Black Widow Has Wide Appeal: A Movie Review

I'm no expert movie critic. And certainly no Marvel superfan. I'm just an average middle-aged female who watches the occasional movie. But after I saw the recently released and much anticipated film Black Widow (of the MCU franchise) I had to give my two cents worth. I'll try not to give any spoilers by getting into the details.

If you haven't watched any of the other Marvel movies or are familiar with the Avengers characters, you will still be able to understand and appreciate this movie. I think anyone in the audience should be able to follow the storyline from the way the show was put together.

In fact, the popular movie/TV review website Rotten Tomatoes says: "... it remains a solidly entertaining standalone adventure ..."

Black Widow (2021) is the backstory of the Avenger character Natasha Romanoff.

If you are following the Avenger movies in proper chronological story order, this is set immediately after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016). And the movie that follows Black Widow is Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

From a non superhero fan point of view, to my surprise, I see it as a story about a dysfunctional family. In fact Natasha Romanoff’s family is at the forefront of the story. It's not just about fighting the bad guy, but people trying to work out awkward family dynamics.

If you're at the cinema because you went along with a comic book superfan. Or catching it through video on-demand at home with the rest of your family, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Yes, it should appeal to Moms of all ages and backgrounds too.

Now if you're a fan of girl power movies, it should definitely appeal to you. The girl power theme is becoming increasingly popular. DC gave us Wonder Woman. Captain Marvel (2019) was a huge financial success. X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019), however, did not become a blockbuster as hoped. Marvel upped the ante this time with a focus on human drama we can relate to. I would say the human complexities gave the characters much more depth than expected from a superhero movie but that’s just my opinion.

I also think the casting for the nuclear family was perfect. Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, older sister to Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, the father. Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, the mother. A "stellar supporting cast" is how Rotten Tomatoes puts it.

You will probably read mixed reactions from the expert critics. But reviews won’t harm its popularity. As of July 15, 2021 the movie has earned $200 million in worldwide box office sales.

So if you’ve been eagerly looking forward to a movie-theater experience, Black Widow will not disappoint.

I will end with these movie trailers. Prepare to be dazzled.
