Alyssa loves curling up on the couch with a hot cup of black coffee to binge watch the best programs on Netflix.

October has officially arrived! Time to pull out your chunky sweaters, go hunting for a pumpkin, and curl up with a cup of delicious apple cider. While summer is my favorite season, I love all the activities that accompany fall.

As the weather gets cooler, one of my favorite things to do is watch seasonal movies and TV shows. Netflix is my go-to, and I love sharing the programs I've found interesting with the world. In this edition of recommendations, I thought it would be fun to get in the spirit of Halloween. Here are my top choices for the season. Let's dive in!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

As someone who grew up in the era of TGIF television, Sabrina the Teenage Witch was one of my all time favorite shows. When Netflix came out with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I had to give it a try. I instantly fell in love! It's a darker take on the tale, based on the Archie comic. Netflix is releasing part 3 later this month, so why not catch up on the first two while you wait? Make sure you cancel your plans for the day because once you start watching, you won't be able to stop. Don't say I didn't warn you.

DreamWorks Spooky Stories

It's a family tradition of ours to settle in and watch these fun shorts. The first three center around Shrek and the last one is a funny story from Monsters vs. Aliens. This is a great choice for the entire family! Once you've watched the first set, keep the fun going with Spooky Stories 2. In the second edition, you get more of the hilarious, gelatinous B.O.B, Megamind, and a curious adventure with the three pigs from Shrek.

This is a cute, animated movie about an inventor who dreams of becoming an evil scientist. I was excited to see it pop up on Netflix and added it to my list, as this is one of my husband's favorites. Grab some popcorn, settle in with the kids, and enjoy a fun and heartwarming tale.

The Vampire Diaries

The late 2000's were full of vampire love stories. After reading and watching the Twilight movies, I was reluctant to hop on The Vampire Diaries bandwagon. At the insistence of a friend, I decided to give it a chance. I spent the remaining years, following along, faithfully tuning in to the CW for every episode. I was sad when Nina Dobrev left the show and the final season was bittersweet. It's always hard to say goodbye to a favorite show. Nowadays, the trend is all about superheros, something I just never got into. In honor of Halloween, relive every dark, magical, heartbreaking, and heartwarming part of The Vampire Diaries. It truly was one of the best programs on television.

The Originals

A Vampire Diaries spin-off, for me, The Originals was even better. I loved following along with the Michaelson's and seeing the war that played out in New Orleans between the witches, the wolves, and the vampires. It was hard to say goodbye to this show as well, and the ending was heartbreaking. This remains one of my all time favorite TV shows, and because Netflix has all the seasons available, I can relive every dark, raw, magical moment. This is the perfect show to get in the spirit of Halloween.

Oh the 80's. It was a different time and the movies from that era are fantastic. This was surprisingly interesting and relatable. Being a teenager can be difficult and navigating the world of high school cliques remains virtually the same, no matter what decade you're in. While it isn't a horror movie or particularly scary, the satire is timeless and the dark comedy makes it perfect for this list. If you haven't seen it, give it a try. If you have, it's definitely worth watching again.

Season of the Witch

The perfect Nicolas Cage movie to get in the Halloween spirit! Set in the time of the crusades when supposed witches were persecuted, this is full of magic, intrigue, and plenty of laughs along the way. Grab some popcorn, turn off the lights, and settle in for a wild ride.

Growing up, R.L. Stine's Goosebumps was one of my favorite book series. I read every one I could get my hands on, and I loved the TV show! Netflix has five seasons of the spooky tales available. Relive your childhood with this fantastic series!

American Horror Story

With the release of American Horror Story 1984 on FX, Netflix now has season 8 available. This has quickly become one of my favorite shows. Each season presents something different, and as the show progresses, the creators tie them together. You can easily catch up to the current season or rewatch your favorites. This is another one that will pull you in and have you hooked. You've been warned.

Gnome Alone

This was a surprisingly interesting animated movie. It's about a girl who moves to a new town, discovers a troupe of gnomes living in her house are alive, and helps them save the world from the glowing troggs. It's a great fun for the whole family.

Yes, Jacqueline! haha! I completely agree!

Vampire Diaries and Originals.... YES!! Didn't like Klaus at first but he became my dark obsession. Grab some friends who are like-minded and binge on both these. Isn't it wonderful to live in the age of home computers and big screens when you can hit "pause" and run to the store for more of the high cholesterol artery-hardening pound-packing guilt wallowing stuff you run out of during fun friend adventures such as these? And don't forget to dress in costume, take the time to turn out all the lights occasionally, and cause your favorite character a blood-curdling scream!

The Dreamworks spooky stories sounds like a lot of fun. We will definitely have to put this on our list as well as Gnome Alone, Igor, and Goosebumps as these movies look like they could all be wonderful entertainment for the entire family. Thanks for this great list of recommendations, Alyssa.

Bev doesn't do scary, so that limits what we can watch at Halloween...although the Gnome Alone looks possible...thanks for that recommendation,my friend.

Trailers and reviews suggest that it is good. I hear Emma Roberts actually gets to live in this season.

Oh wow! Good to know! I didn't think about the variances in Netflix among different countries. I'm sorry to hear you can't watch the other seasons, but I definitely recommend watching AHS 1984 on FX, if you're able. It's really good!

Stanley Johnston on October 02, 2019:

AH hasn't been available on Canadian Netflix for several years now. I enjoyed binged watching the first four seasons. Haven't watched any of the subsequent seasons.
