Goodbye - A Chained Melody

Chained Melody

Babe,

I'm leaving, I must be on my way. Your pride has built a wall so strong that I can't get through. Don't try to find me, please don't you dare. My train is going, I'm traveling to an unknown place.

All these words that I heard spoken are just promises broken now, into the silence that surrounds us and then drowns us in the end. I don't want to be the girl that has to fill the silence, the quiet scares me because it screams the truth, that I'm crazy for trying, and crazy for crying, and I'm crazy for loving you. Crazy for thinking that my love could hold you.

I thought nothing could change what you mean to me, that I'd been loving you too long to stop now, but I know I've been lying to myself... Your pride has built a wall so strong that I can't get through.

Did you think I would curse you, say things to hurt you? Call you up in the middle of the night, like a firefly without a light? Wear my heart like a crown, pretending that you're still around?

Don't answer me. Don't break the silence. Don’t waste your time trying to fix what I want to erase. I've played all my cards, and that's what you've done too, there's really nothing you can say that will make me stay, there's nothing you can do to make me change my mind. There's nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove, your pride has built a wall so strong that I can't get through.

Babe ... I'm leaving, I must be on my way. I wish that I could stand here and fade away, so that no one could see the tears running down my face. I promised myself I wouldn't weep... One more promise I couldn't keep, but you're never going to see me cry the last goodbye.

And what side of Pecos would that be, Buffoon? 'Cause maybe I'm in the other side!! HEHE Just kidding there, very glad you enjoyed!

Buffoon on January 01, 2011:

Dude, this is TOO clever! And here I was thinking I was the cleverest buffoon this side of Pecos... seems NOT *L*

Elena. (author) from Madrid on December 26, 2009:

Hi, camlo! Glad you enjoyed this one, too! I don't know that I will do any more of these, I guess I could indeed, there are enough songs out there to compose 1000 letters out of the lyrics, but the novelty wears off after a couple :-) Oh, I don't know, maybe I will, but not with song lyrics, maybe I will attempt a different type of composition with, say, best quotes from movies or some such! Thanks for reading!

Camlo De Ville from Cologne, Germany on December 26, 2009:

Hi Elena! Had I not known what to expect, it would have taken me a little longer to realise what I was reading. There are a couple of artists here I'm not familiar with (will have to look them up).

Nevertheless, this is still amazingly good. Brilliant.

Will you be doing any more of these? I could probably read them all day ...

All the best, Camlo

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 22, 2009:

Thanks, trooper :-)

trooper22 from Chicago on June 22, 2009:

A chain of great songs....well done :)

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 20, 2009:

Sunny, your boyfriend and I are on the same age bucket, makes sense he'd recognize some of the songs :-)  And sure I gave credit, otherwise there's no fun whatsoever in this hub!  The whole point was actually giving credit, but I guess you got that at the end, didn't you :-)

Feel free to borrow the idea, I hope it makes you look as clever as it did me! Never mind if I am or not, appearances are all that counts!  Just kidding! Laugh!

Sunny Robinson from Tennessee on June 19, 2009:

Oh my. You are so, so, so gorgeous in your hubs. So inspirational. I wish I had thought of this! I have so many songs rambling around in my head that I never thought about using my favorite lines or phrases in this manner. I wonder if I could steal this idea and try it one day?

Haha, you got my boyfriend singing some of his favorite songs from your hub now. I showed it to him because I found it incredibly clever. Just now, he said, "Wow I was about to say she copied the lines from songs! Then I found she actually gave credit. I recognized about a dozen or so..." He loves the oldies ones. ;) He's 37. I'm ashamed to say it hadn't even occurred to me it was from songs you put together until I saw the end.

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 12, 2009:

Hello, Mr Reilly! Thanks for the compliment! I had fun with this little experiment, glad the result worked out :-)

Christoph Reilly from St. Louis on June 12, 2009:

Awesome!  I kept recognizing little snippets of songs, and then when I saw where they all came from...wow!  What a clever mind you have, darling Elena!

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 11, 2009:

Go on and make me blush, LG, why don't you? :-) Glad you enjoyed!

LondonGirl from London on June 11, 2009:

That's wonderful, you are very gifted indeed. And what's even more amazing, English isn't your first language!

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 10, 2009:

Hey, Shalini!  You didn't miss it, you're here now! :-)  Thank you! I've heard "clever" a few times in the comments for this hubby hub... do you think it'll go right up to my head? I hope not!! :-)

Shalini Kagal from India on June 10, 2009:

How did I miss this? Elena - that was super and very clever - what a great song it's turned out to be!

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 10, 2009:

Thank you, Good Cook!

The Good Cook on June 10, 2009:

This was clever and entertaining!

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 09, 2009:

De rien, Tom! :-)

Tom rubenoff from United States on June 09, 2009:

Wow, that was really fun. Thanks, Elena.

Jewels from Australia on June 09, 2009:

Oh geez, that shows how far behind I am!

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 09, 2009:

Start with Sober by Pink, Jewels, that'll put some bounce to your step! :-) Plus, it's the only one that's "new", most of these are oldies and goldies, too!

Jewels from Australia on June 09, 2009:

Some of these 'newer' songs I'm going to listen to - I'm sooooooooo behind with music I'm ashamed. Clever.

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 09, 2009:

Grundy!  Shame on you for stuffing your balloon up someone else's ... cubicle!  Laugh!  I swear, it's like I live on a different corporate planet, I just don't know that I could have stuck with it for as long as I have, had I ever had to live through that insidious crap!  (here's to hoping CRAP isn't banned in the HP system!)

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 09, 2009:

Thank you, Jama! In this particular instance, I'm not sure about talent, but cleverness does play a role :-) Besos!

pgrundy on June 09, 2009:

Yeah, actually I feel the same way about theme days. Used to get marked down all the time for not participating in 'dress up like a cowboy' and 'wear a silly hat' day. Getting 'marked down' was worth it too. :)

The straw that broke the camel's back at my first corporate job was when someone got the brilliant idea of tying smiley faced balloons to the cubicles of people whose stats met goals (as a reward). Wow, I never saw a work place so fired up (angry) over those dumb balloons. People didn't want the balloons, management was like, "You must display the balloons!" Then there was an all out shouting match about whether smiley-faced balloons are degrading rewards or not (I say yes, but I stayed out of it).

I just moved my balloon to the cubicle of someone who didn't get a balloon and acted like I never got one (see how I am? you can't trust me), but boy was that asinine.

Joanna McKenna from Central Oklahoma on June 09, 2009:

Very clever! Once again, you amaze with your talent for stringing phrases together like a set of matched pearls. Awesome!

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 08, 2009:

Hey, Pam! What took long was smoothing out the details, the general concept wasn't too difficult :-)

Playing this 'talk in lyrics' game with friends could be fun, I can see it now, "you are the sunshine of my life in my strawberry fields forever"!  BUT, if I ever have a theme day at work ... I'm outta there! Laugh!

pgrundy on June 08, 2009:

Wow, this must have taken you forever! Very cool!

I just got this great idea. Wouldn't it be cool to have a 'talk in rock lyrics' day? You know, all day, on that one day, everyone could ONLY speak rock lyrics (and cite the source).

Next time you need a theme day at work, that one's on me! LOL! :)

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 08, 2009:

Thanks, Benjiester, glad you liked!

Benji Mester from San Diego, California on June 08, 2009:

Wow, this is awesome. I thought I recognized some of those lines. You always write the most moving things about love and loss. Thanks for sharing.

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 08, 2009:

Hello, Iphi! Thank you, thank you, it seems I pulled a rabbit out of my hat with this one, I'm glad it got you, in a good way! :-)

KCC, I can relate to "start singing the song", man, I can't take BABE out of my head now! :-) At least I just have this one stuck inside, imagine if it was a cacophony of ALL of them! Laugh

KRC from Central Texas on June 08, 2009:

The opening WAS the giveaway for me. I immediately starting singing the song. Then the lyrics from Sober by Pink was the clincher. Then I started to recognize more of them and decided they all must be.

Iphigenia on June 08, 2009:

I thought it was one of your letters about love - I was worried that you had just ended a relationship - I didn't get it at first - and was feeling really sympathetic towards you - now I just bow to your brilliance in constructing this narrative.

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 08, 2009:

Cheers, ag! Here's me bowing at the waist ! :-)

Peter from Australia on June 08, 2009:

Elena great idea, beautifully crafted . Take a bow dear girl :-)

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 07, 2009:

Good morning in the morning, everyone!

KCC - Great that you picked up on it :-) I though the opener would be a dead giveaway, at least to some. Guess opening the next one with "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" will also help? :-)

Hawkesdream - Cheers, glad you enjoyed!

Violet, indeed, MAJOR fiction ;-) You know, I never thought myself very (if at all) artistic, more like stubborn :-) Remember the movie "Moulin Rouge" where the script is one song after the other? I thought if they could do it with a movie, I could do it with a wee letter! Laugh!

LM & Golden - Merci beaucoup! (Glad I could finally prove I'm not just a pretty face... AHEM... COUGH... AHEM)

goldentoad from Free and running.... on June 07, 2009:

very cool Elena!

Laughing Mom on June 07, 2009:

Pretty ingenious, Elena.

VioletSun from Oregon/ Name: Marie on June 07, 2009:

You are very artistic with words and photographs if I may add. This was beautifully done!

P.S. glad its fiction! ;)

Al Hawkes from Cornwall on June 07, 2009:

Unlike KCC, I did not pick up on what you had done, I read it with interest and intent and thought to myself , what a ay with words. When I realized what you had done , my thoughts were, this is damn amazing!

KRC from Central Texas on June 07, 2009:

I absolutely loved it Elena! That is very clever! I had picked up on it right from the start, but didn't recognize all of them. Thank you for putting the answers at the bottom!

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 07, 2009:

Thanks, Story! :-)

Barbara from Stepping past clutter on June 07, 2009:

Nice! How creative. I'm impressed Elena.

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 07, 2009:

Thank you, Frieda! :-) When I saw your name in my inbox, I was kinda dreading a lecture on producing yet another hub on lost love :-P I'm glad you liked this one! Besos!

Frieda Babbley from Saint Louis, MO on June 07, 2009:

What a terrific idea miss creative! This is awesome! I can't wait to read the next one! Fantastic.

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 07, 2009:

Thank you, nazishnasim! I had fun doing this -- actually thinking on the next :-)

nazishnasim on June 07, 2009:

How Creative! Love the concept behind this hub! :D

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 07, 2009:

Hello, Cris and muchas gracias!  I do know most of these songs, more than a few of the lines are classics in themselves in my heart, but I did have to work to get the details sorted out, and make all of these flow together :-)

Teresa, focus on one line and ignore the rest! How about: "There's nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove"?  Or maybe, "Babe, I'm leaving", or... UH OH, I see what you mean!  Laugh!

Sheila from The Other Bangor on June 07, 2009:

Now I've got all these songs in my head at once! Clever idea. But I gotta go empty my head now before it explodes.

Cris A from Manila, Philippines on June 07, 2009:

Wow aren't you a clever girl! This must have taken alot of work or was it easy for you because you know all the songs? Anyway, I enjoyed it thoroughly - the lines flow to the next beautifully. Thanks for sharing your creativity :D

Elena. (author) from Madrid on June 07, 2009:

Gracias, Feline! Glad you find it clever :-) I could tell the story of how I thought of this, but then where would the mystery be? ;-)

Anthony, thanks for the comment, but this hub is really fiction, MAJOR fiction :-)

Anthony James Barnett - author on June 07, 2009:

Elena, your heart must have been badly broken. You wear your emotions on your sleeve but don't let it wear you down. There IS life after break-up.

Feline Prophet on June 07, 2009:

Elena! What a clever hub...and the result is quite arresting. How did you even think of this? (An aside...Unchained Melody is one of my favourite songs!)
