A List of Asian Dramas and Movies with the Gender Bending Theme

For some reason there has been an upsurge of gender bender stories in contemporary Asian dramas and movies lately. It may be due to the increasing popularity of manga and anime which have long been tackling the gender bending theme so now the live adaptations of these stories are naturally following suit.

If you think about it, the concept of a girl disguising as a boy has been done so many times in Asian history and literature - an example would be the well-known epic tale of Hua Mulan. Also, Asian actors and actresses can easily pull off these kinds of roles since there are a lot of androgynous looking males and females in this part of the globe.

If you're looking for stories with the somewhat controversial theme, here now is a list of gender bender movies and dramas that I know of (so far). Make sure to choose your favorite one in the poll below.

If you know of an Asian gender bender movie or TV series that I may have neglected, please feel free to let me know so I can add it to the list.

What do you think of gender bender stories in Asian cinema and TV series? - Let me know right here.

saloni on March 07, 2017:

Bromance is an amazing show, which is also gender-bending.

Drama wierdo on September 27, 2015:

I really dont know that much of tawanese dramas but you sould really watch (JUST YOU) trust you will love it

dramafreak on June 28, 2015:

hi anonymous so I don't know if u found that movie u were searching for 24 monthago but it sounds like a movie called 'iron road'. I think its Chinese and its awesome. =D

anonymous on July 08, 2013:

The main problem that I have is that i know, what the movie is about (the one I want to watch) but i don't know the name of the movie. The facts that i know is that the movie has: gender bender, romance and historical. He (she) works in a mine or some sort and no one knows that he is a she, but somehow the son of the mine owner finds out and they fall in love when he's father finds out that he wants such a low class girl he wants to kill her but it fails......

I have seen this movie around 6 years ago and i never seen it again. If anyone knows the name of the movie can you please help me out. (unfortunately i don't know whether it's Chinese, or Korean or whatever because then i was not able to distinguish between them... Sorry)

Satores on May 02, 2013:

I forget the tv show because it got canceled..never really watched it myself but it involved dressing good looking guys as girls..and then I believe the audience and a panel would vote for who made the prettiest girl....I guess it would be called a variety show or something..I'm not certain if it was just a small segment of an entire show or just a show in itself but I know it was a Japanese tv show..some of them actually made convincing girls..its was kinda creepy..lol....some of the audience/panel would say...no way that's a guy....he's so cute..and such..I saw a small scene of the show on a website but i think its been removed by now..

Satores on May 02, 2013:

I don't understand why they don't more boy to girl cross dress..they do it in manga and anime all the time..but in live drama its usually girl to boy..is it just they can't find actors willing to do it or is it just very difficult because it requires high level acting...the reason I don't like girl to boy gender benders is they usually are almost all the time highly aware of their true gender and so they don't fully immerse themselves in their characters..its not even acting for me it's a shallow lie trying to be conceived as having real depth..for an example..if a girl disguised as a boy goes inside a boys changing room she will probably highly awkward and try not to get embarrassed but a guys disguised as a girl has to worry about being exposed on a higher level...I just don't believe its equal tension and risk..its seems riskier for a male to be exposed than female.. but that is what makes it interesting

Satores on May 02, 2013:

to be honest...the idea of a girl disguising/acting like a boy is so played out..its not interesting since women wear pants and even act masculine in real life its not really interesting at all...perception is not just as important as skill level..it would be harder and more interesting to see male actors play the role of women..you need a certain look and level of skill to conceal the true male gender...even if they make such movies where a male "cross dresses" in a film the female counterpart is usually played by a female actress..thus not truly cross dressing anyway...very few actors could pull it off but I've seen maybe two actually do it and make convincing women..but it makes for a far more interesting drama..

anonymous on October 07, 2012:

The poster of the Butterfly Lovers in this post does not correspond to the synopsis! The poster's Butterfly Lovers is a movie where the woman, Zhu Yanzhi and the man, Bro Shan were studying martial arts. The story resembles Romeo and Juliet. The synopsis given is for another Butterfly Lovers, a version i much preferred. Since i can't post link just google on with Peter Ho and Angel as main casts..

Hope you'll be changing the post? include the butterfly lovers drama please? I honestly like it better than even the 1st shop of coffee prince, sungkyunkwan scandal and you're beautiful! Though the ending sucks for meee :((

PangWasHere on November 15, 2010:

Great rant! For some reason, I can't help but read your lenses. They are really interesting and well-written.

From this, I have learned that in gender bender genre, rarely will you find a guy disguising as a girl.

I would like to watch some of the featured dramas/movies here.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge about this topic.

scar4 on November 10, 2010:

Wang-ui Namja or The King and the Clown (South Korean film), starring Lee Jun Ki. I watched it many times and was crazy about it until now! Hope you like it too!

dancerene on November 02, 2010:

Haha... I was crazy over Hana Kimi at one time but I never realise there are so many such gender bender stories in Asian cinema & drama series though I've watched quite few you mentioned. I think such stories are quite common in Japanese manga comics too? Chinese stories such as the Butterfly Lovers and Mulan have been around for decades and maybe centuries, I think.

Treasures By Brenda from Canada on November 02, 2010:

Here is a movie theme that I'd never heard of.

Nathalie Roy from France (Canadian expat) on November 01, 2010:

Very interesting topic. recently I saw a TV reporter doing a news clip about a girl posing as a boy because of family so they could get her a decent education and better money revenue. That was weird, at 6 years old you could pass for other gender...but as time goes it is more difficult. Anyway, thank you for introducing this new "genre" to me:)

Cynthia Arre (author) from Quezon City on October 31, 2010:

@jimmielanley: I hear you Jimmie! There are some who are able to pull it off (or sometimes the great acting distracts me from remembering that she's actually a she) but most of the time, I think the actresses are way too pretty to look like men.

Jimmie Quick from Memphis, TN, USA on October 29, 2010:

What amazes me about the movies I've seen is that the women who are posing as men do not in any way look like men. Through the whole movie I'm thinking, "WHAT? How can they not SEE this is a woman?"
