Firelight Movie Review

Watch Cuba Gooding Jr. in Firelight

We're always very excited when there is a new HALLMARK HALL OF FAME MOVIE. On April 22, 2012, Hallmark premiered FIRELIGHT, starring Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. and Darnell Martin, who we saw last year in The Lost Valentine.

Firelight also features three young female actors, two of whom you might recognize: Q'orianka Kilcher appeared as Pocahontas in The New World and DeWanda Wise appeared in the movie Precious. Making her first acting appearance in Firelight is Rebecca Rivera.

Hallmark reserves its best productions for its Hall of Fame movies and, luckily for us, airs them on a television channel other than the Hallmark Channel, knowing that Hall of Fame movies often draw audiences that shatter viewing records.

On this page, learn a little bit more about Firelight and find the movie trailer. After you have seen the movie, be sure to come back here and let us know what you think.

What Is The Movie Firelight About?

The plotline follows an individual named D.J. who is a counselor at a correctional center for women. He has spent his working life trying to help young people win back their lives through helping others. In this movie, he talks a group of women into joining a team of firefighters who battle forest fires and other search and rescue duties.

Firelight Premiere

Firelight premiered on ABC on Sunday, April 22, 2012.

I was thrilled to discover that Firelight was going to premiere on ABC and not on the Hallmark Movie Channel! It aired on ABC, which meant that more people, myself included, could watch it when it premiered. Thanks, Hallmark, for delivering Hallmark Hall of Fame movies on a channel that more of us can watch.

Firelight Movie Review and Rating

As is usually the case, I was impressed with Hallmark Hall of Fame's presentation of Firelight. Starring Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. and a cast of young female actors that included Q'Orianka Kilcher, Dewanda Wise and Rebecca Rivera, it was a touching story presented in a manner that will not offend. All put in strong performances that will take you on an emotional roller coaster that includes sorrow, disappointment, happiness and likely tears.

The Catholic News Service blog calls this movie inappropriate for the youngest because of the portrayal of crime and results of physical abuse, the latter of which is not shown on screen, and goes on to say that, "teen viewers and their elders will find it an inspiring tale replete with positive values." I am inclined to agree but believe that it might also be suitable for preteens who are learning about the world and who have an understanding of situations like crime and abuse.

In Summary

Advance reviews of Firelight used words like subtle and uplifting, which did not surprise me at all since this is the way HALLMARK HALL OF FAME movies tend to be...excellent stories, with a message and, as Hallmark itself says, this movie is about how one individual can make a difference in the lives of others. What could be more powerful than that?

This show could have been done in a 30 minute format. The ultimate denouement was great, but it just too long to get there. I kept fast-forwarding, which is never a good sign when watching a movie.

That was one of the best movies I have seen in years. Primetime NO cussing, NO nakedness, NO violence to women or sexual innuendo, just a good positive uplifting movie, I agree a weekly series would be awesome and so worth watching, I loved Cuba!!!!!!!

With Cuba Gooding, Jr., it has to be spectacular. His acting in "As Good As It Gets" with Jack Nicholson was simply outstanding. In fact, I have enjoyed everything that I've seen him in.

This sounds like another winner. I love the Hallmark Hall of Fame movies. They seem to be made really well and tell stories that aren't so sappy, which can happen with TV movies.
