Esmeralda of Notre Dame de Paris (Hunchback Musical)

Notre Dame de Paris is a popular French musical that has been translated into many different languages and has had many different casts. The show premiered in 1998 and was written by Richard Cocciante and Luc Plamondon. Esmeralda is the titular character (Notre Dame de Paris means Our Lady of Paris and refers to both The Cathedral and Esmeralda) and she appears on stage more than any other character. Out of 51 songs she is on stage for 35 of them.

This page is about the actresses who have played her throughout the multiple languages, countries and casts.

A bit Bit on Esmeralda from Notre Dame de Paris;

She doesn't know where she was born but she grew up in Provence. She dreams of returning to Andalusia as her mother spoke highly of it. She also dreams of a world without any kinds of borders. Esmeralda falls in love with Phoebus but is very close with Clopin who acts as her guardian and she develops a close bond with Quasimodo. She dislikes Frollo.

She wears two costumes a swirl pattern green dress with mismatch sleeves and a slit and a prison dress with a cowl neck, flutter sleeves, and ruffles on the skirt. These costumes vary from through the different productions of the show. Some Esmeraldas wear a third dress, a red dress with fringe at the end of sleeves which are 3/4, rose details on the skirt, and a green fringed kerchief wore at the hip. This dress is usually for promotional pictures, but was used in the Russian show during La Volupte.

(To my knowledge/research, this list is complete, if I'm missing an Esmeralda please let me know, I'm not going to cover all the London Stand-bys.)

Helene Segara as Esmeralda

Helene Segara as Esmeralda

Helene Segara

Helene Segara was the first to play Esmeralda on stage in Notre Dame de Paris. Prior to Notre Dame she sang in bars in the French Riverra. After Notre Dame she became a star. Helene Segara's Esmeralda is sultry and mysterious. Segara does not play her youthful but I don't find fault with her performance as her singing is expressive and lovely. Segara also doesn't dance frequently but the few dance-like moves she performes does not look awkward.

She was born February 26, 1971 in Six-Fours-les-Plages, in the south of France. Her father is of Italian descent and mother is Armenian. She left home at the age of 14 to pursue singing. She sang in piano bars in French Rivera which expanded her repertoire. In 1993 she released her first single Loin which did not meet with much success. In 1996 she moved Paris and her career did better with Je vous aime adieu, the first single from her debut album, Coeur de verre (1996), and the duet Vivo per lei, performed with Andrea Bocelli. After Notre dame de Paris however, her career was jeopardized after she was diagnosed with a cyst on her vocal cords. She underwent laser surgery to have it remove. After her recovery she released her second album in 2000 which top the charts and went Diamond. According to a poll made by the IFOP, Segara was the French people's favourite French singer at the time. In March 2003, she released a third album and two singles. Her fourth album marked a change of style for her which was more rock and she wrote the lyrics herself. The album achieved gold status three months after its release for more than 200,000 copies sold. In 2007 she released two singles and a box set with cds. She released another album in 2009 which she rewrote lyrics of well known song from all over the world. On April 25 2011, she released her latest album called Parma La Foule which made it into the top ten it's first week out.
