Meet Jennifer Lawrence: Oscar Winning Actress

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

Who is Jennifer Lawrence? Besides, of course, Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games movie was highly anticipated and well received. Some argued that it wasn't as good as the book but what movie is? The world waited anxiously to see how Hollywood would interpret the highly popular Hunger Games book trilogy and I think the result wasn't too bad.

At the same time, people wondered who Jennifer Lawrence was. We wondered how long she had been acting, what other movies she had appeared in and what she was going to be doing after The Hunger Games.

We aren't wondering anymore. We know who Jennifer Lawrence is and she has had a highly successful year since the Hunger games movie was released. If you are a movie fan, you will likely not have missed her in the Silver Linings Playbook. Even if you did not see that movie, you no doubt are aware that Jennifer Lawrence took home the Oscar for Best Actress at the 85th Academy Award ceremony held in February, 2013 for her role in that film.

If you are curious about this young actress who is currently being seen and heard everywhere, read on.

How & When Did Jennifer Lawrence Get Started Acting?

She was talented and took her talent to New York City.

Jennifer Lawrence is an American actress who was born on August 15, 1990 in Kentucky, the youngest of three siblings. Jennifer started acting professionally at the age of 14, when she auditioned in New York City with a few agencies despite the fact that she had never had any acting training. IMDB says that her interview was deemed "the best cold read by a 14-year old ever."

She left one audition and was immediately spotted by another agent who was in the midst of shooting an advertisement. The very next day that second agent invited her to audtion and was also impressed by her ability.

Eventually, it was decided that Jennifer would stay in New York City for the summer of 2004 in order to work on her career.

What Other Movies Has Jennifer Lawrence Been In?

Jennifer Lawrence has a number of acting roles on her resume.

Jennifer did spent the summer of 2004 in New York City working. She debuted in a guest spot for MTV and went on eventually to film commercials, appear in in guest spots on Monk, Cold Case, Medium and Devil You Know.

Success meant a move to Los Angeles where she appeared in the 2007 television series The Bill Engvall Show and 2008 movies Garden Party, The Poker House and The Burning Plain. Of course, her greatest success (before The Hunger Games) was in Winter's Bone in 2010, for which she won awards including Hollywood Awards' Best Newcoming Actress. In 2011, she appeared in Jodie Foster's The Beaver, X-Men: First Class as Mystique and Like Crazy.

Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone

Jennifer received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in this indie film.

Winter's Bone was an unexpected hit in 2010 and earned Jennifer Lawrence a nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars. She was the second youngest actress ever to be nominated for that honour.

Winter's Bone is an R rated movie that includes drug dealing, drug use and profanity that I have yet to see...the trailer makes shivers go up my spine. I'm not sure if I look forward to watching it or not but I will say that I am intrigued. The New York Times called Jennifer's performance, "watchful, precise and quietly heroic."

The Hunger Games Trilogy

The Hunger Games Trilogy

The Hunger Games Trilogy

Jennifer Lawrence plays the main female character, Katniss Everdeen

If you are reading this page, it is a pretty sure thing that you know The Hunger Games. If you have seen the movie, you have been introduced to Jennifer Lawrence.

Director Gary Ross has been quoted to have said that Lawrence's talent is "unique in her generation." He also said that casting her was simple since Jennifer is also "brave, strong, self-confident, she knows who she is ... she's very clear, there isn't a great filter. Jen will kind of say anything, all of which can describe Katniss."

The hardest part of the role for Jennifer was knowing that no one would want to watch a movie for two hours if they did not like the character coupled with the fact that in the book Katniss Everdeen struggles to make people like her.

Physically, getting ready for The Hunger Games meant Jennifer had to really get in shape. Her regime included free-running, combat training, climbing, yoga and archery. She would have liked to do more of her stunts than she did but the studio was not keen on letting their lead actress place herself at risk.

No doubt about it, Jennifer's role as Katniss Everdeen has set the world on fire. It will definitely define her career.

Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook

The Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Jennifer Lawrence was brilliant in the Silver Linings Playbook. So brilliant in fact that she took home the Oscar for Best Actress at this year's Academy Awards ceremony. I went to the movie theatre to see the film with uncertainty. Would Jennifer be able to pull it off? That is, would she be able to convince me that she was another character and not Katniss Everdeen? Well, she did and I am thrilled to be able to HIGHLY RECOMMEND the movie the Silver Linings Playbook.

Jennifer Lawrence - Oscar for the funniest speech...

Jennifer Lawrence isn't as poised or as perfect as some Academy Award winning actresses but that is why I like her. Her reactions, which sometimes prove embarrassing, make her seem real. Enjoy this short and edited video of her question and answer segment after she received the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Matthew from Silicon Valley on March 28, 2012:

Thank you for sharing this article and one of the things I was so impressed with about this movie is how they had an incredibly strong leading lady that for once was not sexualized at all. She could be strong without wearing skimpy tight clothes. Wrote my own lens on some other thoughts on the book & movie if you are interested at www.squidoo.com/Hunger-Game. Thank you for sharing this great lens.

Clairissa from OREFIELD, PA on March 27, 2012:

This was such a great movie. We saw it last night!

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on March 27, 2012:

@Karlaashlee: Read the book & then see the movie. The book is a young adult book so it shouldn't take you long to get through it. You'd probably still have time to catch The Hunger Games in the movie theatres.

Karlaashlee on March 27, 2012:

OMG! I cannot wait to see this movie. Still debating if I should read the book first?! But Jennifer Lawrence seems to be one to look out for!

I've watched The Hunger Games and have to say she did a fantastic job in The Hunger Games too. Apparently, she have a good sense of humor too.
