Celebrate Christmas With The Muppets
Do you love The Muppets? Are you curious about what Christmas specials they starred in? If so, you've come to the right place for on this page we are having a Christmas celebration starring Jim Henson's Muppets because we LOVE The Muppets.
We'll include a discussion of The Muppets Christmas Carol but we won't finish there for we'll learn a bit about the five Muppets Christmas specials that are all readily available on DVD.
Jim Henson's The Christmas Toy (1986)
A beloved Christmas film, which had a controversial re-release on DVD in 2009.
The Christmas Toy is a well loved film. In this story, Kermit acts as Santa Claus and introduces the story of Rugby the Tiger, a boy's favorite Christmas toy from the previous year. Rugby is worried that he is going to be replaced by a new Christmas present this Christmas. All the toys try to reassure him that he will not be replaced, but he decides to put himself under the tree thus assuring that he would not be replaced by a new toy. There's something magical about the toys coming to life in this show as well as a sweet story.
The original version of The Christmas Toy story received near perfect Amazon customer reviews. However, not everyone is quite so thrilled with the DVD version, which cut out Kermit's introduction and removed the Old Friends, New Friends song in which Kermit joins in at the end. Others claim that if you didn't know what was missing, you would love the show anyway. We saw and enjoyed The Christmas Toy version that includes Kermit. If he is your reason for being interested in this film, you should know that he might not make an appearance in the DVD version. And you might also like to be aware that Kermit is the only Muppet you will recognize in this film.
The Muppet Christmas Carol Movie (1992)
Charles Dickens classic Christmas story is retold by The Muppets as a musical under the direction of Brian Henson, Jim Henson's son. You'll find Michael Caine magnificently playing Scrooge, Kermit as Bob Cratchit and Miss Piggy as his poor wife with other Muppets rounding out the cast. This was the first Muppet show in which The Muppets portrayed characters other than themselves and they turned out to be wonderful actors.
Travel with Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future and enjoy this slightly unique version of this classic Christmas tale. We love how it contained the very American Muppets and the period setting of Charles Dicken's London, England.
Naturally, The Muppet Christmas Carol is a kid-friendly version, with Gonzo and Rizzo narrating and breaking up 'tense' moments. It is recommended for children of about age 6 and up, and is an excellent family Christmas movie choice. We re-watched this version of the Christmas Carol recently and enjoyed all of the cute critters - from singing vegetables and talking 'meece' to the usual cast of characters - and the humour and of course, the classic Christmas story.
A Muppet Family Christmas Television Special (1998)
A Muppet Family Christmas features both the Muppet gang AND the Sesame Street cast. They are all at Fozzie's farmhouse where they celebrating Christmas Eve. It is a musical program and the sing-along includes eight songs and plenty of humour and, of course, the beloved Muppets.
It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie (2002)
Perhaps NOT the best-ever Christmas film for your family.
It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie generated plenty of controversy when it was released because of the not-so-innocent adult references. The Muppet programs have always had humour for adults but not in a way that would be unsuitable for children. This one definitely crossed that line making it a fine choice for adult muppet fans but one to be wary of if children will be watching. References to topless dancers, 'hot' women, sexual teasing and more might go over some children's heads but seem inappropriate to us and to many other people in a Muppets movie.
If you are not showing It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas to children, you will love it. It is a beautifully done Christmas story that was funny and shared a number of pop culture references that we enjoyed, we would recommend this movie for all 'grown-up' Muppet fans.
A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa Television Special (2008)
A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa Television Special (2008)
A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa was a 2008 television special that featured your favorite Muppet characters preparing for the holidays...ah that is, Kermit and Miss Piggy getting ready to travel to the Caribbean; Gonzo to Hawaii; and Fozzie on a comedy tour -- everyone is busy. Kermit tries to convince them all to relax and they wind up helping the local postal workers. When they are done at the post office, Gonzo discovers that he has not mailed three letters to Santa. The gang puts their personal plans on hold to travel to the North Pole to give Santa those three letters.
You'll recognize a few human faces in this film, including Whoopi Goldberg, Uma Thurman and Nathan Lane.
