mission from the great and mighty Lord.

It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.

And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.

Let us ever then be eager to sit down at Jesus' feet

To be learning from our Saviour, and His lessons to repeat.

It was Jesus! It was Jesus! Standing in the temple there.

And the light of heav'n was shining in His face so pure and fair.

I loved Sunday school only because it made me realise - through the teacher being unable to answer my searching questions to my satisfaction - that the whole religion thing was a put-up job. Needless to say I got myself barred from further attendance, but I am certain I missed nothing of importance!

@BibleVersesToSh: Thank you for visiting and I am so glad you enjoyed remembering these great Sunday School Songs.

BibleVersesToSh on August 28, 2012:

It's amazing how songs we learned decades ago can come back verbatim ... and still mean so much to adults as to kids. Thanks for the reminders!

Dancing Cowgirl Design from Texas on August 28, 2012:

Just a joy to see the songs that I remember so well. Great Job sharing these with everyone!

This brought back lots of memories. One of my favorite songs was "This Little Light of Mine." We sang a verse you didn't show (as you said, many variations!) "All around the neighborhood, I'm going to let it shine..." Thanks for sharing this lens and I love your photos!

Melissa Miotke from Arizona on August 13, 2012:

Great songs. I like taking a lot of these and customizing them to be about my children when I sing to them like I have my whole world in my arms when I'm holding them:)

Thank you for your page. I am now a teacher in a primary school and I teach the children the church songs. Relying on memory I seem to have added a line to 'Our Sunday school is over' - 'Good-bye, good-bye, remember God loves you'. As we are not in church we sing 'Our time in school is over'

anonymous on June 22, 2012:

He's got the whole world in his hands--sang that at a church dinner once--either forgot my guitar or a string broke..so I accompanied myself on a broom...I also love the church camp songs.

UKGhostwriter on June 17, 2012:

One of the things I remember about Sunday school was a stamp album that was a record of attending. The stamps related to the story or lesson and were stunningly beautilful, like ancient illuminated text with Illustrations. They were about 2" square.

Great lens! You might enjoy my lens on Bible verses set to music: https://hubpages.com/religion-philosophy/bible-ver . My favorite DVD of children's songs in Steve Green's "Hide 'em in Your Heart." They're Bible verses set to music that children will love. You can also find it on YouTube. Blessed and liked.

just coming back to share some blessings.

Margaret Schaut from Detroit on February 29, 2012:

There is a long tradition among us Catholics that 'he who sings prays twice' and all of these songs are a double duty prayer to the Living God and to Jesus. Children LOVE them, and can sing their hearts out to the Lord, which of course, He dearly loves.
