My Story

My name's Jerry. Glad to meet you. You must be thinking why I am here today? I want to introduce myself to you. Actually, I think you may not know a lot about me. Stop wondering. Oh, I know you are watching me since your childhood, but do you know my history? I think you don't.

To start with, I have always been associated with the name of my worst enemy, Tom, I am certainly the most hunted mouse in the world! And yet, it is thanks to these insane hunts that I have known the incredible success that has not left me for 80 years.

My story started in 1940, when the famous directors William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, to counter the Disney empire and its world-famous Mickey, decide to create new characters. In their first short film, Puss gets the boot, I appear as a little anthropomorphic brown mouse, that is, I stand like humans. For his part, Tom was first drawn on all four legs, like all cats, before also taking on a human appearance in subsequent episodes.

The best enemies in the world

In the space of the first seventeen years, a hundred and fourteen cartoon episodes were produced with the same recipe. Each time, Tom, the cat, searches for another subterfuge to catch me, and I manage to escape his claws. Hurt by his pride, he seeks revenge, but fails.

The story goes on and on. To write the scenarios, our designers were largely inspired by slapstick comedy, that is to say, stories in which we try to violate, in an exaggerated way, the other, in order to make the spectators laugh.

To highlight their actions, our characters do not express themselves, except to mark an emotion of fear, joy, or pain. William Hanna was also the first to lend his voice to Tom. The method devised works marvelously.

I prove that size and strength are not always the best counselors. Small but insightful, I emerge from all the bad situations and I succeed in turning them against Tom. However, sometimes our designers choose to make us both lose, or even a trap turns against me. Even if we get along like dog and cat - or rather, like cat and mouse - my sidekick comes to save me if ever the situation escalates, as has happened several times.

Ultimately, our hunts are more like playground games than real battles, and this is why viewers feel affectionate to our characters. Besides, Hanna and Barbera will say of us that we are "the best enemies in the world".

Our names

Did you ever think about where our names came from? Initially, William Hanna chose to call me Jinx, which literally means “bad luck”, while he calls Tom Jasper. However, we were renamed for episode two, The Midnight Snack. In English, a male cat is known as "tomcat", which would explain Tom's name.

However, this is not the only assumption. You may have noticed that our series was created during WWII. It seems, although no one has really confirmed it, that the directors wanted us to symbolize the enemy camps of the war: the Germans and the English. At the time, the British used to call their enemies the Jerries, a diminutive for the Germans, while they called themselves the Tommies.

After Hanna and Barbera, the producers choose to hire other cartoonists and screenwriters. In 1960, they first gave their trust to Gene Deitch, but the thirteen episodes he directed were not well received by audiences.

Three years later, Chuck Jones took over, but the outcome was not more compelling. Finally, in 1975, they decided to trust again the initial duo, Hanna and Barbera, and succeed.

Most violent cartoon in Warner Bros

However, there is a downside to success, and we are no different. Tom and Jerry are considered the most violent cartoon in Warner Bros., as our characters spend their time roughing up on one another in ways deemed extreme. Club, knife, gun, explosive, all means are good for bickering and all shots are allowed.

Some episodes have not been shown for a long time because of the violence they offer, or the ideology against the target of these cartoons. In one adventure, for instance, we smoke, and in another, we both commit suicide on the tracks of a train. Strange, when we know that our cartoons are primarily intended for children!

After 160 short films, one feature film and a dozen TV films that, over the years, have modernized our characters. We always attract younger generations to share their pleasure with their parents and grandparents!

It was a pleasure meeting you

It was a pleasure meeting you guys. Remember, Tom and I love our audience. We've been trying to be friends for a long time, but as you know, the relationship between a cat and a mouse can never be equitable. You somehow have to accept the way we are. Sometimes we try to be friendly, but what can I say. That's how the world accepts us.

Oh, I can smell the cheese somewhere. I'm starving, I'm starving. Have to go now before Tom uses any trick on me. Bye!
