Top 50 Best Dog Movies for a Pet Lovers (2022 Netflix Amazon Prime)

List of Greatest Films On Dogs

Dogs are the truest and most loyal friends of man. Not only you can train them easily but also they become the best companion if you are living alone. Even if you're with family, you can own a dog as they are loved by kids.
Everyone accepts the fact that there is no one loyal like dogs. Even Hollywood accepts it and from time to time has produced movies that have dogs as their central character. Not only do these movies make the central dog a celebrity but also help in the increase of the sales of that breed.
Personally, if I love to watch any pet in a film then it is dogs. They're so adorable, cute, and intelligent. Though I love cats and chimps too they can't beat a loyal dog. I also own a German shepherd. Her name is Timmy. She is very cute and adorable. I would personally dedicate this lens to her.
I watched many dog movies mainly I wanted to improve my interaction with my pet. Yeah, I did purchase Dog training guides and read them too. But, I guess these movies were a more fun way to learn how to treat and teach a cute pup. Though I had to go by the books to train her where to poop.
Here is a list of the best dog films that were not only loved by people but also influenced pop culture. Also, I have included my favorite "Top 10 movies on dogs".
I have chosen only those movies where either dog was a central character or played a pivotal role in the plot. Visitors often comment about several movies where they saw a cute pup with an actor or actress. I haven't included such films in the list.
Though I have tried my best to list the most popular films on dogs still if you find any of your favorite dog movies missing then do let me know in the comments.

Do You Know About Rin Tin Tin?

The Biggest Canine Superstar Hollywood ever had

Have you heard about Rin Tin Tin? He was a canine film star (German Shepherd breed) who rose to fame during the silent era of Hollywood. 'Rinty' as he was affectionately called, went on to star in more than 27 Hollywood films.

He was so popular during that time that He received the most votes for Academy Award for Best actor in 1929. If the Jury has not ruled him out, Rinty would have become the first (and most probably the only) Dog to win An Oscar. It is believed that it was Rin tin that raised the status of Warner bros. in filmmaking.

It was Rin Tin tin's popularity that the German shepherd became one of the most popular poets of all time. The Real Life of Rin Tin Tin was as fantastic as his on-screen life. Rinty was one week old when he was rescued by US Army Corporal Lee Duncan. Rinty was rescued along with his mother and 4 other pups. Duncan however kept Rin tin tin and a female pup whom he named Nannette (Good Luck symbol in French).

After the war ended Lee brought the couple along with him to New York. He considered both pups smarter and decided to land a role for them in a film no matter how small it is.

Rin Tin Tin soon got his first starring role in the 1922 silent film The Man from Hell's River. It was easy to work with Rin tin tin so he became a common choice animal for any director during that era.

Rin tin tin then starred in the film Where the North Begins, the film which become a savior for Warner Bros. when they went almost bankrupt.

At the age of 14, Rin Tin Tin died in 1932 but till then he already had made a big name for himself. The dog was so popular that for the next 2 decades directors hired German shepherd dogs and named them Rin Tin Tin II, III, and so on. Most of them were sons of Rin Tin Tin.

# 10. Turner and Hooch - The Oddest Couple Ever Unleashed!

# 9. Beethoven - The head of the family is the one with the tail.

Dog Breed:- St. Bernard
Accept it or not John Hughes was one of the best storytellers of Hollywood. Usually, his films focused on the events that occurred in one single day or night. He scripted many hit movies of the 80s and 90s. When I learned that Beethoven too was scripted by him then I was prompted to watch the film. I am glad I watched Beethoven. Yes, The name of the dog is inspired by the famous Musician, Ludwig Van Beethoven. The film follows a St. Bernard Dog who is stolen from a pet store. However, the dog is later adopted by a family. Soon the dog becomes the center of attraction and changes the lives of people around him. The film was successful enough that it inspired the studio to produce 5 sequels. Even an animated cartoon series was also made.
There were a total of 7 films in the Beethoven series and an animated TV series. Here is a brief up summary of all movies:
BEETHOVEN: The original film where a family adopts a Saint Bernard breed dog.
BEETHOVEN's 2nd: Focuses on the puppies littered by the dog and the family's efforts to save them from being killed
BEETHOVEN's 3rd: A very good cross country film with Beethoven on a recreational vehicle.
BEETHOVEN's 4th: The dog finds his look-alike friend and trades places.
BEETHOVEN's 5th: The dog meets the crazy uncle of the family
BEETHOVEN's Big Break: This film focused on a new storyline where a saint Bernard dog gets a chance to star in a film and then become a celebrity overnight.
BEETHOVEN's Christmas Adventure: A funny film where the now turned movie star Beethoven meets Santa and a little child named Mason.

# 8. The Ugly Dachshund - A HAPPY HONEYMOON GOES TO THE DOGS!...When a Great Dane disguised as a Dachsie crashes the party!

Dog Breed:- Great Dane and Dachshunds

The Ugly Dachshund proves the old proverb 'You become what you see'. The film is about a Great Dane Puppy who grows up with 4 Dachshund puppies and starts believing that he too is a dachshund. You can sit down and watch this classic Disney film with your family and pets and there won't be a single moment in the film when you're not enjoying it. This is one of the favorite movies of my nephews. The Ugly Dachshund is based on a 1938 novel by Gladys Bronwyn Stern. I am a fan of Disney’s movies and there is no doubt that Disney produced some of the classic Kids movies. I liked Brutus in the film (the great dane). He reminded me of Scooby-Doo. I wasn’t sure until that Scooby doo was a Great Dane.

# 7. Homeward Bound - "You've learned all you need to know, Chance. Now all you need to learn is how to say goodbye. "

Dog Breed: Golden Retriever, Bull Dog

Scroll to Continue

The Timeless Novel (The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford in 1961) on which the film is based, was previously adapted too by Walt Disney studios in 1963. However, I think that the 1993 remake was much better than the original. It may be due to Michael J. Fox. The film is a tribute to the lovely pets you own, Whether cats or dogs. A Golden retriever (Shadow), a bulldog (Chance), and a cat (Sassy) give the perfect example of friendship as they are lost and have to survive on their own. If you're a fan of animal movies like me then I bet you'll never forget this beautiful movie. A sequel was released too. However, I will stick with the original only.

The sequel Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco focused on the trio of pets again. This time the family forgets them at San Francisco Airport and goes to Canada on a Vacation. Now Shadow, Chance, and Sassy have to find their way home without getting lost in the big city.

# 6. Benji - So many dogs. So little time.

Dog Breed: Stray Dog
Benji has independently produced a family film (as no company was interested in a film about the stray dog). However, upon its release, Benji become a classic of its type and saw minor success which encouraged the producer to come up with 5 more sequels. Also "Benji" has a top-selling theme song "I Feel Love (Benji theme)" which won the Golden Globe award and was nominated for best original song in Oscars. Benji (played by a pooch named Higgins) becomes as adorable as Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. I haven't seen all the sequels but I think the original could not be duplicated.
Benji film series had 6 films. In the original film, Higgins played the title role while in the next 4 films the role was played by his daughter named Benjamin. The last film in the series saw Fluffy the dog playing the role of Benji. Here is a brief synopsis of all 6 films:
Benji 1974): The original film focused on a stray dog who helps two children two escape after being kidnapped.
For the Love of Benji (1977): This part focuses on Benji being lost in Athens. Not only does he has to find his way back home but also has to protect himself from two secret agents and a Doberman pinscher who are hunting him down to get the secret formula glued on his paws.
Benji's Very Own Christmas Story (1978): The film follows the stars of the original Benji film on a Christmas tour. Santa Claus joins the cast and all learn the true meaning of Christmas and celebrate it.
Oh! Heavenly Dog (1980): A private investigator is killed after finding out the truth of a murder case. He is sent back to earth as a Dog with only one purpose to solve the case and get the culprits punished.
Benji The Hunted (1987): The film follows Benji getting lost in the wilderness. Not only does he has to save himself from wild animals but also has to find a way home very fast. The film become a part of a controversy after famous film critic Roger Ebert gave it 4 out of 4 stars and didn't praise Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket released at the same time.
Benji Off the Leash (2004): Benji with the help of two pet savers tries to escape with his mother from a very cruel owner and his greedy son.

# 5. White Fang

Dog Breed: Wolf Dog

White fang is based on the best-selling classic novel of the same name by Jack London, which stars Ethan Hawke and "Jed the wolf-dog"(a celebrity dog who starred in The Thing and The Journey of Natty Gann). It was almost impossible to picture the exact story of the novel as the novel was more focused on the wolf. However, Randal's vision of the novel (which is more Jack-oriented) is much appreciable. Young Ethan Hawke impresses on screen as he tries to find gold in Alaska and befriends a white wolf-dog. Another thing that will catch your attention is the beautiful scenery of late 19th century Alaska.

# 4. Eight Below - The Most Amazing Story Of Survival, Friendship, And Adventure Ever Told.

Dog Breed: Siberian Husky, Malamute

It was the canine actors (six Siberian huskies and two malamutes) that stole the show in Eight Below despite being the presence of Dashing Paul walker. You may have seen many survival movies but Eight below is different where among all odds, life wins over death. The movie is a fictional adaption of the hit Japanese film "Nankyoku Monogatari". Nankyoku Monogatari itself was based on real-life incidents that occurred to an expedition team in Antarctica in 1958. In that event, 15 Sakhalin Husky sled dogs were left by the team on base camp. When the team returned after 1 year they were surprised to see that 2 dogs were still alive.

# 3. Old Yeller - A motion picture to remember with glowing pleasure!

Dog Breed: Stray Dog

If you are looking for a tearjerker dog movie then I will recommend Old yeller. And I am not the only one who will recommend you for this movie. Just ask any dog lover about the best dog movie and 90% of them will come out with 'Old Yeller'. Old yeller is a heart-touching story about a boy and a stray dog who develops friendship during the 1860s in texas. The film was produced by Disney studios and was based on an award-winning novel of the same name by Fred Gipson. Love, friendship, emotions, and feelings for your pet go far beyond in this ultimate classic film.

# 2. Lassie Come Home - The pulse-pounding adventure of an unusual collie who fought her way home . . . through a thousand miles of danger !

Dog Breed: Coolie

Though Lassie comes home is one of the oldest dog films on the list but it doesn't mean that it can not attract a modern audience. The film is about lassie (played by a male dog named Pal) and her young owner Joe. Lassie is sold by the father to an unknown man who lives more than 100 miles away. The movie centers on the home returning journey of rough coolie Lassie.

The plot is a tearjerker and people with soft hearts may even cry while watching the movie. The film can touch the heart of every person even of those who don't like pets (especially dogs). I was impressed by the acting of Pal the canine actor. Truly a true family film. This dog movie also stars young Elizabeth Taylor. The film saw 6 sequels. Even now the film is adapted in TV shows and books.

# 1. Marley & Me - Their relationship wasn't going anywhere until one little thing tied it all together.

Dog Breed: Labrador
Marley and I are based on an autobiography of the same name by John Grogan. The autobiography tells the tale of Marley, a yellow Labrador Retriever dog that was adopted by the author. Although the dog was "untrained" and neurotic, the author and his family found him intelligent and learned a lot from him. The film doesn't alter the story or novel and represents it as it is.
John Grogan (Owen Wilson) and his wife Jennifer Grogan(Jennifer Aniston) adopt a yellow Labrador. Initially, the dog creates a nuisance for the family but later on, the dog matures with time. Marley (dog) spends 13 years with the family and helps in repairing the broken relationships in the family.22 different yellow labradors were used to play Marley at a different stage of life.

anonymous on March 10, 2013:

Not on your list. Where the Red Fern Grows, Lad: A Dog, or Balto. Balto is actually loosely based on a true incident. He was actually the final lead dog in the relay and so got all the glory. There is a statue of him in Central Park.

anonymous on February 18, 2013:

Definitely Hachi ! Love Hachi ! The most emotional dog movie ever !!! Even based on a true story !!!

anonymous on February 11, 2013:

I am shocked the El Perro came in at the bottom of the list! Also surprised that Balto is not mentioned or the very intense and moving story about a dog who overcomes horrible circumstances to find a home called Amores Perros, I know that none of these movies are "kid" or "Disney" movies but the list didn't say that was the criteria...

In the history of movies, dog movies have been pretty popular. Just think about Lassie, or Cats and Dogs as well as Marmaduke? These films were inspired by our beloved and loyal pet dogs. This is because dogs are very much entertaining in every way. Dogs are also closely linked with humans and they have strong bond and ties with each other.
