MasterChef US Season 3 for Summer 2012

MasterChef has become an international sensation in recent years. Why is this reality show cooking competition so popular? Because everyone loves the idea of a group of talented "home cooks" competing for the grand title of MasterChef and seeing the amazing things they come up with every week. If you're like me then you love competing along at home, not just cheering on your favorite competitors but envisioning what you'd cook for each week's challenges and contests.

The third season of MasterChef US aired on the FOX network beginning in the summer of 2012. This season saw the emergence of one of the series' most amazing chefs ever, Christine Ha, who wowed the judges with her amazing palette and recipes while proving her vision disabilities were no obstacles to her success. This season's runner up, Joshua Marks, was also exceptionally talented and loved by many—yet after the show his fate was not so fortuitous and indeed was quite tragic, bringing to global attention the tragic affects depression can have on even the most gifted and talented individuals.

Here you will find more information on MasterChef in general and of course Season Three in specific. You'll find links for the contestants, episode recaps, and polls for every episode where you can share your thoughts on what happened—and see how they compare to fans around the world!

Gordon Ramsay of MasterChef

Gordon Ramsay of MasterChef

A Brief Introduction to MasterChef

The evolution of a global television sensation

MasterChef began as a BBC TV series which aired from 1990-2001 (it was revived in 2005 and continues airing on the BBC today). Although the format of the competition was different, the concept was the same: amateur cooks competing against each other for the title of "Master Chef". However, in 2009 MasterChef Australia first aired and became a massive success. It shot straight to the top of the ratings and its second season finale would become the 3rd highest rating show in Australia of all time.

This incredible success, of course, meant other nations would seek to copy the format of MasterChef Australia for themselves. MasterChef US premiered in July 2010, co-produced by popular restaurateur and cooking show sensation Gordon Ramsay. Gordon was joined in hosting duties by restaurateur and vineyard owner Joe Bastianich and Chicago-based chef Graham Elliot.

Since 2010 there have been countless other versions of MasterChef planned and running around the world. Here are links to just a few of them:

* MasterChef France

* MasterChef Indonesia

* MasterChef Ireland

* MasterChef Israel

* MasterChef New Zealand

* MasterChef Philippines

* MasterChef Sweden

Clearly, there is something about the format and concept of MasterChef which appeals all around the world. No doubt it is because every enthusiastic home chef at some point dreams of becoming a "celebrity chef" - perhaps running a restaurant kitchen, publishing cookbooks, or even getting their own cooking show on TV. It is fun to play along at home, thinking of how one would perform in the challenges the MasterChef competitors face and cheering on your favorite competitors.

Remembering Josh Marks

The sad fate of this season's runner-up

There is a terrible legacy for this season of MasterChef -- at least when it comes to the fate of second place contestant Joshua Marks. In October of 2013, Marks committed suicide, as reported by CNN. Marks had apparently been suffering from mental illness for some time, first being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and then schizophrenia (the second diagnosis coming just a week before his death). In July of 2013 he was arrested after assaulting officers and acting bizarrely, and his family had been rallying support for him in the months between then and his suicide.

His website I Shoot Onions remains online as a tribute to the "gentle giant" of a chef who was loved by so many -- not just close family and friends but viewers around the world who cheered him on during the competition.

After you guys let Becky win the episode with her dessert after the contestants were told they had to make a dish that could be sold for 40 to 50 dollars at a restaurant I was dubious about watching any more but after you got rid of Felix that was the last straw. As far as I am concerned you 3 judges did a great dis service by that and I will never watch another episode. If ever anyone should have gone it should have been David.

anonymous on September 06, 2012:

Ive been lucky enough to live in New Zealand for the past 4 years... MasterChef Australia is far superior to this show. For starters, they don't add all the cattiness and drama, which is nice since American TV thinks we want that... News flash, we don't. The judge/ chefs are nurturing teachers, not rude punks that yell at contestants... what a concept. American fans, you don't know what you're missing!

anonymous on September 05, 2012:

If Josh wins, I will never watch the show again.

U are out, u are out.

anonymous on September 04, 2012:

Ramsey, you are a fraud there is NO WAY that Josh and Christine should be in the finals. What are you doing? Catering to the minority and handicapped. Josh is clearly a lousy cook, and CHRISTINE IS NOT BLIND.... Fools

anonymous on September 02, 2012:

I love this show

anonymous on August 31, 2012:

I'm glad I found this page. I watched the last episode right to the near end when my tv kicked off because I had set up two shows on other networks to DVR and it cut Master Chef off just as the competition between Frank and Josh was to be announced. I tried watching it on On Demand, but you can't fast forward, so I never got a chance to see who the winner was. Thanks for the info.

anonymous on August 31, 2012:

I have nothing against Josh, but really dislike the fact he was brought back. The show took a weird turn for me with that. It really bothers me that he gets a second chance and is still there with Felix, Frank, and Monti gone (I don't feel bad for David...he was there way too long). I hope it comes down to Becky and Christeen. Josh doesn't belong there.

MrMojo01 on August 27, 2012:

Fun show! Enjoyed your lens

anonymous on August 24, 2012:

Thanks Sockii for this great lens. I love this show and I am someone who has no TV at home. But over the last 2-3 years I have been following this show on hulu - and its the only TV show I spend time on :).

However these days the results seem a bit 'adjusted' to make the show and the interaction between the contestants more exciting for the viewers. I came up with a list two weeks back when I noticed that I was able to say who would be eliminated next even before that show started. I made a bottom 5 elimination list and I was right on Monti from last show. Just wanted to put it here so that I have something recorded online before the future shows air.

Here the bottom five elimination list:

5. MONTI (I was right about this and I made this list much before last week's episode)

4. CHRISTEEN (She has to go next because josh-frank pair pair is too exciting to break before she goes)

3. JOSH (Josh has to go next because Frank is finals material)

2. FRANK (I could be wrong here, Frank is definitely the better Masterchef brand ambassador, BUT a woman could be favored by the judges)

1. BECKY (Winner)

Let's see if my theory is right! Happy Viewing!

anonymous on August 22, 2012:

Christine is great and a role model. There is one thing that we forget is that Christine gets help to do a lot of things, she is not 100%independent like the others. She should have her own cooking show not only for the blind but to get us to learn how to taste.

anonymous on August 14, 2012:

I love this show! I've been watching it on Hulu and it's addictive. I like most of the contestants too, but I'll admit that I was glad to see Ryan get booted. His attitude was terrible. I'm starting to feel the same way about David M. I can't wait to see what else this season has in store!

anonymous on July 25, 2012:

I am fascinated by how passionate the fans of this show are. I haven't see the show, but definitely will watch it after visiting this lens. Looking forward to watching it!

anonymous on July 25, 2012:

stacey's "get back in the competition" dish was way better than Josh. Great job Stacey! I think they had Josh picked out to go up against Ryan before the cook-off started.

And poor Felix. It should have been David M going home. Even David thought that.

pheonix76 from WNY on July 25, 2012:

I am really addicted to this show! Great lens!

sarasentor lm on July 11, 2012:

I just love those who makes delicious dishes. Master chefs i am with you.

Nicole Pellegrini (author) from New Jersey on July 10, 2012:

@anonymous: That would be sad, but could certainly happen. I don't see David as someone who would merit a "heartbreaking elimination", alas. I love Christine too, but sometimes I do feel like she's skirted by with great praise for what were actually fairly simple dishes - and then last night she totally failed at something that should have been simple.

I try not to watch the previews/spoilers myself, because I want to see every episode with fresh eyes...and you never can trust how they'll edit preview clips together...

anonymous on July 10, 2012:

I have a feeling it's Christine going home in episode 12, I love her, but the narrator said in the final scenes, "there will be a heartbreaking elimination" and everyone looks god smacked! and Becky cries! that could only be Christine right? Everyone loves her and it would be heartbreaking

Nicole Pellegrini (author) from New Jersey on July 07, 2012:

@anonymous: From what previous contestants have said, there is a large library of cookbooks they have access to all hours they are not filming. Also any of the elimination challenges, they are given a full demo before having to cook it (even though we don't see it on screen).

anonymous on July 07, 2012:

anonymous on July 03, 2012:

Tali's gonna make a comeback and win the whole thing. :D That would be so awesome. Today, they only showed 7 people out of the twelve. You didn't even get to see Felix, Stacey, Frank, or Josh's dishes! They also need to stop showing Monti's bickering so much. It gets old fast.

anonymous on July 03, 2012:

(Tuesday, July 3rd, US) David didn't go home? WHAT THE HECK! They freakin' threw out his dish! There was even a double elimination, and he was the only one who survived even though his was the worst! Absolutely ridiculous, This show is so rigged.

anonymous on July 03, 2012:

I may never watch it again. It was disgusting today when they asked Cowboy Mike to go. His first dish was amazing and his second was not up to par but he did not deserve to go. I hate watching Tali smile at the misfortune of his colleagues/peers and the dangerous mess he created. This show is psychologically disgusting and I was very saddened by the departure and of Cowboy Mike - we don't treat people that way in Canada.

waflinquist on June 06, 2012:

Joel of Jamaca, looked every bit the "current America Hero" type that he was trying to portray. As so often seem in the news, military persons are happy to be looking sharp and proudly showing their rank and badges representing their unit and sometimes its location. Being a veteran, my son often asks about those very things when we see a GI on the streets or on TV, however; perhaps to camera views, could not see anything that would show rank ("soldier" is not a rank), and most any proud military person is happy to note that, and as, nearly, if not all, their title along with the name and place of station is announced when on a talk or game show. And, did anyone else notice the patches you could see looked as if pinned on and definitely not completely attached...anybody notice that? and no rank visible? and possible other things.. Of course, not sure about Joel, however due to courtisies, discounts and words of apprecation and respect, "stories" of fraud frequently hit the news - even a guy on America's Got Talent, got caught! Would certainly hate to see anyone not familiar with military get scammed!
