Code Geass R2: Lelouch Is Alive

About Code Geass (Warning: Spoilers)

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is a popular Japanese anime that ran for 2 seasons. At the end of the second one, the protagonist Lelouch vi Britannia makes the ultimate sacrifice by establishing himself as a cruel tyrant, and then allowing his friend and rival Suzaku to kill him. The world celebrates the death of the evil Emperor, and peace is finally achieved - just like the two of them intended.

The fate of Lelouch, however, isn't so clear. Almost every character in Code Geass believes him to be dead, with the possible exceptions of Jeremiah and C.C. There's no conclusive proof that Lelouch is alive: the anime is open-ended, leaving it up to the watcher to decide - however, there are several hints and some very good arguments to support that. Personally I like to think that Lelouch is very much alive and well, traveling the countryside with his immortal companion C.C. and sampling pizzas and beer around the world. You will find some of the best arguments in favor of this theory below.

Proof That Lelouch Is Alive

Did Lelouch survive in the end? Yes, and here's why!

  1. Nunnaly saw Lelouch's memories when she touched him after he got stabbed by Suzaku/Zero. This is probably the best argument in favor of Lelouch being alive, since there's no other explanation for this weird phenomenon besides Lelouch acquiring Code, and thus gaining immortality, just like C.C.

C.C. has the Code, and you will remember that people saw her memories upon touching her on several occasions. Many years ago, C.C. was a Geass user herself - just like Lelouch - until her powers evolved sufficiently, and she acquired the Code from another Code possessor.

As for where Lelouch would acquire the Code (since he did not take it from C.C.): he got it from his father, Charles, in the World of C. You will recall Charles attacked Lelouch at the very end, and tried to choke him before Lelouch made him disappear.

This would make Lelouch a unique being, possessing both the Geass and the Code. Some people say the hint is the name of the anime itself (Code Geass) - it certainly fits, although that's not a very strong argument.

  2. Jeremiah (aka Orange) didn't attempt to stop Zero (Suzaku) as he attacked Lelouch. He merely pretended to protect him. Furthermore, he even smiled and mentally told Suzaku to go on when he used his shoulder to jump. This is very weird, as Jeremiah was fiercely loyal to Lelouch ever since learning the truth about his mother. Obviously he knew that Lelouch was going to "die" that day, although it's not clear if he knew the full extent of his plan. We could speculate that Orange-kun, being as loyal to Lelouch as he is, would only agree to the plan if he knew Lelouch was going to survive.
  3. The name of the second season, Code Geass R2, might symbolize Lelouch acquiring the Code. As you probably recall, C.C. and other code users are often called "C2", "V2", and so on. Lelouche Lamperouge would logically be called R.R., or R2 (seeing how Japanese pronounce L as R - Engrish FTW!). A weak argument for sure, but worth mentioning nevertheless.
  4. Schneizel continues to serve Zero after Lelouch's supposed "death". Since Lelouch used Geass to force Schneizel to serve Zero (Suzaku in disguise), after his death the effect of Geass should have ended. That Schneizel continues to serve Zero is an indirect proof that Lelouch survived.
  5. C.C. asks Lelouch a direct question at the very end of the Code Geass R2 anime. Another very strong argument, especially in the Japanese version of the Code Geass R2 episode 25, which you can watch below. C.C. asks Lelouch the following:

Geass, the power of the kings, makes people lonely. *laughs* Maybe that's not quite true, after all. Isn't that right, Lelouch?

Some people might claim that she was just talking to herself, but here are two important facts to consider:

    a) She definitely raised her voice when asking Lelouch if she was right (this is much more pronounced in the Japanese version with her "nee, Lelouch" being a lot louder than her previous musings).

    b) In the uncut Japanese version of episode 25, after C.C. asks the question, the camera switches to show the face of the cart driver, who smirks in a similar manner that Lelouch does. His face is obscured by the hat, but he definitely has the same black hair. (This part was apparently cut out later in the English dub to leave a more ambiguous ending).

(sorry for the typos)

jbrotabe on February 13, 2015:

Also, about the meaning of his sacrifice, Lelouch has always been a master at manipulating people (not just with his Geass), he also abandonned his humanity early in the anime with the Euphemia *event*. Why would he gain it back now and think he HAS to make this sacrifice when it would be easy for him to survive? It is not like his character to do such a thing. He created a new world, with his ego, don't you think he would want to see the result of the work of his life? I don't think so... My opinion is that he faked his death to have the same impact as his death would have caused but he then decided to live in secret with C.C. watching for afar the result of his creation.

jbrotabe on February 13, 2015:

C.C. would never have let Lelouch die, she keeps repeating it in the anime. Another thing (that'd be less glorious but would still explain), if you remember, Lelouch's maid (I don't remember her name) was able to look exactly like Lelouch, it would be possible he used his Geass on someone to play his role in the last scene, in which case, him and C.C. could be the only ones to know about it.

Lelouch Lives on December 12, 2014:

I believe that he is dead. His death otherwise would not have as much meaning. If the creator said that he is dead...then he's pretty much dead. I don't think you can argue that.

However, I do feel like the creators went out of their way to make it seem like he was not alive. I am really quite shocked that I have not found this reason on any list of reasons why Lelouch is alive. It's not the code, or Jeremiah knew, or the fact that Schneizel is still serving Nunnally or any of that.

The reason why Lelouch is alive is because Jeremiah is not serving Nunnally. Remember, Jeremiah is/was fiercely loyal to Lelouch and Nunnally. He was distraught when Nunnally was "killed." However, at the end of the series, Jeremiah is not serving under her. The question is why? Jeremiah would serve Britannia (either Nunnally or Lelouch), but at the end of the series, he is planting oranges. Now, of course he might have changed his mind, but I don't feel that that is necessarily in his character. He's been shown as a military man basically from the beginning. You might ask, well he has to take care of someone who lost her memory, but he could still do that from Britannia. It's not like she wasn't already one of the best pilots in the Britannia, so she should be able to cope with being there.

Additionally, you might be like, "Well, he was a large figure in the supposedly corrupt Britannian army, and so the people didn't like him." Well....that didn't stop Schneizel from being there.

Also, though the world moved toward peace, that certainly does not mean that an army goes away. They need an army to maintain order if the people who would not want the world to have peace rose up.

For that reason, Jeremiah must have an ulterior motive for being away from the military. It it wasn't loyalty to Nunnally or Anya or being tired of military, then it has to be for Lelouch. Jeremiah knew that Lelouch was alive, and so he set up shop in the country growing oranges so that C.C. and Lelouch could live together eternally. This is the most compelling reason that I find. In Jeremiah's character, I cannot think of a reason why he is not still with Britannia. He has no reason not to be...though I don't know if Lelouch perhaps told him to take care of C.C. and that was why he was out in the country. It's possible, but I find that reason to be a lot flimsier than simply believing that Lelouch is alive.

Ultimately, I believe in author having the final say, but it is interesting to speculate.

TL;DR: Lelouch is alive because Jeremiah is not serving anyone else.

@anonymous: actually, there is a comic that shows him giving himself the name R2 and he possesses the code at that time.

@anonymous: I love how you ducked the main point that was made pertaining to Nunally seeing Lelouch's memories after touching him. Love that.

meocoi312 on March 24, 2014:

Lelouch is alive but i think Geass is still working when the Geass posessor is death. Because Nunnally still blind and Anya doesn't remember anything when Charles is dead

Animeboy24 on December 21, 2013:

yes! he is the last part of code geass r2 a man that driving the cart with CC

Andrew Po (author) on September 16, 2013:

@anonymous: Good point.

anonymous on September 16, 2013:

also..why..the hell... would C.C be discussing Geass and the power of the king with a random dude on a carriage? and why would that make him smirk?

anonymous on June 23, 2013:

No question about it... This is a story where immortals exist. Why not our hero?. He who can make the impossible possible should be more than a king. The saying, great power comes with great responsibility... Lelouch sacrificed being with his sister and friends to make his dream come true. The story is useless if after all his sufferings and sacrifice, he will only die a villain. Beside CC will not let Lulu die. She promise!

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

I think that Dash from from the manga Code Geass: Shikkoku no Renya is Lelouch. I mean he looks just like Lelouch only older (same eye and hair color as Leloush) and most importantly and the most undeniable piece of evidence that no one could ever argue with is that he has geass in both eyes with power that is related to brain structure just like with Lelouch's geass.

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

@anonymous: I agree the color of the hat hides it

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

@anonymous: No one ever said that they had to get it from the one who gave them geass did they. Remember when Charles tried to take C.C.'s code, why do that if it was not possible. Also Marianne was not dead and was talking to C.C. telepathically. I also have to say that you do not deserve to say "ALL HAIL LELOUCH!!!" if you think that he is dead.

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

@anonymous: I agree they would not hide his face if it was not Lelouch and C.C. would not have tilted her head back as if to talk to the driver when she said "Right Lelouch

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

@anonymous: must have been because you obviously forgot that orange got a geass negating eye when he had cybernetic devices implanted into him

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

@anonymous: you are wrong it is not better for him to die you are stupid for saying that. you are right about the bowing to him thing though.

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

@anonymous: it was in there I just found out from someone that they just cut it out so the viewers could decide if he is dead or not and judging by the votes on this site they might decide to have him still be alive. you just have to believe

anonymous on June 20, 2013:

he is alive with C.C. and anyone who says that he is dead is a complete idiot and not a true fan of Lelouch

anonymous on June 04, 2013:

Lelouch is too smart to die like that ;p

anonymous on February 07, 2013:

well hes alive for shure, this makes the end perfect for me.

anonymous on January 27, 2013:

about the second point orange could hav agred to the plan because lelush used geas on hime.

sory about bad spelling also I may be wrong but i don't think lelush used geas on orange before but i could be wrong its bine a while sines i wached the show

anonymous on January 24, 2013:

@anonymous: No your completely wrong first of all if you read and researched you'd would of learned that they cut out the scene to all versions of code geass even the Japanese version and secondly authors can say anything to cover up stuff so your are completely wrong the author may said that but never told you about the scene being cut so he is alive and not dead secondly cc says something that foreshadows he's alive so your wrong my friend

anonymous on January 24, 2013:

Ok people simple few facts on why he's ALIVE first reason in the end of the show lelouch was shown driving the cart but the creators cut a few measly secondeds to the show and by doing that would make a big impact on the show witch people will dicide on what happened from there on but normally you would because he was show........... Secondly if you paid attention to the show it makes extremely perfect sense to why he's alive every single part and something sneaky is said that you won't catch........ Finally remember when CC said "GEASS GRANTS YOU THE POWER OF THE KING AND A LIFE OF SOLITUDE" first question do you know what solitude means probably not definition is.. State or situation of being alone.... And then she say " I MAY BELIEVE THAT MIGHT NOT BE CORRECT" so that foreshadows on why he's alive

Andrew Po (author) on January 22, 2013:

@anonymous: Right on!

anonymous on January 17, 2013:

whatever said above being true, i have one more point to add. you talk about orange's loyalty and the fact that he won't let lelouch die. what about c.c? through the anime she first thought her greatest wish was to die, but it was later revealed that her actual wish was to be truly loved in spite of who she was, something that her geass didn't let happen and neither did her code as she was always used and feared. why would she let zero requiem happen? in the 24th episode of R2, when she's fighting kallen, when asked if she loves lelouch she says, "it's about time i stop collecting experiences and start living". so why would she let lelouch, the one guy who loved her in spite of what she did to him, die? which is why i believe lelouch's code activated, he's an immortal, and he's chilling around the countryside with C.C for as long as they wish to, and when they finally decide to die, they die smiling

anonymous on January 12, 2013:

Lelouch is still alive.. the point on covering the face of the cartwheel driver is that we can conclude that lelouch isstill alive. why bother cover the face if lulu was already dead.. they are covering some truth here guys..

Lulu Forever...

Code Geass is a fantastic anime, which I have already watched more then a few times =) In regards to Lelouch being alive, I believe he is. The video above proves that, for those who don't believe pause the video where it shows the driver smirking and open up a new tab and find pictures of Lelouch and who will see the resemblance between them ;)....the shepe of the face, where the hair falls, it is exactly the same. With that I say Lelouch is alive =D

Max Wong from Singapore on November 29, 2012:

I absolutely loved the character developments throughout the whole two seasons. They are rich and colourful, with sides to them that makes them more than just drawings on the screen trying to play a role. Most notably would be the protagonist; the inner workings of Lelouch Lamperouge positively astounds me. He is not the generic clear-cut good guy, nor can he be rightly termed as the villain. An extremely complex character and one that left a deep impact on me. I especially loved his arrogance and dramatic flair for gestures and words. Of course, being bestowed the ability to bend people to one's will can (and usually will) cause power to go to one's head, but that's what made it even more interesting as a protagonist toeing the line between good and evil

anonymous on November 02, 2012:

The proof really is in the video, to those who do not believe that Lelouch is alive, isn't that video the BEST proof. If you would say that the person driving (whatever he is doing) is not Lelouch, then you don't even know how Lelouch looks like! The hair, the way he smirks, IT IS HIM! But if you don't want to believe, well, its up to you, you have your own opinion after all.. But for me LELOUCH IS ALIVE!

anonymous on October 29, 2012:

Though i really wish Lelouch is alive, none of these points are valid. The first point says that Lelouch acquired the "Code," but you can only take the code from the person you acquired the Geass from. The second point says Jeremiah didn't try to stop Suzaku from killing Lelouch, but it is highly possible that Jeremiah was included in Zero Requiem, and was told by Lelouch to allow Suzaku to kill him. The third point is a pretty weak argument as there is no proof or any theories to why Lelouch would be called R.R. (R2). The fourth point states that Schneizel continues to serve Zero even after Lelouch's death, but there is no proof that the power of Geass goes away after the caster has died. Charles vi Britannia casted his Geass on both Nunnally and Anya, and they were both still under his Geass's spell even after Lelouch killed Charles. The last point is the strongest, but many times during the series, C.C. has talked to Marianne throughout the series, and Charles also said he "talked" to Clovis even after Clovis died. When she raised her voice to ask "nee Lelouch?" maybe because she realized she still had human emotions after she fought with Kallen.

Even though I still hope that Lelouch is alive, because of my reasonings I believe Lelouch did not fake his death.

@anonymous: i hope lelouch is still alive and i hope they make Code Geass R3 i can't wait to watch it, if they make Code Geass R3! its like a mystery like what's going to happen is lelouch the cartwhell driver?

anonymous on October 28, 2012:

i think lelouch is still alive because lelouch is the cartwheel driver and why did they not show the cartwheel driver face

anonymous on October 21, 2012:

I believe that Lelouch is alive!

those writers shouldn't have remove that part where Lelouch's face is clearly seen!

anonymous on October 03, 2012:

i don't think point 4 is valid, as just because lelouch died doesn't mean he's geass will stop working. When charles died i'm pretty sure hes geass effect was still working as nunnally still had her eyes closed (until she used her willpower to open them).

lelouch lives, happy ending, show is now over permanently. what they want you to do now is to continue watching the other animes they make throughout the years. just goes to show how good of a writer IchirÅ Åkouchi is. expect to see more animes from Okouchi.

@anonymous: The video is too pixelized to even tell if the logo is there. It may have been hidden in the colors of the hat. We don't know.

anonymous on August 30, 2012:

If you don't believe me about the video, take a look at the top right hand corner of the second part of the video, the Japanese ending. There is a logo there. The video shows the logo throughout the whole Japanese ending except for the part where it shows Lelouch as the cartwheel driver.

anonymous on August 30, 2012:

...unless they make the sequel even better.

anonymous on August 30, 2012:

The video is fanmade. I watched the real Japanese ending and it showed the exact same thing as the English ending. According to sources, the original director and writer of Code Geass, confirmed his death. As much as I want Lelouch to be alive, you have to say that if the director/writer decides to bring him back to life, it will pretty much screw up the whole series and the main purpose of Lelouch's rebellion.

That was definitely Lelouch in the Japanese ending.

anonymous on July 04, 2012:

well to begin with Lelouch still have that promise to keep with c2 ,c2 alway was protective with him, to make sure he keep his part of the contract they made together she pretend to be him many time to keep him safe so she wouldn't have made him do that big ending act if she knew he would die. Then Lelouch gain the power in his other eye making him making him just like her .And the ending of the japan dub is more proof.

anonymous on June 27, 2012:

@anonymous: Agreed, Code Geass was a masterpiece. Was so gutted when it finished, such a fantastic plot.

As for a new anime, I would suggest DEATH NOTE. Excellent story, and the two main characters are amazing. (no mechas, though...)

If he is alive or dead that doesnt make any difference he showed the world what he wanted to show and did what he wanted to do.Everything whent according to plan.Dead or alive it woldnt make much of a difference its beter for him to die because Hell and the Devil himself will bow at the feet of Zero.

sara10928374 on March 21, 2012:

He is undeniably alive in the Japanese version, but I think made him dead in the English, so it would seem more ... heroic? I don't know what word to use, but it was kind of a way to show that his plan was to die in the end for his cause.

anonymous on November 28, 2011:

Of course Lulu is alive! He's together with Pizza Butt now, since he became a 'warlock' to her 'witch'. Lelouch planned *everything* throughout the series so his 'death' is keikaku doori.
