Four Simple Ways to Express Gratitude

I'm grateful for Mother Earth

I'm grateful for Mother Earth

"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it." William Arthur Ward

Four Simple Ways to Express Gratitude

One can express gratitude in different ways:

  • Go for a walk
  • Take a 'gratitude break' at the workplace. Allow your mind to focus on those things you take for granted: Breathing, seeing, smelling, hearing, feeling.
  • Mentally make a list of three things you are grateful for during a nice warm shower or bath.
  • Say 'thank you more often for showing gratitude.

Please choose one of your favorite places to begin your list, whether it's at the beach, under a shady tree at a nearby park, or a special place in your home. When possible, surround yourself with nature.

If you select the computer, make your list special by creating a word document. I like to place a lovely, peaceful image at the beginning of my list to bring me a deeper sense of gratitude.

This list is your unique creation. You can design it any way you wish. You may prefer to get nice and comfy on the sofa with a lite throw and big soft pillows. With gentle, relaxing music in the background, you are ready to begin your gratitude list.

Gratitude Suggestions

There is much to be thankful for. Even during the darkest of times, we can find something to be grateful for each day.

An Attitude Adjustment

It was one of those weeks where everyday something went wrong. Regardless of how hard I tried to stay positive, I just couldn't seem to find my usual comfort zone. Even meditation, positive affirmations, or a big bowl of ice cream sprinkled with a few sunflower seeds and a dollop of whipped cream, didn't seem to help. I was determined to find a way to bring myself out of this dark place and back into the light.

I remember reading somewhere "change your thinking, change your life". In order to follow such wise counsel, I began to make a list of everything I was grateful for. In no time my attitude began to change.

Five Steps to Physical and Mental Well Being

  1. First, set the mood by filling the room or area with soft, sweet music.
  2. Next, engage in some deep diaphragmatic breathing, focusing on each breath in preparation for releasing gratitude.
  3. Visualizing each blessing, continue to focus on the breath.
  4. Follow with ice-cold purified water. (The ice-cold water keeps the mind alert). If you prefer, hot green tea (peppermint) may be a good choice as well.
  5. The idea is to be comfortable and relaxed. Deep breathing helps to focus and bring more oxygen to the brain.

How Do You Define Your Wealth

I am not rich, but I am wealthy. My wealth is my family, friends, good health, nutritious food and a warm bed. If you are reading this to learn how to become wealthy in terms of material possessions and a huge bank account you won't find it here. But if you'd like to find less stress and more peace in your life you've come to the right place.

Begin with being grateful. This is the first step to enjoying life. When you add daily positive affirmations along with your gratitude list, just watch what happens!

“God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say "thank you?" -William A. Ward

“To educate yourself for the feeling of gratitude means to take nothing for granted, but to always seek out and value the kind that will stand behind the action. Nothing that is done for you is a matter of course. Everything originates in a will for the good, which is directed at you. Train yourself never to put off the word or action for the expression of gratitude.” -Albert Schweitzer

Thanks so much Peg. Your comments are beautiful. When ever I start to complain about my own aches and pains, I stop to think about how blessed I am that I can even feel them. I always find someone else worse of than myself. Glad you liked the video as it is one of my favorites.

Just finished a new hub about "butter beans" and I took 2 of the photos myself and would like you to take a quick look at them. They are not very good, but give me enough time and I will improve :) Thank you.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on November 26, 2011:

Every day is a blessing and you are so right about the things on your list. I'll add to it the ability to walk and to see as two of my friends have difficulty with these seemingly normal functions as they move further into their nineties. We have so much to be thankful for everyday.

I listened to the beautiful vocal you added here from Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Perfect touch while reading this uplifting article.

What a beautiful expression of the wealth you have in your life. We all need to take pause to make our "gratitude list". Sometimes it is right in front of us and until we say it out loud or write it down, we often forget or overlook our blessings. Thanks for sharing, voted up, useful, beautiful and awesome...

amybradley on January 31, 2011:

This is something I think all of us need to do much more and more often then we actually do. Whenever I stop to think of all I have been given and blessed with in this life, I feel so much less angry or sad about the things I feel I did not have. Doing this simple thing really does make you "feel" inside a richer human than some with lots of actual money wealth may even feel at times, thanks so very much for sharing this here with us, inspiring stuff!! A.B.

Renee Hanlon from Michigan on January 30, 2011:

What a wonderful hub! It really keeps things in perspective when you count your blessings. I always find this to be very helpful when things may not be going so well. Once you list or just think of all the positives, you become uplifted.

Your fan and friend, vocalcoach :)

Hello my Micky :)- You are so kind. I always appreciate your support and you should see me "light up" when I get a message from you. Stay well and remember who loves 'ya baby! :)

Audrey Hunt (author) from Pahrump NV on January 25, 2011:

thelistlady = Fantastic! An excellent idea - a gratitude partner. And you just watch what happens. In no time, extra cash will come your way. Gratitude unblocks whatever is in the way for the cash flow. I am thrilled that this has helped you. What a sweetie you are! :)

TheListLady from New York City on January 25, 2011:

Thanks because this is a good pep talk for me and a reminder. I keep thinking about what I don't have right now - like a certain amount of needed cash. But I have sooooo much to be grateful for - I mean it. It is overwhelming.

But the negative gets in the way and consumes. So what I am going to do now is send an email to my gratitude partner. We used to regularly send each other a list of ten things to be grateful for then forgot. It's been months.

I'm alive again - yay! And grateful - for your hub. Rated up!

Micky Dee on January 25, 2011:

Very beautiful vocalcoach! Thank you dear! God bless you dear one!

Thanks my friend for sharing and God bless you.

Awesome and flagup! Your "richness" is one that cannot be taken away, or "lost." You have the sole discretion to keep and maintain your "riches..."

fucsia on January 24, 2011:

I like this Hub! Some months ago I found a pebble in my shoe. It had not given me any nuisance, I saw it only when I removed the shoe. Now this pebble is under my mirror in bathroom. Every time I look me, I see it. And every time I see it I remember to be greatful for something. It is not my idea but I was inspired by the movie "the secret". For me is a useful way to not forget all the beatiful thing there are in my life! Thanks for sharing your list!

Ashantina on January 24, 2011:

As I was reading this it was like you'd penned my own thoughts and way of living.. It truly is life changing when you become grateful for ALL of the abundance in your life.

Thank you for sharing.. I am always grateful to meet positive people such as yourself :)

Audrey Hunt (author) from Pahrump NV on January 24, 2011:

drbj - What a magnificent way to start my day! Your comments are my have also added an important point here with how we lose appreciation as we get older.

My Clancey is holding a baby's "binkie" in his mouth. Can you believe that? My friends baby dropped it's binkie and Clancey picked it up and claimed it for himself! :)

drbj and sherry from south Florida on January 24, 2011:

Lovely, beautiful, inspiring - I'm describing the photo of you hugging a tree. Oh, yes, your hub is that, too. Appreciating what they have is a mindset people often lose as they grow older. Thanks for reminding us, Audrey, in such a lovely way.

BTW, Is that a doggie toy that Clancey is holding in his mouth in that photo? He is a cutie. :)

I start my day recognizing that since I have opened my eyes, and gotten out of bed I am twice blessed from the start and every moment beyond that is a gift given by God that I ought to share with a smile.
