Pros And Cons Of Watching TV Alone

Television is an enjoyable way to relax for many people. Unwind after a hard day at work by picking up the remote control and sitting back on the couch. Television can be viewed alone or with a friend or family member. There are pros and cons to watching TV by yourself.

Do You Watch Television Alone?

Unwind alone after a long day at work.

You control the volume, rather than your friends.

You control the volume, rather than your friends.

The Pros

The pros of viewing television alone include:

After a day spent working in a loud office, you may desire quiet time where the only sound that fills your ears is the sound coming from the television set. You control the sound through the television remote when you watch it alone.

Perhaps you have a headache. The only sound you desire is a lowered volume of the television as a way to ground yourself and give your eyes something on which to focus.

You may not want to be rude to your roommates by asking them to lower their voices, even though the you desire a relatively quiet environment that day.

Having other people around may intensify your headache and make you agitated. These worries are eliminated when you view TV alone.

Hear That?

The value of hearing all of the words being said on television can not be discounted in this pros and cons debate.

When you watch TV with other people, they may talk during the show. Perhaps they cough just at the moment the twist in the plot is revealed, or sneeze during your favourite moment in a re-run. You might miss hearing crucial dialogue due to the vocal interruptions. These issues do not occur when you watch television alone.

Be Comfortable

Viewing television alone is also a time to sit in the exact position you desire on the couch or on a chair. Lay out on the couch or sit with your legs curled up on the chair; a definite pro in the debate.

You have no reason to worry about your brother asking you to take your feet off the couch, as there is no one there but you and you alone. You also do not have to squeeze yourself over to the side of the couch to make room for somebody else to sit beside you.

You have the entire area to yourself. You rest comfortably when you sit alone in front of the TV.

Follow Your TV Show Comfortably

Rest how you like when you view TV alone.

No Friends, Just You

Time To Think

Watching television alone is also a great time to nurture yourself.

You do not feel compelled to ask someone else what he or she wants to watch. You do not feel obligated to watch your best friend's show which you secretly find boring.

You have free reign over what you want to watch. You have time with yourself and with your thoughts. You are free to think without interruption.

You are creating time for yourself, which is "Me Time". Now that's a great argument for the pro side!

The Cons

There are also cons to viewing television alone:

While time alone is sometimes desirable, there are also times you likely want company. You may become lonely sitting by yourself on the couch. Even if you do not talk to the person sitting next to you, being in the presence of another person can in itself be reassuring to you. Isolation needs to be balanced with companionship. Loneliness is a con in the argument here.

The Funnies

When you watch a comedy TV show, have you ever laughed out loud while you were sitting alone? You are less likely to laugh out loud if you are alone than if you are with someone else. For example, you may think it is silly to laugh alone.

Perhaps your friend has an unusual laugh or snorts when she giggles. You may start to laugh because of the sound of your friend's laugh or because he or she finds a joke funny. Laughing together is a great way to bond with another person. When you follow a television show together, the bonding may occur.

Television Can Be Boring To Watch Alone

Anther con to watching television alone is that the activity may become boring.

Perhaps there is nothing of interest on TV or there are a lot of reruns that you do not desire watching for the third time.

You may also be wanting to engage with someone in conversation about the TV program you are watching right now.

The commercials appear and you have no one to ask, "Hey, what was the significance of the doll in that last scene?" or "Who do you think pulled the trigger?"

There is not another person to ask for clarification or to chat with about the show. A limitation to watching television alone exists here.

Scared and Alone

No one comforts you when you are alone.

No one comforts you when you are alone.

The Scary Times

Watching TV alone may become a negative experience if you are watching a scary show. Perhaps the gory scenes leave you feeling uneasy and you want someone to hide behind. Perhaps you want a hug or you just want someone to say, "Everything is okay." You want reassurance.

When you sit alone in front of the television screen, there is not someone beside you to calm you down.

You are left to your own thoughts, which may be haunted by the vision of the bloody hand you just saw on your HDTV. Here is a definite con to viewing television on your own.

Pros and Cons

There are pros and cons to watching television alone. While some days you may enjoy sitting with a group of friends, other days may be best suited for viewing the shows on your own. Enjoy your quiet time when it is available and treasure your TV-related conversations with friends. Pop some popcorn as well; you deserve a snack while you relax on the couch.

Do You...

@flashmakeit, good for you! You are reading articles to stimulate your mind and there is always so much to learn. I like to unwind with the TV at night :) Thanks for adding your perspective here.

flashmakeit from usa on July 27, 2012:

I like to be on the internet reading articles when I have the spare time and I only watch TV when someone ask me to watch a TV show with them.

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on June 13, 2012:

@Jools, I hope you find time for watching your DVDs more. Some days do just go by so quickly don't they.

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on June 13, 2012:

@Docmo, thanks for all of your support. You leave great comments and I appreciate them. Take care (and I say both watching TV alone and with others are good - depends on mood!)

Mohan Kumar from UK on June 13, 2012:

I agree with both as the mood takes us. I watched a nice uninterrupted couple of episodes of game of thrones at home the other night. But then I like watching telly with my family too- its nice that way. Great analysis Christy!

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on June 13, 2012:

I usually watch TV with my husband but I love it when I get the house to myself and I can watch a baseball game from start to finish with nobody trying to grab the doofer off me :o), I also like to watch my favourite DVDs when I get a chance, hardly ever.... :o(

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 07, 2012:

Thank-you Tobey, how kind!

tobey100 from Whites Creek, Tennessee on March 07, 2012:

Very enjoyable. Nicely done.

Thanks for the great compliment! It is remarks like yours that motivate me to keep writing :)

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 05, 2012:

Hi Vinaya, thanks for your comment. I like that I have you thinking about a new topic with my writing here. Take care.

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 05, 2012:

How nice that you are able to divide your time comfortably with your husband this way. Cheers to you with the cup of tea!

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 05, 2012:

Hehe what a great comment! I know many channel surfers, regardless of whether it is a commercial break or not. Sighh I feel your pain

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 05, 2012:

Hehe now that's good thinking Patti!

lilMissScrittore on March 05, 2012:

Love this! You take the daily event of a little TV watching and make it something that can be debatable. It is the little things in life, isn't it?

Vinaya Ghimire from Nepal on March 04, 2012:

Your points are very interesting. I have never pondered about this topic, however, I enjoy TV alone.

Dianna Mendez on March 04, 2012:

My husband and I love to watch some shows together. It is especially nice when we watch a movie and enjoy a bag of popcorn together. I do not care to watch some of his sports events and he lets me watch my chick flicks on my own. It's the "comfortable" aspect that you mention that I love: putting my feet up, having a cup of tea, watching in my pj's and that makes for a great relaxing time!

Suzie from Carson City on March 04, 2012:

Let me make something clear upfront here....My husband is sweet and fun to be with and of course I love him.

HOWEVER...he is an incurable channel surfer, he likes to TALK a lot while watching TV...(even talks TO the TV) the shows that he does leave on from start to finish are absolutely nothing I am interested in. AT ALL.

Do I really need to tell you why I might LOVE watching TV alone??

Patti Riggs Hale from Burdette, Arkansas on March 04, 2012:

I like to watch television alone so I can watch what I want!

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 04, 2012:

Yes there are several factors that can influence if you want to watch alone or with another person, including who exactly would be watching with you! hehe. Thanks for the comment.

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 04, 2012:

Thank-you! Yes sometimes watching alone is just more peaceful, isn't it?!

Rastamermaid from Universe on March 04, 2012:

Interesting hub.

Sometimes I like to watch alone and other times I like others to watch with me. It really depends on other factors also, like who's watching with me,type of show, etc.

Good question.

Christina Lornemark from Sweden on March 04, 2012:

Good to know that there are more people than me who like to watch TV alone! The only time I like some company is when I watch thrillers or other scary stories!

Thanks for writing this interesting article! Voted up, interesting!

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 04, 2012:

Oooh Hally I would prefer watching thrillers with friends so they can hug me when I'm scared. Good point that the type of show is another factor to consider here.

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 04, 2012:

Yes Daisy I've watched tv with friends who do much the same thing! Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I'm glad you could relate to some of my points!

Christy Birmingham (author) from British Columbia, Canada on March 04, 2012:

Awe thanks Marc. I know you do not give out compliments freely so this one means a lot to me. Take care.

Marc Babineau from Cornwall, Ontario, The Seaway City on March 04, 2012:

I prefer watching TV alone and movies with friends (at the theatre or the drive-in).

Great new hub! This is more like what I expected to see from you, Christy! Great job!

Daisy Mariposa from Orange County (Southern California) on March 04, 2012:

Thanks for publishing this very interesting Hub. I enjoyed reading it.

I prefer watching television alone, rather than with my boyfriend. When watching a program together, he often mutes the sound to comment upon something we've just seen or heard. I lose the flow of the program that way.

Hally Z. from Madison, Wisconsin on March 03, 2012:

hmm....this certainly depends on what kind of show I'm watching. The Super Bowl, for example, must be watched with friends. Dramas and psychological thrillers, however, I prefer to see alone.
