An Introduction To The Disney Vault

Ever wondered about the Disney Vault? Wondered what it is, how it works or even if it really exists? Well it does exist and yet it doesn't. The Vault is actually a term that really refers to a process although there is, of course, a place where the original films are stored. I'm pretty sure that it will not look like the vault pictured here.

On this page, learn more about Disney's Vault, will learn which Disney movies are coming out of the Vault in 2014 and learn a bit about the future of the Vault.

What Is Disney's Vault?

How does The Vault work?

There is a place where Disney stores the extremely valuable original copies of their movies. Howeer, the Vault is really a term that Disney uses when it takes a movie out of production. When Disney places a movie "in the Vault," it generally allows ten years to pass and then re-releases the movie. This practice means that it can be hard to find some movies that are currently in the Vault.

Why Does Disney Place Movies In A Vault?

Disney places movies in the Vault to generate excitement about them. Perhaps to make them "new" again. In terms of advertising, the Vault is a marketing promotion that has worked very well for Disney. By removing a movie from production, they create a demand for it when it is re-released.

What Does The Vault Mean Today?

Is the Disney Vault still relevant?

Once upon a time, when a movie was in the Vault it would become very expensive in the marketplace and people would pay up to $100 for copies of those movies. However, if you want to purchase a film that is in the Vault today, you can simply go to Amazon (pr eBay) where they have the movies still in stock or where private sellers with their own supplies are happy to sell you the movie. The price will be higher than a movie that is currently available at the stores directly from Disney but the movie is still available. If you want to show your child an animated classic that is not currently available before he outgrows it, it is not such a big deal any more as you can still find a way to buy it.

With the advent of so many great children's films and the digital age, the Vault system could become less effective. For the time being, it still seems to generate excitement. The fact that many people choose to stream movies might also change the way Disney releases its films. Will we be buying DVDs or blu-ray discs in the future? I think there will come a time when we do not.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid was released on October 1, 2013.

Disney first released The Little Mermaid movie on November 14, 1989 and it is still as popular with little girls as it was when it was first released. I probably don't need to say that the story is from that of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name. The Little Mermaid was Disney's 28th classic film and did well both sales wise and review wise, finding a place in our hearts forever.

Disney's The Little Mermaid was released with much excitement from Disney's Vault on October 1, 2013. It was released in four choices of format. Shown to the right is The Little Mermaid Three-Disc Diamond Edition that includes blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, digital copy and music. If that is more than you require, you will find all of the options available, ranging from the DVD to the blu-ray, on Amazon by clicking on the picture.

Aladdin Was Released From the Vault in 2013

ALADDIN is available on blu-ray disc as an import. Amazon says that the blu-ray disc is region-free so you don't need to worry about region if you are buying the blu-ray disc.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan was released on February 5, 2013.

It was exciting! Peter Pan was released from The Vault on February 05, 2013. The artwork, in my opinion is amazing and evocative of the time that Peter Pan was set in.

There are THREE versions available:

A two-disc Diamond Edition blu-ray DVD combination in DVD packaging.

A two-disc Diamond Edition blu-ray DVD combination in blu-ray packaging.

A three-disc Diamond Edition, which includes a blu-ray and DVD copy of the movie, a digital copy and a storybook app.

Once again, all of those options are available from Amazon by clicking on the image of the movie shown here.

Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp was released on February 7, 2012.

Disney re-released Lady and the Tramp on blu-ray disc and DVD on February 7, 2012. As always, there are a few format options available so you can choose the one that best suits the needs of your family.

Pocahontas was released on August 21, 2012.

POCAHONTAS was re-released by Disney on August 21, 2012. It included two movies -- the original Pocahontas movie and the second one, Pocahontas II.

Cinderella was released on October 2, 2012.

Cinderella was re-released on DVD and blu-ray disc on October 2, 2012. Don't you LOVE the cover artwork?

When Did Dumbo Come Out Of The Vault?

Dumbo was released on September 20, 2011.

The timeless classic Dumbo was released from the Vault on high definition blu-ray disc and on DVD in a 70th Anniversary edition on September 20, 2011. says, Dumbo's "video transfer is magnificent, its DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround track and 320kbps original mono mix are notable additions to an already impressive disc, and its supplemental package boasts a picture-in-picture Cine-Explore experience and other must-see extras."

Perhaps not Disney's BEST blu-ray release but pretty close. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and it looks pretty good to me.

When Will The Lion King Come Out Of The Vault?

The Lion King was released on October 4, 2011.

Disney released The Lion King on blu-ray disc for the first time ever on October 4, 2011. At the same time, they released it on 3D for the first time ever. The 3D version was available in movie theatres for a short, two-week run starting on September 16, 2011, after which it became available for your home theatre.

Wikipedia quotes some very interesting figures about Disney's much-loved The Lion King movie, including the facts that it is the sixth highest grossing animated movie and the highest grossing hand-drawn animated movie ever. Bonus is the fact that it also received positive reviews from the movie critics who loved both the music and the story. When it was released in 1994, The Lion King was the most successful movie. Currently, it is the 32nd highest-grossing feature film ever. All of these facts combined to make the release of The Lion King from Disney's Vault an extremely anticipated date. The result? Stunning.

Bambi was released from The Vault on March 1, 2011. Making it available on DVD AND on blu-ray disc for the first time. You can order your copy right now from Amazon where it is on sale and where it qualifies for FREE shipping, if your order is worth $35 or more.

Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland was released from The Vault on Feburary 1, 2011 in high definition DVD and on blu-ray disc for the first time ever.

More Movies That Came Out of the Vault in 2011

Additional movies that Disney released on blu-ray disc and DVD in 2011 included Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast.

It is noteworthy that Snow White and Fantasia were returned to the vault in April, 2011.

All Disney movies, regardless of their status with Disney, continue to be available through Amazon. To see ALL of Disney's movies on Amazon, you can simply click here.

Have you been wondering about the Vault where Disney 'puts' its movies?

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on May 07, 2015:

It was one of my first. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are amongst the others. I'm not sure which I saw first.

Sheilamarie from British Columbia on May 01, 2015:

The very first movie I ever saw was Cinderella. It must have been out for a while because I wasn't even born yet in 1950.

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on November 09, 2014:

Wednesday-Elf, you were lucky. Sometimes the timing of the releases has been less than perfect for children.

Wednesday-Elf from Savannah, Georgia on November 01, 2014:

I didn't know about the Disney vault, but I remember being aware the Bambi had been re-released the year my son was 5 and I thought how great that a favorite movie from my childhood was now available for my little boy to see. I guess I thought the Disney movies were just brought back for each generation of kids. Interesting!

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on February 24, 2014:

@Mommie-Moola: Mary Poppins is one of the movies I remember as a child. It is great that Disney has cleaned up the film and re-released it.

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on February 03, 2014:

@RoadMonkey: People used to be disappointed when they could not buy their favorite movie at the right time for their children. You are right, that's not a problem anymore.

Treasures By Brenda (author) from Canada on February 03, 2014:

@Scotties-Rock: We agree!

RoadMonkey on January 18, 2014:

Yes and I believe 10 years is too long a time to put a film back in there. If you want to take a child to the cinema to see a classic movie, it is possible for your child to just miss out on some of the classics, too young to see them when they are put away and too old when they are released again. It doesn't matter so much these days, of course, as you say, because you can still get most of them on DVD but they can get VERY expensive after a few years, because the supply is diminishing.

jonathan-kosgei-90 on January 17, 2014:

never ever thought such a thing existed

That does seem like a mystery to me. I am excited to see Aladdin come out of the vault since that was always one of my favorites. I remember being Jasmine in a parade at my school when I was in kindergarten. And I also remember going to Disney and seeing Jafar at the end of the parade acting as a janitor. It was pretty entertaining! Good memories :)

The Disney vault has always been a mystery to me.

topbuilderlist on May 03, 2013:

First time I heard Disney Vault. Are all movies have their own vault as well?

anonymous on April 29, 2013:

Seeing all these movies in the vault remind me of my children's childhood, and it seriously impacts me, because I can't share these movies with them now because they're in their mid 50's. this just makes me want more kids. But my wife is dead, so. Maybe I will adopt. But overall, I love these Disney classics. And reminding me of my younger years. Dang-goly. Do I feel old. But I'm only in my mid 60's. or am I? LOL all you commenters will be wondering. But yeah. This vault reminds me of my teen years with 5 kids. But now they're in their mid 59's. Gol-dang.

anonymous on April 27, 2013:

criysto lm on April 08, 2013:

Great lens! Disney always has people wondering.

TanoCalvenoa on April 04, 2013:

Good information, but I can't stand the "vault" system. I wanted to buy my young daughters Jungle Book a few years ago and it was $40 and up everywhere. So I just didn't buy it, and part of their childhood was spent watching other movies. They could've been Jungle Book fans, but it wasn't available/affordable. Instead they're fans of different movies that we were able to obtain. Kids aren't going to be all that interested or excited about these movies for long - some may only like these animated films during a certain age range. If during that age range a movie is unavailable, they just plain won't ever have the opportunity to be excited about it. Later when it's finally released they may not care anymore.

anonymous on April 03, 2013:

We grabbed Cinderella when it was re-released earlier this year. Disney sure knows how to get us all excited - great marketing!

senterprises on January 24, 2013:

The 'vault' is a very savvy marketing tool used by Disney. Whenever one of these movies is released from the 'vault' it usually has all types of extra features or will be re-mastered and people will buy the latest and greatest version even if they already have the VHS and/or DVD versions already. There are several movies I am looking forward to seeing released from the 'vault'.
